NaNoMangO (original) (raw)

01 November 2024 @ 12:05 am

While a tragedy befell the once beloved NaNoWriMo--there is nothing stopping NaNoManGo from carving its own way. What it needs, however, is word of mouth and community.

I've built this BlueSky feed. All you'd have to do to have your posts seen is to include NaNoManGo somewhere in your posts.

I also have this Tumblr account that I've flipped for the sake of NaNoManGo where I will try (try, try!) to re-blog everyone who participates in NaNoManGo. I won't do this until December though.

If you have any community resources for other socials please post them here (like a NaNoManGo discord?)

Henlo. It's been a while.

Just seeing if anyone wants to MangO with me this coming June. :V

I restarted my comic on Webtoon Canvas last October, and was wondering during November how I could apply the idea to the vertically scrolling style, as opposed to the Western, page style we mostly have seen around these parts.

So I looked back at my last comic attempt, where I wound up with a nearly 2 year sketch buffer thanks to MangO and some personal challenges along the same lines, and realized I tended to do some 5-8 panels per page. So, I'm aiming to do 5-8 sketched panels per day. :D Or some combination of that, and in the end have between 150 to 240 panels to work with. Webtoon kind of encourages longer episodes, with 30+ panels per episode being the length they're looking for for their current contest, but at this point, anything to get my posting frequency shortened is a good thing. I've been struggling coming back from an injury induced hiatus.

So, yeah! Same story, new (updated) version and name. Even if I'm just shouting to the wind, gotta do something. :3 Join me! (Or just watch me pull my hair out, either way, it'll be a good time.)

As promised guys, here is the famed

Headcount Post!

For the newcomers, you just have to leave a comment to say you participate, so we know who's here and ready to rumble!
So who'se going to do the Challenge?!!

01 November 2016 @ 10:28 pm

(Yes this is totally a verb now.)
First of all:

Welcome! Or welcome back!

For the news one here or the curious who haven't decided to join us, a quick explanation.
nanomango is a community devoted to a monthly challenge I can only describe as: Like the nanowrimo, but with art.
Yes, this is insane, but very very rewarding.
More precisely, the NaNoManGo is about comics. We have 30 days to make 30 pages. (As I said, insane)

But, contrary to the name (mango stand for manga originally) you are not limited by any label of comics. If it had words and pictures, you are good to go. you can make american styled comics, franco belgian comic strip, four panel, manga, illustrated books, as I said, you only need words AND arts. And we are not going to be more picky than that.

I don't think I can do 30 pages of finished comics!
You don't have to! You can do 50 thumbnails sketch, 30 sketched pages, 10 inked pages, 5 colored pages... or another aim! Jusy give yourseve an objective, something that's going to be daring, unusual and which is going to stretch your abilities, but not too hard and discouraging!

I can't post everyday!
Again ,you don't have to. It does give a sense of rythm, but you can also post only on the weekend, or even at the end of the challenge!

That's all? No!
There is still rules. Sorry about that.
The first, only and most important rule is: if you are making a mature comics, as in nudity, sex, violence, swearing, anything that could shock someone, we only ask you to put NSFW (which doens't mean Not Suitable For Wombat) in the subject of your posts AND to add an LJ-cut to hide the pages.

Okay, you want to participate?
Good!
The first thing is to say hi in the headcount post coming soon! Say hi and tell us about your project! We do not bite and try to be helpful and kind (our enthousiasm can be a bit staggering but we're nice)

How can I post in the community?
As long as you joined the community, you can post whenever you want. We have a few habits to keep thing clean and tidy around here, beside the NSFW part.
fortunatly, we had some awesome moderators here these pasts years, and it's easiest for me to linked their old tutorial so we have:

To embed a picture, just use the code: in the HTML tab.
You can use LJ's scrapbook if you don't feel at ease with FTP or don't have a personal site.
wulfaehas done a good tutorial about resizing pictures and hosting them on photobucket
foxinthestarsdid the same with GIMP and Flickr
And Com!Dad, alias [Bad username: adifferentdrumexplained] the process of posting with Semajic
Also, sweet_gardenia, the other actual moderator is often posting tutorials and tips about comics in the Ressources and Tutorials tags (she is awesome, thanks Sweetie!)

Do I have to post in the LJ community? I don't have a LJ / Don't want one/ lost my login / didn't know it still exist/etc

You don't have to post here! It's nice to have everything in the same place, but the community also exist on Tumblr, under the name MangoGroove! The mod, Amongthegentlymad is also our sweet_gardenia and will help you there!

