Recognition lies at the heart of multiple contests around citizenship rights, identity politics, ... more Recognition lies at the heart of multiple contests around citizenship rights, identity politics, claims for material re-distribution, and demands for past harms to be acknowledged. This book seeks to consider where various contemporary contests over recognition are taking us. By looking at disputes around disability, race and ethnicity, nationalism, class, sexuality and ownership of the past, it explores the contemporary significance of recognition claims. In reflection of the global contexts of such disputes, the book draws on accounts from Europe, the USA, Latin America, the Middle East and Australasia. In doing so the book explores the following questions: Do we live in a moment where recognition is opening up to allow for greater space for varied or hybrid forms of living and mutual valuation, provided with rights and protection? Or is recognition paradoxically a means to narrow down options to more restrictive categories of acceptable ways of living and legitimate access to rights?

In response, feminists have been significant critics of queer ideas. This book, through the contribution of important US and UK writers, explores the debates between feminist and queer theorizing in order to seek out interconnections between the two and identify new directions in thinking about sexuality and gender that may emerge out of and at the interface.

How are questions of cultures and identities being reconfigured? What political communities and strategies are becoming possible and impossible in this context? What kinds of theoretical connections and alliances are being made? In addressing these and other questions the chapter authors explore themes such as: queer or feminist?; the distance between the global and local; bringing material and cultural analysis together; and the general legacy of feminism and queer theory.

These citizenship demands have, at least to a degree, been answered via a raft of recent legislation in the UK including the Adoption and Children Act 2002, Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003, Gender Recognition Act 2004 and the Civil Partnership Act 2004, and by associated changes in policy making and practice that emphasize 'Equality and Diversity'. In this article we consider how the implementation of sexualities equalities policies is related to processes of privatisation and individualisation. This is illustrated by using sexualities equalities work in local government as a case study to indicate how both processes of change and resistance are aided by these processes. The article draws on findings from an ESRC funded study of LGBT equalities initiatives in local government in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, which examined the views of those who now have a public duty to implement recent legislative and policy shifts and are obliged to develop equalities initiatives concerning 'sexual orientation' and gender reassignment.

Sexualities equalities work, which has for many years been marginalised, has now gained social and political currency and visibility, with greater inclusion of previously marginalised sexual and gender communities. This integration of (some) lesbians and gay men into social and political life as 'normal citizens' represents a significant shift with important implications for understandings of sexual citizenship and the meanings and importance attached to sexual identities This paper will develop and extend our previous theoretical work on sexuality and citizenship by considering these issues. It considers the broader ways in which social constructions of sexuality and gender are changing, and also whether the increasing citizen...

Although there existed women's groups and organizat.ions who were concerned with women's equality throughout this century, from the end of the 1920s, after the Suffragette movement, there was no coherent feminist movement in Britain. This was to change in the late sixties with the emergence of the women's liberation movement. This was a new style of feminism, which went much further and asked for far more than had feminists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Prior to 1970, feminists in Britain had campaigned for a better deal for mothers, to help make work within the home less tiring and stressful for women. Very few feminists earlier this century ever questioned that childcare and housework were women~ responsibility. They challenged the social conditions in which women had and looked after children, and did the work...

This timely text traces shifts at personal, national and international levels to fully assess the landscape of policy and theory today. Bringing together critical perspectives and original research, Sexuality, Equality and Diversity clearly outlines contested terms and key debates in the field. It explains how equality policy is developed and put into practice, examining what has been achieved by legislation so far and highlighting the challenges to overcome. Exploring the multiple identities and different agendas of various LGBT communities, this thought-provoking book draws on a range of rich examples to shed new light on sexual citizenship today. This is an invaluable guide through the complex terrain of equality and diversity, and is invaluable reading for students of sociology, social policy, gender studies and politics.

Research paper thumbnail of ‘You could see people squirming in their seats’: Sexuality and its Discontents in UK Local Authorities

In recent years the UK has seen a raft of new legislation concerning equalities and human rights.... more In recent years the UK has seen a raft of new legislation concerning equalities and human rights. This legislation, and the policy drivers issued by central government in relation to equalities, is interpreted in varied ways by the local authorities that are tasked with implementing them. Implementation is structured by the organisational cultures present in these institutions and their partner agencies, and in some cases, by the existence of overt or covert homophobia and biphobia. This paper presents findings from an ESRC funded study of the impact of recent policy changes. Whilst someauthorities have a long history of sexualities equalities work, heterosexism appears embedded in the cultures of others. This is apparent in the ways in which equalities is discursively framed (or erased), the location of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equalities at the bottom of the hierarchy of equalities initiatives, resistance to the imposition of LGBT equalities initiatives by staff, and the organisational cultures in which they operate. In some instances, overt homo/biphobia is evident, often reflecting the wider environments in which local authorities operate. Local authority employees in powerful positions may give clear messages to staff on challenging such resistance, but LGBT equalities work can be sabotaged by other individuals, often elected councillors. The tensions that officers have to manage concerning sexualities equalities work, between the remits of elected councillors and the requirements of equalities policies driven by statute, are noticeable. It appears that local authorities remain a site in which heterosexism and homo/biphobia are contested.
