Leroy Jethro Gibbs (original) (raw)
Leroy Jethro Gibbs is a former NIS/NCIS Special Agent in Charge of the NCIS Major Case Response Team which operates out of the Navy Yard in Washington D.C. Sometime in the early 1990's, he created The Leroy Jethro Gibbs Scholarship Fund.
He held SAC position up until March 2021 when he was suspended with his second-in-command, NCIS Special Agent Timothy McGee succeeding him as the agent in charge of the MCRT. In June 2021, Gibbs resigned from the team and NCIS for good, opting to remain in Alaska instead of returning to Washington D.C. FBI Special Agent-Turned-NCIS Special Agent Alden Parker succeeded him as the new leader of the NCIS Major Case Response Team. Currently, Gibbs is now retired and resides in Alaska.
He is a former Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, the son of Jackson and Ann Gibbs, the widower of Shannon Gibbs, father of Kelly Gibbs. He is also the ex-husband of Diane Sterling, Rebecca Chase and Stephanie Flynn, the godfather of Amira Shakarji, the son-in-law of Joann and Mac Fielding and the ex-brother-in-law of Shelly Flynn. He has been married four times and divorced three.
Pre-Series
Born in the small town of Stillwater, Pennsylvania on November 21, 1954, Gibbs was the only child of US Army Air Force veteran Jackson Gibbs and civilian housewife Ann Gibbs with Gibbs receiving his first two names in honor of Leroy Jethro Moore, Jackson's best friend and business partner. In "The Namesake", it is revealed that LJ, a World War II veteran and Montford Point Marine, had influenced the teenaged Gibbs to join the Marines. Gibbs is known by his first name, Leroy, to family and people in his hometown (as well as his ex-wife Diane), whereas at work he is known as Gibbs, Jethro, or simply "Boss". Shannon called him both Gibbs and Jethro.
In Semper Fidelis Gibbs mentions that his grandfather had a still and that it blew up once. In My Other Left Foot, Gibbs states that he had an aunt who died at age seven.
When Gibbs was about 9 years old, his father helped him build his very first boat, named "Chickadee" after a nickname his father Jackson called his mother Ann. Her quote about building boats was "A boat named after a person will live forever." That's when he got his love of building boats and other things by hand with hand tools.
Gibbs had a very quiet upbringing but suffered a tragedy at the age of 14 when his mother died of cancer. It was revealed that she had actually committed suicide so that her husband and son would not have to watch her suffer, leaving Jackson a widower and also forcing him to raise young Gibbs all by himself. Jackson blamed Moore for her death as she had confided in him about what she was going to do and he had not stopped her, with this secret breaking apart their friendship and neither Gibbs nor his father seeing Moore again for many years.
As teenager, Gibbs often provoked violence with defiance to his father, who constantly comes to his unwanted aid with a Winchester rifle. He faced confrontations with Chuck Winslow and Ed Gantry and was also known around the area as a delinquent, as said by the new sheriff, one of the other delinquents during his teenage years, stating, "Funny, never expected to find you on the same side of the law."
He became captivated by local girl Shannon Fielding, who he first saw Shannon in a window at the local clothing store “Ellen’s Dress Shop”, where she was dressing a mannequin in the window and he would properly meet her for the first time at a train station before being deployed. At the train station, Shannon asked why Leroy was fighting with Chuck and Ed and he said it over something stupid. She said, "You should probably stop that." She then asked Leroy for his name and he told her "Leroy Jethro Gibbs." She looked at him with a smile and said, "I'm just gonna call you Gibbs." It is later revealed that Shannon inspired Gibbs to create his rules as she was creating her own set of rules to live by.
After graduating from high school, rather than going to college Gibbs chose to join the United States Marine Corps instead. Gibbs left Stillwater in 1972 and had little contact with the place for the next thirty years. Gibbs shipped to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island for recruit training, gaining the serial number 817657329 in which he added a G after to close friends. There he befriended fellow Marine Private First Class Joan Matteson, but she was one of several marines killed in a helicopter crash on April 3 1973, after she was deployed to Okinawa, Japan.
