There has been a surge, in particular, in the field of 'Electroceuticals'. As the name suggests, it is the amalgamation of pharmaceutical techniques with electronic applications. Electroceuticals, a term that has been recently coined by British pharmaceutical giants GSK encompasses a wide range of bioelectronic medicine that mainly employ electronic stimulations to affect and modify the functions that occur in our body. There has been an advancement using this method, particularly in the DBS technique used for the treatment of motor disorders like Parkinson's disease and Dystonia. The traditional DBS technique had its flaws and issues which were proving to be detrimental to the patient's health suffering from PD symptoms. Current research and device instruments have helped reducing these factors considerably. Here, we have tried to explain the phenomenon of Deep Brain Stimulations briefly and have explained the possible mechanisms of treatment. Also being discussed are the current research and advancements that have taken place in this field, thus showing how electroceuticals has helped better the technique for the treatment of movement disorders, in particular, Parkinson's disease.

Ionic liquids are one of the potential extractants for desulphurization of crude oil to produce ultra-low sulphur fuels. However, due to the constraints of economic feasibility and the broad domain of Ionic liquids, their varying affinity towards sulphur impurities along with the overall expensive methods of production, limit the selection of an Ionic Liquid that provides optimum extraction rates. We investigated the biphasic extraction of two sulphur compounds, thiophene and dibenzothiophene (DBT) from dodecane by using ionic liquid systems of ethyl methyl imidazolium (EMI) and butyl methyl imidazolium (BMI) cations; and tetrafluoroborate (BF4) and thiocyanate (SCN) anions. The molecular arrangement and extraction mechanism of both sulphur compounds at the interface of dodecane-ionic liquid system are studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We observed that electrostatic interactions between the aromatic plane of sulphur compounds and cations of ionic liquids are the major forces responsible for the extraction of sulphur compounds.

Research paper thumbnail of Nanoscale Vaccines for Influenza

Nanomedicines for the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases , 2023

In... more Influenza, a contagious respiratory illness, spreads easily via contaminated surfaces and air. In majority of the cases, the symptoms are minor, including fever, fatigue, chills, and runny nose. In very few cases, it can lead to severe complications, specifically in people with underlying health conditions, older persons, and children. Vaccines have proven to be the most effective way to prevent and control the spread of influenza. Vaccination can reduce illness and lessen severity of infection. However, current challenges to effective influenza vaccination include a need for annual vaccination, constant mutations to the circulating strains, emergence of antigenically novel vaccines, a need of adjuvants for improving the immunogenicity in immunologically weaker population, and less cross-protected immune responses. Here, we summarize the conventional and modern technologies used for the production of antigens for immunizations. Additionally, we have reviewed the use of various adaptive pathways, like use of adjuvants and mRNA technology, and tracked their progress in clinical trials. This chapter focuses majorly on currently licensed influenza vaccines, the potential challenges that arise because of influenza virus biology, and the vaccine approaches that address these challenges.
