Its focus is, on the one hand, on the rethinking of the “spirit of modernity” and its principles, and, on the other, on the critical self-reflection. He argues against the uncritical adoption of Western cultural and political models and calls for the development of “responsible and creative autonomy” of thinking.
Within this twofold renewal process, translation has a major role to play by getting out from the limited experience of the ‘’following” translation and expanding into creative “exploratory” translation that transforms the Self and reconsiders its relations with the Other.
Възможна ли е ислямска модерност? Концепцията за „разкриващ превод“ на Абдуррахман Таха IS ISLAMIC MODERNITY POSSIBLE? ABDURRAHMAN TAHA'S CONCEPT OF "EXPLORATORY TRANSLATION", 2024

The methodological framework of the analysis is set by the concept of epistemological crisis introduced by Alasdair McIntyre. Taha formulates three basic universal principles of modernity and considers each of them in its historical manifestation. According to him, the translation tradition in Islamic history has failed to create an autonomous creative process because its two major movements mimic thoughts, ideas and lifestyles that are neither deeply rooted nor organic to Muslim societies. Their common characteristic is imitation of ancient as well as of modern ideas. They should be replaced by the new concept of “exploratory translation„, which not only reveals the creative energy of the original text, but also allows recipients to turn it into a stimulus for their own creativity. According to Taha, a conscious effort to renew the translation tradition is the best way to create an authentic Islamic modernity.

Al-Fārābī's understanding that the ultimate happiness can be attained in the afterlife but only as a result of the efforts of man during his earthly existence bears the mark of the conflict between the two major tendencies in his thought - the demand to surpass the limitations of the material world and the demand to engage man in its organization. It is the concept of the perfect political order of the virtuous city governed by the Philosopher-prophet that fully reconciles all these tensions. Thus his philosophical pathos leads to a unified vision of the structure of all beings culminating in a social utopia with an epistemological foundation that not only his contemporaries but every community of men should strive for.

The formal structure of the debate adduces arguments against the Greek logic and its claims to be a universal tool for distinguishing between correct and incorrect speech. On the other hand, within the framework of the debate one can observe the clash between two different ideas about the sources of knowledge, the hierarchy of sciences and the different ways of legitimation of Greek heritage in the Medieval Muslim culture.