Gibbs's early years in the Marine Corps were with the Military Police in Camp Lejeune. He rose to a Non-Commissioned Officer rank. Later, in 1980 as a Sergeant, he accepted to Scout Sniper School in Camp Pendleton.
In 1980, he briefly broke up with Shannon out of fear losing her because of his marine status. While going to a wedding, he was abducted by Vito Zucado and had met Ducky after the latter accidentally saved him by crashing into Vito's car. After giving his story to NCIS, he and Ducky were abducted by Vito's cousin Jonny Zucado who beat Gibbs until he knocked out a tooth. Thanks to Ducky, they were spared. Taking advice from Ducky, Gibbs reconciled with Shannon and they married in December of 1981 and had a baby girl sometime in 1982 whom they would name Kelly Gibbs.
Later Gibbs became a Scout Sniper and saw several overseas deployments. He rosed from Sergent to Gunnery Sargent rank. As a Marine, Gibbs befriended Bushnell, future Senator Patrick Kiley, Charles T. Ellison and Kevin Maloney, people he would once encounter during his time as an NCIS/NCIS agent.
During 1989-1991, Gibbs was served on tours of duty in Panama]] (Operation Just Cause)[1] and in the Persian Gulf (Operation Desert Storm) with the 1st Battalion 1st Marines[2]. His Commanding Officer during Desert Storm was Lieutenant Colonel William Ryan. Gibbs' Lieutenant, David Cameron, died in Gibbs's arms during a battle after trying to save Gibbs' life.
In February 1991, Shannon witnessed the murder of a marine by Mexican drug cartel leader Pedro Hernandez and agreed to testify against him, with her and their daughter Kelly being placed under the protection of a NIS Special Agent Kurt Mitchell. However, Mitchell was shot in the head by Hernandez while he was driving them and died instantly, both Shannon and Kelly died when the van crashed into a wall.
During his deployment in Desert Storm, Gibbs received the news that both Shannon and Kelly had been murdered. Being understandably grief-stricken and devastated, he was wounded during an engagement and was left comatose for nineteen days. As he had been wounded in combat with an enemy force, Gibbs was then awarded the Purple Heart medal.
Gibbs was an in-patient at Bethesda up until June of 1991. During his recovery process, Gibbs visited the graves of his dead wife and daughter who were buried while he was in a coma. He also met NIS agent Michael Franks who was investigating the girls’ deaths.
In the season 6 episode "Deliverance", it is revealed that he was also deployed to Colombia on a classified mission to kill drug lord, when he meet Rosa Tomayo and they have affair. In An Eye for An Eye revealed he also served on duty in Bosnian war. Not long after that, he retired from the Marine Corps with the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.

As agent, Gibbs worked alongside Dwayne Cassius Pride, Dan McLane, Felix Betts and Michael Franks. The posse were dubbed the "Fed Five" and gained national recognition for their work on the Privileged Killer case.
Around this time he married and divorced his then wife Diane Sterling. It’s was revealed in "Mind Games", in which Ducky notes that Gibbs became so obsessed with catching serial killer Kyle Boone that it incited the collapse of their marriage, which happened no later than 1995, the year Gibbs captured Boone.
After Franks had retired from NIS/NCIS in 1996, Gibbs began serving as a training officer to NCIS Special Agent Stanley Burley.
Later, Gibbs served as an Agent Afloat on board an unnamed Navy ship in the Mediterranean. Upon his deployment ending, Gibbs returned home and found his then-wife, Rebecca Chase in bed with another man, Gene Isaacson. As such, Gibbs and Rebecca divorced, and she later married this man she cheated Gibbs on.
