No one should say we did not have sufficient advance warning of the gathering storm. Everyone should conclude that we did not act in a proactive and purposeful manner in order to avert the disastrous consequences of this perfect demographic storm. Despite the silver lining in the 2011 census data, the sun has not broken through the clouds on the New Brunswick demographic landscape. This paper analyzes New Brunswick's demographic antecedents and proposes a proactive strategic plan for New Brunswick's sustainable demographic future. Prior to the ascendance of internetization, economists had embraced the term globalization to describe the operational parameters of the new economy. The problem with the word globalization is that it is neither a new concept nor is it an appropriate descriptive for the contemporary transformational change precipitated by the spectacular technological inventions on the international economic landscape. The new word, internetization, describes more succinctly the transformative powers of the world wide web and the electronic information highway on the evolving dynamics of interconnectivity for the new global economy of the 21st century. Indeed, internetization captures the pervasive influence of technological change and electronic innovations on the global economy and all aspects of human endeavor for our civil society in the 21st century.

The ascendance of the new global economy of the 21st century has revealed the economic governance fault lines and the need to redirect the scope and substance of economic policy. This has been accentuated by the cataclysmic trifecta of the first three decades of the 21st century. Human capital has emerged as the driver for the new economy in the creation of the wealth of nations. In effect, the paradigm for the creation of economic growth has shifted from the resources under our feet to the brain power between our ears. This policy brief concludes by proposing a new institution of economic governance whose overarching mandate is to achieve full employment.

A peak 6,000 farm workers are employed during the September harvest, when another 7,000 workers are employed in wineries. Wages are higher than average in the Napa valley, but housing costs are also higher than in other agricultural areas, and many workers complain they are not much better off in Napa unless they sleep in their cars or camp along the Napa river. When local activists threatened to picket wineries to call attention to the lack of affordable housing, or to close the major highway through the valley in peak tourist season, Napa leaders acted, getting a state law approved that allows vineyards to assess themselves 7.66anacretosubsidizefarmworkerhousingabout7.66 an acre to subsidize farm worker housing about 7.66anacretosubsidizefarmworkerhousingabout300,000 was generated in 2002. Internetization is a new word that I have coined to describe our contemporary empowerment through global outreach and electronic connectivity. There is no denying that the 21 st century has precipitated profound structural change and empowered democracy through digital capacity and electronic connectivity. This paper analyzes the impact of internetization on e-democracy, social media, civics education, non-governmental organizations and global outreach. It also addresses the consequences of internetization on cybersecurity threats, election tampering and the contemporary challenges associated with electronic voting. This policy brief concludes with a set of recommendations embracing a new governance architecture, adapting the machinery of governance to electronic capacity and a strategic list of public policy initiatives directed to enhance the role ...

It confronts the challenges and underlines the opportunities during the decades ahead. The context of this transformation in macroeconomics will be dictated by the realities of the new global economy. The new economy is comprised of a trilogy of interactive forces that include globalization, trade liberalization and the information technology and communications revolution. Globalization has melted national borders and redefined macroeconomic policy. Free trade has enhanced economic integration and extended the macroeconomic architecture. The information and communications revolution has made geography and time irrelevant and enhanced the reach of macroeconomic parameters. The 21st century will lead to a rediscovery of Schumpeterian theory. Indeed, the pivotal role that Schumpeter assigned to entrepreneurship and innovation will underline the relevance of his economic theories and...

It is composed of a trilogy of interactive forces that include globalization, trade liberalization and the information technology and communications revolution. Globalization has melted national borders, free trade has enhanced economic integration and the information and communications revolution has made geography and time irrelevant. The role and functions of entrepreneurship in the new global economy have taken on added significance and face compounded challenges. We live in a challenging environment of rapidly changing economic events, where the private sector has become the most important engine of economic growth and the public sector has shrunk in importance and influence. Two recent economic events, the emergence of the new economy and the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008, have become the defining milestones which precipitated the need for a new vision and a new direction for the financial governance. The new global economy of the 21st century is composed of a trilogy of interactive forces that include globalization, trade liberalization and the information technology and communications revolution. The aftermath of the financial crisis has precipitated a more interventionist role for government and has laid the foundations for new institutional and regulatory structures that will impact on the financial landscape of the 21st century. This paper explores the future architectural governance landscape for the financial industry and the scope and su...

In a preparatory effort I review the contribution of major economists towards the development of a comprehensive theory of international migration. I conclude that the economic parameters of immigration theory have been a sadly neglected dimension within the historical evolution of mainstream economic theory. In the absence of a conceptual framework for immigration within mainstream economic theory countries of immigration have resorted to short term immigration policies in the reactive mold that are essentially an immediate crises management of demographic factors and labour market requirements. My research analyses the concepts of carrying capacity, optimum population size, absorptive capacity and defines the economic parameters of the immigration process through the selective use of Buchanan's theory of clubs. Public policy plays a key element in defining the operational parameters within which businesses can succeed or fail. The reason being that in the process of formulating and implementing their public policy response to the contemporary hot button issues, governments are also defining the microeconomic landscape and shaping the business environment within which businesses operate. The global financial crisis of 2008 triggered the Great Recession. The financial contagion effect impacted severely on national and multinational corporations, most national economies, triggered massive unemployment, created social tensions and revealed the limitations of the contemporary economic governance architecture. The public policy dilemma faced by most countries has been textured by two cataclysmic events- the global financial ...
