Empowering communities for sustainable development
Sobre nosotros
Casa Congo is a sustainability hub in El Astillero, Nicaragua, where the local community, volunteers and experts come together to create projects focused on climate change and socio-economic development. Located on the Pacific coast, only steps away from the Chacocente Wild Refuge, our facilities are built in harmony with nature and to support Casa Congo’s multidisciplinary programs. Our beach front hub consists of a workshop, a permaculture garden, a turtle nursery, a coworking space and private residences or coliving spaces to host volunteers. Casa Congo is in the process of opening a second hub in Palenque, Mexico. We promote knowledge sharing and welcome people from all over the world to visit Casa Congo and make an impact.

The Built by Nature Prize will be an important element of the evening programming at our upcoming Annual Summit #BbN24 (November 7, Amsterdam) and we're delighted to welcome our winner and runners-up as they join us in celebrating their innovations in biobased construction material: 🌟 From Singapore, Alireza Javadian from first-place Prize Winner Widuz -- a range of high-performance structural products from bamboo; 🌟 Nicholas Kaspareck from Casa Congo (bamboo-adobe housing programmes in Nicaragua and Mexico); 🌟 Elementerre's Doudou DEME, co-owner of #LMNTR in Senegal (locally sourced clay and Typha materials); 🌟 Armor Gutiérrez Rivas from Sugarcrete (a UK/India enterprise upcycling sugarcane waste into building elements). The map depicted below shows the global scope of Prize submissions (check out this interactive feature at https://builtbn.org/prize along with full descriptions of the entries) -- and we're pleased that our winners are joining us from overseas to showcase their materials and ideas, answer your questions, and build connections. Join us in welcoming them and finding out more about what the leading edge of biobased development looks like. Yale University's Mae-ling Lokko will take a moment to share her experience as a jury member of the Built by Nature Prize 2024, offering valuable perspectives on the innovative projects from this year’s winners. The main theme of the #BbN24 evening, "Investing in a Timber and Biobased Future" will hightlight the investor perspective, with Michael Batley from Systemiq Ltd. and Laurence Desmazières Partner at ICAWOOD sharing their insights. Paul Brannen, Director of Public Affairs at the The European Confederation of Woodworking Industries, will be front and centre in a fireside chat on the EU regulatory landscape; and we are very pleased to welcome Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, Global Leader of Climate & Energy, WWF to deliver the opening address. This means there'll be a lot of inspiring and relevant content; you'll find programme details here https://builtbn.org/summit.