In 1999, NCIS Special Agent Riley McCallister sent Gibbs to Europe, the destination being Paris, France where Gibbs met NCIS agents William Decker and Jennifer Shepard, as well as Medical Examiner Donald Mallard. During their time in Paris, Gibbs and Jenny participated in a mission with Decker serving as their handler with the objective being to eliminate Russian arms dealer Anatoly Zhukov and his fiancée, Svetlana Chernitskaya. Gibbs managed to kill Zhukov but Jenny hesitated and let Svetlana escape. Gibbs and Shepard became partners and eventually lovers with the relationship soon ending after Jenny left Gibbs a "Dear John" letter.
He lived in Moscow, Russia, for about a year with his then wife Stephanie Flynn, when he was worked alongside G. Callen. Gibbs and Stephanie’s marriage only lasted 14 months. According to Gibbs, she was the one who left him. She is also been said in the Season 1 episode, "Hung Out to Dry", to get drunk and dial Gibbs incessantly on the day of their former wedding anniversary, which leads him to aggressively disable or even ruin his phones to shut her out.
In 2001, Burley became an Agent Afloat while Gibbs was assigned to the NCIS Headquarters located in the Navy Yard in Washington D.C.
In September 2001 Gibbs was engaged for a fifth time to a woman named Ellen Wallace. Originally, she was believed to have died in the 9/11 attacks, but she had been murdered the night before. Gibbs later revealed that he ended his relationship with Ellen two weeks before her death because he loved her and was trying to protect her.
In November 2001 Gibbs came to Baltimore on an undercover assignment, linking a Navy officer to a money laundering scheme and meet Detectives Tony Dinozzo and Danny Price . Since Gibbs is undercover, the Baltimore detectives take the lead. When they finally arrest the money launderer, DiNozzo uncovers evidence that Price is corrupt and has been working with the launderer. DiNozzo confronts Price in secret, but is unwilling to expose him. Equally unable to continue working with him, DiNozzo considers quitting the police force, but Gibbs, impressed by his abilities, invites him to join NCIS.
While there, Gibbs formed his own team originally composed of former Baltimore Police Department Detective Anthony DiNozzo, Forensics Specialist Abigail Sciuto and Ducky with former FBI agent Vivian Blackadder later joining the team a few months after the attack on the U.S.S. Cole that had killed her brother, Rex.

Personality
A man of few words, Gibbs is known for his glare which can have others, whether it be his fellow NCIS colleagues or criminals talking in seconds or shutting up immidiately. He is a gruff man who speaks his mind and has a dislike towards political red tape as well as politics and lawyers. He comes of as strict and as a person with no humor, but he is still a person everyone respects and looks up too. He hates waste of time and is a very impatient person. He cares deeply for other people, and find his work to be extremely important. Gibbs is not good at talking about emotions or showing feelings, but he does care for all of his team members and have a different dynamic with all of them. He is describes by DiNozzo to be a functional mute, as often his silence is a language in itself. He is very protective of the people he loves and will break the rules to protect them. He is extremely intelligent, often seeing solutions and cracking the case before anyone else does. He is also described as fearless.
He is also known for his head slaps who he got from Special Agent Michael Franks. As well as always finding out secrets and standing behind people when they talk about him.
His relationship with modern technology is vitriolic, to say at least. He smashed a smartphone McGee gave him and threw an iPhone that Phil gave him to a fireplace (he always prefers a flip phone, seemingly refusing to give it up), stomped a Roomba to pieces, is unfamiliar with websites and social media or how they work, and shot a computer. In some episodes, he also doesn't keep up with modern times, as revealed in one episode that he had no clue who the Kardashians are. He loves his coffee and have a serious addiction to caffein. His days are often ruined unless he gets his morning coffee.
Not long after Tony's and Abby's departure from the team, Gibbs began facing strong emotional situations from current and past events, getting closure to moments he kept hidden as far back as when he was a child. He began to open up a bit more to those around him and began expressing himself more once he started to overcome some of these events.
