Improv Comedy is my Most Prized Possession – National Comedy Theatre (original) (raw)

Improv comedy show castThere’s an old story that gets trotted out at every George family function about “Anna singing in her beautiful voice.” Picture this: I’m two years old, at church, belting out hymns with the confidence of a diva but the lyrical accuracy of a toddler. I turned to my mom and declared, “I am singing in my beautiful voice, mom.” I know, not revolutionary, but for some reason, my parents thought, “Let’s get this kid to the stage!” Fast forward two years, and at the ripe age of four, I made my theatrical debut as “Dancing Corn” in the community theatre’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. And thus began my performing career.

After graduating college with a degree in broadcast journalism and a minor in theatre arts, I started working in marketing… not exactly what you’d expect, right? Trust me, I was just as surprised. My first year in corporate America had me longing for my inner theatre kid. Enter the National Comedy Theatre. I started taking classes with the ultimate goal of joining the coveted MainStage cast. It was love at first improv.

I quickly learned to take life a little less seriously and to find humor in every bizarre, unexpected sentence that came out of my mouth. People don’t tell you that life after college can be a real slog! Laughing with strangers is the best kind of therapy. Improv allows me to be that carefree four-year-old again, doing what I love most. Showing up to a theater every week to perform and be silly is my proudest accomplishment.
