Motion capture data is extracted to generate a motion library; this places the digital motion model at a fixed posture. The first step in this process is to configure the motion path curve for the database and calculate the possibility that two motions were sequential through the use of a computational algorithm. Every motion is then analyzed for the next possible smooth movement to connect to, and at the same time, an interpolation method is used to create the transitions between motions to enable the digital motion models to move fluently. Lastly, a searching algorithm sifts for possible successive motions from the motion path curve according to the music tempo. It was concluded that the higher ratio of rescaling a transition, the lower the degree of natural motion.

Using online tools such as Facebook and Google Forms it was possible to quickly illicit detailed information about 127 smartphone users from six countries. This dataset was then utilized to preview trends in the marketplace and draw comparisons and contrasts between different platforms and operating systems. The main conclusions are that users enjoy the freedom to customize their devices and whether they use Android or iOS operating systems, seems to make little difference in terms of functionality. Screen size appears to be the biggest hurdle to successfully using these types of devices and this will force users to become more creative in how they arrange their icons and folders.

LS is a user friendly, graphical web based add-on to the latest generation of web browsers, such as Google Chrome, making it easier and more intuitive to store and retrieve favorites (bookmarks) since it only uses two levels (six main headings & 12 sub-headings). A total of 98 participants completed the task of categorizing 18 thumbnails from specific websites, together with 18 thumbnails from random websites, under six main LS headings, i.e. Work, Lifestyle, Travel, Health, Education, and Money. This was followed by a recall exercise of 12 randomly generated websites. The results showed that the participants had a better correction rate in Money and Lifestyle, but a worse correction rate in Work and Education among the overall correction rate, appointed correction rate, and self-chosen correction rate, in terms of each category task performance.

The problem of who works best with whom and what type of personality is best to lead such a team is not well utilized in academic institutions. This paper seeks to present some new theories and concepts, which are realizable within an engineering educational context, to improve team working and inter-personal skills, as well as provide successful outcomes to projects. The main focus is on engineering design through Design, Make and Test (DMT), rather than design thinking. A new module entitled 'Systems Design and Computing', developed at the University of Southampton, is being used to improve Engineering Design Education using these tools and techniques.

The search for a more efficient graphical user interface solution to deal with the massive information overload situation faced by most computer users today is a pressing problem. CVs allow categorization of title words and phrases into the appropriate location recognized by the user, so as to facilitate easier information storage and retrieval. The results of this user study involving 152 individuals indicated that there is potential for a well-defined two-tier controlled vocabulary system to assist user categorization, information storage and retrieval in personal information management systems.

How, where and when to store information sources, such as websites, is becoming increasingly difficult as people spend more of their life online and use the internet in all aspects of their lives. Our survey of 202 internet users found that although 85% of the participants regularly use the favorites (bookmarks) function, 73% still have trouble finding a website that they have recently visited. Whether the strategy is to bookmark in a single massive list and use the search tool, or to bookmark into folders and sub-folders several levels deep, appears to make very little difference. This research proposes a contrarian approach, giving users a highly structured favorites (bookmarks) schema using only two levels, consisting of four main headings and 12 sub-headings. An open card sorting task was used to validate the utility of such an approach. The results and their impact towards a future user-based knowledge structure are presented in this paper.

Apart from external appearance, the most important is the comfort for users in designing an un-adjustable seat. A system or suggested principles which assist designers in designing the comfort of the seats to testees will benefit waist of users, and hence prevent them from potential discomfort and injuries. This study attempts to develop digital design platforms, and allows designers to measure the design scale of the comfort. We expect to find the association between seat parameter interaction and comfort. For example, when the seat height is much lower than the knee of testees, they can stretch calf forward if the space allows, so that their thighs contact the surface of the seat to share sciatic pressure in greater comfort. We believe to have changes of comfort in opposition to different seat parameter combinations. The final results will help effective reference parameters of comfort in seat design.

Participants were asked to execute a set of online tasks for bookmark management and take screenshots to further ground the findings. The results showed that 62% of the female participants preferred the 2D context and there was no significant difference between the 2D and 3D tasks in terms of their time taken, which indicated that they maintained the consistency of their task performance strategy and were not subject to the change of spatial dimension. In contrast, the male participants performed poorly in the 3D context, as opposed to the 2D environment, even though they stated that they preferred the 3D context. A possible explanation for this might be that most of the male participants (mean age 21.8 years, SD = 1.1) are regular 3D game players. Therefore, they tend to unconsciously prefer 3D over 2D. Although the null hypothesis was not disproved, the task time results showed a degree of significance in terms of gender and spatial context differences, which requires further investigation.

The image of a car is transmitted via wireless communication onto the PDA, which provides functions for measuring distances and changing parameters of the virtual car using graphical user interfaces (GUI). The updated car image is constructed on the fly on a PC server and sent back to the HMD and the PDA. Multiple users can look at a virtual car simultaneously and discuss its various aspects, enabling better evaluation of the car design.

Wrinkling is inevitable under pure shear loading. Four different hole diameters of 0, 0.8, 1.6, and 3.2 nm are chosen in this simulation. The results show that the number of ridges increases with an increase of the width of the graphene sheet. The shear stress induced in the defective graphene sheet increases with increasing temperature. In addition, the shear modulus of the defective graphene sheet also increases with an increase of temperature.

There is a growing realisation by military planners that to win the insurgency wars of the present and future, forward units will have to operate within the close confines of urban conurbations and for prolonged periods of time without support. Real-time information and intelligence on enemy strength, dispositions and tactics is therefore essential for battlefield success.

Despite the fact that many nanotech inventions have not emerged and might not in the near future, they are designed, visually-depicted, and debated, in popular media as if they were just around the corner. One interesting example is the concept of a space elevator, which has been made theoretically possible recently by the notion of carbon nanotubes.