Physical Appearance
Gibbs is a tall man in his late fifties, early sixties with silver/white hair and blue eyes.
For work, he usually wears a causal suit that consists of either a polo shirt or a button up shirt, a blazer jacket (usually a solid color), pair of slacks, and dress shoes; for outside of work, mostly an old-school button-up shirt (mostly flannel/plaid) with a t-shirt under it or a hoodie USMC (United State Marine Corps) sweater, either denim jeans or cargo pants, and sneakers.
Abilities
As a former Marine, he has the ability to fire a sniper from over 1000 feet away and still hitting his target (As shown in flashback episodes when he killed former Drug Cartel Leader Pedro Hernandez). As a former NCIS Special Agent, Gibbs usually showed his ability of being able to catch the bad guy when they run by taking short cuts and being a few steps ahead of them. Therefore, they end up giving themselves up to him. He also carried his SIG and rarely missed his target. He has more unique range of abilities, many of which have made him a great asset to the NCIS Agency.
Hand to Hand Combat
During his time in the Marines, Gibbs presumably learnt how to fight and is an exceptionally skilled fighter, able to subdue opponents. This had helped him in the long run when chasing or fighting the bad guys.
Intelligence
He is extremely intelligent, often seeing solutions and cracking the case before anyone else does.
Knives
Gibbs always followed Rule number 9, "Never go anywhere without a knife." This skill with knives had helped in several occasions.
Firearms
Gibbs is impeccable when it comes to firearms. He is a former Marine and was trained in sniper training and can shoot his target over 1000 ft. away.
Medical Training
He had some medical training that he learned from the Marines. This came in handy when he helped Marine Lieutenant Emma Reynolds give birth in the back of the NCIS car at a garage in the Newborn King (episode).
Interrogation
He is a very skilled interrogator. His method of speaking to suspects was often described by Tony and McGee as suspects willingly confessing through tears than wanting to face Gibbs, Tony once mentioning to Penelope Langston that even Atila the Hun couldn't face Gibbs.
Relationships
Personal
Jackson Gibbs
In the Season 6 episode Heartland Gibbs' frosty relationship with his father Jackson and the backstory behind it is revealed. It is revealed they lost their close relationship when Gibbs' mother died, and Shannon was the one that got them closer again. After Shannon and Kellys death they were both devastated and had a fight at their funeral, which led them to not have any contact for over 15 years. His father had rarely been mentioned up to that point and Jackson had not known that Gibbs was a "boss" until Gibbs and his team visited Stillwater to investigate a case. By the end of the episode, they make amends and the two have become closer again after that. He makes a few appearances in the next season until he dies of a stroke. His father's death devastated him, as he was shocked to get word of his death.
It is shown in Jackson first appearance in the second half of Heartland (episode) that he had spent years fixing up a car Gibbs had brought home as junk to fix into his dream car. He has even put in a R/T suspension package like his son wanted and even the color Gibbs wanted. Gibbs thought his dad had gotten rid of the "junk" and was very surprised when it turned out he had instead fixed it. The car is a yellow 426 Hemi with a black stripe on the hood of the car. Gibbs smiles for what could be one of the longest times in a scene throughout the series when he first gets to drive it with his father. This gesture helps mend their relationship, and Gibbs is seen driving the car in later episodes.
Jackson Gibbs is mentioned and has a few appearances in later season aswell and their relationship has gotten closer again. His death really took a toll on Gibbs.
They are revealed to actually be very similar, have a strong physical likeness as well as a strong demeanor. They both love coffee and read the news paper in the morning.
Ann Gibbs
Ann Gibbs is the mother of Leroy Jethro Gibbs and the wife of Jackson Gibbs. In the episode of "Life Before His Eyes," you see Jethro's mother for the first time. This is where Gibbs gets the liking for red-headed women because his mother was a redhead and his wife Shannon and all his other ex-wives were redheaded as well. When Gibbs was 14, his mother committed suicide because she found out that she was terminally ill with cancer. It is revealed that they were very close and that her death devastated him and changed him.