Woops, I think I broke something
If it's your post and you don't know how to fix it, don't worry. The mods, sweet_gardenia and kineko (me) are here to help, just shoot us a message and we will try to answer quickly.
If you broke a bone, put ice on it and go as quick as you can to the hospital.

Okay, are you reaaaaaady?
Then let's go!

Well, I only made it five pages in to my ten-page goal, but still... that's five more pages than I probably would have done without mango, so it's still a win in my book. Between a major bout of depression in the first half of the month and personal circumstances taking me out of commission for nearly all of last week, five pages is still pretty good.

( Last Mango Page of this round!Collapse )
There's probably only one more page before this scene ends, two if I really stretch it. Then I can finally move out of this generic leafy forest... and into some other generic type of forest oops lol

As for the future of BA? July and possibly August are going to be super busy for me on an art front, but I've definitely got my drive to keep at it up, even if it is only for me. Hell, that's also a win in my book since it's been forever since I didn't necessarily care if lots of people like what I create, haha.

Current Music: Russel Brower - Legends (World of Warcraft)

Even though none of the rest of you are posting any, I believe in you! There's... eight days left if you include today (which only just started so probably should) and even if you don't get to your goal, tbh that's totally fine and even if you just tried that's definitely worth celebrating imo.

Anyway, BA.

( 115 plus a 116 WIPCollapse )

Mango goal: 4/10+ :\

Current Mood: depresseddepressed

Current Music: Lois McMaster Bujold - The Vor Game, part 2 (Audiobook)

I said I was gonna post whatever I had every week and even though I'm now two days late in doing so I'm gonna try to stick to that. It, uh... wasn't a super productive week for a variety of reasons but I did get at least one page done, if the second page is... uh... not especially, lol :x

( Bowspirit's Aim page 114 and a bit of 115Collapse )

Mango goal: 3/10+ :x

Current Mood: blahblah

Current Music: Sting - Desert Rose (Brand New Day)

OH HI HOW YOU BE I'M GREAT JUST FINISHED KILLING AND FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTERING MY COMPUTER BACK TOGETHER hahahahhhhhhhhahh ;___;

I was going to post my pages in weekly batches and while technically the first week hasn't ended yet (since June 1st was a Wednesday and Tuesday mostly only just started), but due to aforementioned computer shenanigans (which took up all but about two hours of my last two waking days) I seriously doubt my ability to get another page done. I dunno, we'll see though.

ALSO HI LJ LONG TIME NO SEE :B

Name? xella! Also known as Crazy Shirt Lady on the Tumbls and just plain Xellandria on the Twits. Mostly just Xella, though :P
First Time doing NaNoManGo? Noooo, I actually was a participant (and finalist) in the... second? Mango, in June of '04. I've participated in several since, but have only completed the challenge... twice, I think (June '04 and June '11).

How would you describe your style? Anime-influenced? _Slayers_-influenced, specifically? Not as much in some of my other stuff (though it's obviously still there), but my comic started in like, 2001 (and was having the characters drawn earlier than that) so it's still got a very strong 90s anime feel to it, I think.

What’s Your NaNoManGo Flavor? I'm still not entirely sure, but I'm thinking probably something between Mango a la Mode and Mango with the Works—I know "colored" pages is flexible but I am a pedant and I do work in black-and-white, haha. 10-15+ fully-finished pages, anyway!

Show Us A Bit of Art? Uh, well... these are the two characters most likely to be the ONLY two characters in the next dozen pages or so. On the left is Karra, and on the right is Sevvie. Perspective is hard and this sketch has been in progress for forever lol :<

( The story thus far, and pages also!Collapse )

Mango Goal: 2/10+!

Current Music: OA - Carry the Moment (Phoenix Wright)

Art not available due to the lamentable crash of my old laptop six months hence and because I've not uploaded any of the art to my new lappie.

Good luck everyone!

First Time doing NaNoManGo? Oh hells no I've been at this thing forever. I'm not quite the old guard but pretty darn close

How would you describe your style? Still kinda trying to figure it out but right off hand I'd say a weird mashup of Mucha, Don Bluth, late 80's/early 90's Saturday Morning cartoons with just a pinch of manga

What’s Your NaNoManGo Flavor? (Not sure what this means? Click here for a handy dandy explanation of all the various monthly challenges) I think I'm gonna shoot for Mango Dim Sum this year since it's been a pretty busy month

Show Us A Bit of Art? (can be your main characters, background, concept, whatever you feel like drawing)
