Universal Music Group and dozens of music publishers sued Anthropic PBC for copyright infringement, alleging the AI startup’s chatbot produced verbatim song lyrics scraped from the internet without permission.

The copyright lawsuit appears to be the first from the music industry to target generative AI companies.

The complaint filed in federal court in Nashville contained a number of side-by-side comparisons of lyrics to popular songs and the output from Anthropic’s AI chatbot Claude.

When prompted, the chatbot will produce nearly identical lyrics to songs such as “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor and “Roar” by Katy Perry, the complaint said. ...