Shannon Gibbs
Shannon was Gibbs's first wife and love of his life. They married in December 1981 and had their daughter, Kelly, sometime in 1982. It is clear they loved each other dearly and they were together for many years, and was his longest romantic relationship Their marriage was by all accounts a happy one, and ended on February 25, 1991 when both Shannon and Kelly Gibbs were killed by Pedro Hernandez after a tragic car accident. At the time, Gibbs was enlisted and fighting in Desert Storm. Shannon witnessed the shooting of a Marine in Oceanside, and she identified the killer as Pedro Hernandez, a Mexican drug dealer working Camp Pendleton.
Gibbs is shown to have deeply loved Shannon and treated her very well. When learning of her death, Gibbs fell into a state where he could not be happy. He was angry and wanted to get revenge, as he did by killing the man responsible for their death. Even though several years have passed, Gibbs has never been able to fully overcome her death and often thinks of the missed moments they could have had together with their daughter.
Kelly Gibbs
Kelly was the daughter of Gibbs and his first wife, Shannon. She was born in 1982 and was killed on February 25th, 1991, at the age of eight. Pedro Hernandez set out to kill her mother so she couldn't testify against him. Prior to her death, Gibbs was shown to treasure his daughter and do anything he could for her while also trying to raise her properly. He took her death extremely hard and continued to be haunted by it over the years. He is described as being great with children and the flashbacks we see of her portrays a close relationship and deep love.
Diane Sterling
Diane was Gibbs' second wife. In the season 9 episode "Devil's Triangle", Gibbs tells Diane that he liked her—he always liked her, and still likes her. Diane tells him their marriage fell apart because she was in love with him, but she could not compete with Shannon. According to Diane, she was his “human anti-depressant” and Gibbs was her Shannon. And she knew Gibbs just married her to get over Shannon. She also took her huge alimony from divorce and Gibbs’ grandfather's watch. Gibbs mentions several times that she cleared him out after their divorce. As potentially the fiercest natured woman he was married to, Gibbs tried to keep his distance from her as he often did not want to deal with her angry way of handling things and inserting herself into his work. Upon her death, he did show great remorse and sought to bring her killer to justice.
Rebecca Chase
Rebecca was Gibbs' third wife. She is introduced in season 12. She and Gibbs divorced because Rebecca cheated on Gibbs with the man that she married. Like with his other wives, his tried to avoid when possible from both not wanting to remember their relationship and how it fell apart from her affair.
Stephanie Flynn=
Stephanie was Gibbs' fourth and final wife. She lived with him during his service in Moscow, Russia for about a year. They divorced because it was revealed in the season 3 Mind Games (episode), that he was so obsessed with catching serial killer Kyle Boone.
Ellen Wallace
It is revealed in season 16 that Gibbs and Major Ellen Wallace had previously been engaged at some point. She was believed to have died in the Hail & Farewell (episode) in the September 11th 2001 attacks but was actually murdered the night before. Gibbs ended up breaking off the engagement two months before her death.
Jenny Shephard
Jenny was Gibbs' former partner and lover when they were on assignment together in Paris in late 90s. They never took their relationship further and ended up breaking up shortly after their assignment, even though it was implied by Jenny that she had second thoughts on her decision to not continue their relationship. When she reappears in his life years later, the two of them can be seen to still care for one another and they share some sexual tension. They became friends after she became Director of NCIS. She was the Director of NCIS from 2005 until her untimely death in 2008 when she was killed in a diner in Los Angeles. Jethro took her death extremely hard because they were so close, especially since her death was connected to their former work.
Hollis Mann
Hollis was Gibbs' serious relationship for a while. They had a mutual break-up after Hollis put in for retirement, and Gibbs did not appear to be as ready to commit.
