This paper describes an action research project aimed at contributing to this debate through some teachers' reflections on integrating grammar and writing in the writing class. Five experienced English Language teachers in a Singapore primary school were concerned that while their students performed reasonably well in grammar tasks done in isolation, they struggled with the effective use of grammar in writing tasks. The teachers participated in the project by attending professional development sessions to enhance their knowledge of grammar as a meaning-making resource, before engaging in teacher inquiry of some student compositions to better understand how their students used grammar in writing. They then proceeded to revise existing writing instructional materials to explicitly integrate grammar and writing. Finally, the teachers were asked to reflect, on paper, on their experience in being part of the project. Results show that the action research process led to teachers' enhanced grammar content knowledge, better understanding of students' gaps in writing, and improved teaching practices in the writing class.

With the escalating “free market” and competitive forces arising from the marketization of education, most universities see a construction of themselves as global universities as a necessity, where the global mark is valued as a signal of quality across markets and thus positions the universities as world-class. This study specifically examines how one very successful emerging university, the National University of Singapore, constructs and promotes itself as a global institution through three strategies.

In particular relation to universities, global competition between universities arises as choices between universities are made more accessible with increased mobility in terms of the ease of travel that comes with globalization. It is suggested that one response to this competition arising out of globalization processes, is the need for universities to re-look at their policies and reposition their identities as “being global” – where the “global” mark is valued as a signal of quality across markets. This paper examines how universities construct and promote themselves as global through discourse, which is increasingly used as a competitive resource in this era of globalization. This is investigated through a case study of how the National University of Singapore (NUS) achieves this construction and promotion of its identity as a global univers...

Several practicing school teachers attended a professional development grammar course which incorporated grammar exercises developed from some data from this corpus. Based on feedback gathered from these teachers via feedback forms, this article suggests that the authentic, contextualized and accessible nature of the learner corpora in question allows teachers to make pedagogical decisions on what grammar components to teach, when to teach them, and how to teach these in the Singapore school context.