Margaret Allison Hart
M. Allison Hart as she was known on NCIS, was a lawyer to Gibbs' old enemy Col. Merton Bell. Although they opposed each other over several cases, they were also attracted to each other sharing a cold piece of pizza and a beer together on some occasions.
Dr. Samantha Ryan
Samantha who is a psychologist, her and Gibbs' relationship was very short. She assisted Gibbs and his team on several cases but he was often annoyed by her mental mind games on him and others.
Jacqueline Sloane
Jacqueline "Jack" Sloane had shared a close bond with Gibbs. Their bond was so close to the point that the other team members questioned if Gibbs and Sloane had a "thing." During the time at NCIS, they viewed each other as reliable and trustworthy co-workers. The two share a kiss in Sloane's final appearance (Season 18 episode 8).
Joann Fielding
Gibbs' mother-in-law. They are shown to have a somewhat tense relationship as Joann has blamed Gibbs for keeping her from her daughter and granddaughter when he was still enlisted and their eventual death. During the episode Mother's Day, they are shown to have a difficult time speaking to one another as her involvement in the case began to be revealed. Although he understood her reason and allowed her numerous chances to confess to her actions.
Leroy Jethro Moore
John Sydney
A man Gibbs knew in his childhood and appeared to be very close to, possibly seeing him as a close family member. During The Last Link (episode), Gibbs was shown to somewhat avoid Sydney until forced to return to Stillwater on a mission to find a missing medical bracelet as Sydney needed to fulfill a vow he and other men from Stillwater made. During that time, Gibbs revealed that he was deeply upset that Sydney had left without a word when he had been nine years old but came to understand why when learning the story behind Syndey's sudden departure. With the vow being fulfilled, Gibbs accepted being viewed as a son by Sydney and promised to lay him to rest next to his military brothers with their bracelets.
Friendships
Mike Franks
Donald "Ducky" Mallard
Donald and Jethro have been close friends for many years, decades. He is the only person Ducky allows to call him "Duck". Even though Gibbs is a hard man to get to know and they are very different individuals, the two of them are very close and considers each other to be family. They also respect and protects one another and value each others advice and opinions. They grew even closer when Dr. Mallard had his heart attack.
Tobias Fornell
He has formed a rather brotherly bond with Tobias over the years, due to both being divorced by Diane. Gibbs calls the man by his first name on a regular basis and earning himself the title of Uncle Gibbs to Emily Fornell. They have a strained work relationship because of their sometimes conflicting interests, because they work for different agencies, but they still respects one another. Fornell often drop buy Gibbs' basement and have a talk. The pair were very close, Tobias even hinting at one point that he was aware of Gibbs having killed Hernandez back in 1991. At one point when Gibbs is pushing him away emotionally—out of guilt—Tobias tells his friend, “Gibbs, this is me! This is me. You do this to other people; not to me." Tobias is the main reason why then FBI Agent Alden Parker decided to let Gibbs go in Season 19. As Parker would put it, "Let's just say he convinced me that you don't belong behind bars."
Colleagues
Leon Vance
Leon Vance was hired on as the Director of NCIS by SECNAV (Secretary of the Navy) after Jenny Shepard was killed in the season 5 finale. He and Gibbs sometimes butt heads when it came to certain protocols and criminals. It took them both a long time to trust one another and they are not close, but they have a working relationship that gets things done. They also have some sort of mutural respect and he gives Gibbs a long leash because he trust Gibbs' gut.
Stanley "Stan" Burley
Anthony "Tony" DiNozzo
Even though they are very different individuals they have built up trust towards eachother. Gibbs is often annoyed with DiNozzo's no stop chatting and movie referrals, but at the same time appreciates the fun and more juvinile vibe he brings into the team. Tony has massive respect for Gibbs and trust him 100%, and is always the most loyal to Gibbs out of all the other team members. In Season 7, Episode 12 Flesh and Blood when Gibbs first met Tony's father he gets "defensive" over Tony. Gibbs also questions Tony's father about his relationship with his son and is vocal about his disappointment over that he does not know his son as a grown man. He stands up for Tony as an individual and calls him "one of the finest young agents he has ever worked with. In Tony’s last scene of NCIS, he tells Gibbs, “I would say thank you, but I don’t think it quite cut it.” The relationship Tony has with Gibbs is one of a special kind.
[Abigail "Abby" Sciuto](/wiki/Abigail%5F%22Abby%22%5FSciuto "Abigail "Abby" Sciuto")
The relationship with Gibbs and Abby is one of a kind. Gibbs treats Abby like his daughter and loves surprising her. He would take her out for dinner the evening before her birthday every year, and using her first language—American Sign Language—with her on many occasions. He has massive respect for her and she is definitely the one person at NCIS he is the most patient with. He buys her her addiction Caf-pow almost every day, while he rarely buys anything for the other team members.
Caitlin "Kate" Todd
Jethro and Kate were also like father and daughter, but they had a little bit of a tougher relationship. Kate ended up getting killed in season 2 finale when the man they were hunting (Ari Haswari) shot Caitlin in the head with a sniper rifle. It is visible that he had respect for her as an Agent and that the respect was mutual.
Timothy "Tim" McGee
Although he never really understood McGee's technical language, Gibbs trusted McGee greatly when it came to computers. At the same time, he knew McGee well and knew that he potentially could not lie to others so he would work things so that McGee's confessions were true while keeping him in as less trouble as possible.
Ziva David
Ziva saved his life early in season 3 and it is mentioned by Ducky that she was the team member he started trusting the soonest. He calls her "Zivers" and has stuck his neck out for her many times, when her loyalties has been questioned. He respects her skills and she views him as a father figure.
Eleanor Bishop
Nicholas "Nick" Torres

Trivia
- Most people refer to him as Gibbs, but there are a few exceptions. His father, Jackson Gibbs, his ex-wife Diane Sterling, and his namesake, Leroy Jethro Moore, called him Leroy. Shannon Gibbs, Donald Mallard, Jennifer Shepard, and a few others used Jethro instead.
- Interestingly, Abigail Sciuto, the former NCIS Chief Forensic Specialist, consistently called him Gibbs despite the obvious close relationship between the two. In contrast, he would call her both "Abby" and "Abbs".
- He, Timothy McGee, Jimmy Palmer and Donald Mallard are the only main characters to have met every other main character in the mothership.
- He knows American Sign Language (ASL).
- Gibbs's address is shown as "500 Block East Laurel St, Alexandria, VA" The address does not exist so Google Maps returns Laurel Rd, Alexandria, VA. Laurel Road ends at Gibbs Street.
- He used to never lock the front door to his house because he has already lost what was most important to him, and everything else can be replaced.
- After Margaret Allison Hart shows up in his house in season 7 episode 14 masquerade saying he doesn't lock his door, he gets a new lock which McGee notes in the beginning of season 7 ep 15 jack-knife.
- In season 15 he was seen both locking and unlocking his front door, even going so far as to give Jacqueline Sloane his keys in Skeleton Crew and telling her to lock the door when she leaves after having just met her.
- In the fourth episode of season 19, Great Wide Open, the mystery of how Gibbs got the boats out of his basement was finally revealed. It turns out he would break the basement wall to get them out and then rebuild the wall. However, it was alluded to much earlier in season 5 episode 14 Internal affairs McGee asks how he gets the boat out and Gibbs responds with "just break the bottle" a clear reference to a ship in a bottle alluding to the fact that he would break the wall down.
- There have been a few inconsistencies in his appearance during flashbacks with Shannon and Kelly. About half of his appearances shows his younger self while others showed him in his current appearance.
