The El-Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) modulates the occurrence of fires in Indonesia through prolonged hydrological drought. Thus, assessing peatland vulnerability to fires and understanding the underlying drivers are essential to developing adaptation and mitigation strategies for peatland. Here, we quantify the vulnerability of Sumatran peat to fires under various ENSO conditions (i.e., El-Nino, La-Nina, and Normal phases) using correlative modelling approaches. This study used climatic (i.e., annual precipitation, SPI, and KBDI), biophysical (i.e., below-ground biomass, elevation, slope, and NBR), and proxies to anthropogenic disturbance variables (i.e., access to road, access to forests, access to cities, human modification, and human population) to assess fire vulnerability within Sumatran peatlands. Thus, cloud shadows detection is crucial in image processing steps. We integrated solar position modelling, projective geometry modelling, and spectral thresholding to detect cloud shadows in Landsat 8 imageries. We evaluated the algorithm using the window area of Mount Halimun-Salak, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. The best rate accuracies of cloud shadow detection using the algorithm was obtained at producer's accuracy, user's accuracy and κ of 63.79%, 70.58%, and 0.66, respectively. Possibility of improving the algorithm for correcting the reflectance of the objects under the shades instead of removing is discussed.

Based on the formal definition of forests from the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Indonesia based on canopy cover, agroforestry might be considered as forest, whereas the canopy cover >30%. The research aim to estimate canopy cover base on integration of Lidar and Landsat 8 OLI of agroforestry in the Cidanau watershed. The response is in the form of how it absorbs and reflects the energy in every range of wavelength. The absorption and reflection curve is known as a spectral pattern. The spectral pattern of each object can be used to determine the object. In agriculture, the spectral pattern of plants can be used to determine the health condition of the plant. Drought is one factor that can affect the health of the plant. By identifying the spectral pattern of the plants, the effect of drought on paddy can be identified. This experimental study tried to identify the spectral pattern of some varieties of paddy and different growth stages. A spectrophotometer with a wavelength range of 350-1052 nm was used. Four varieties of paddy were planted in a greenhouse and being treated in drought conditions from the stage of vegetative, generative, and reproductive. Indonesia is known to have large mangrove area and diversity. It is estimated that the area of mangroves in Indonesia in 2015 reached about 3 million hectares, with 15 families, 18 genera, 41 true mangrove species and 116 species of mangrove associations. Unfortunately, the area to continue to decline due to degradation and conversion to other land uses, especially ponds and built up areas. Usually, mangrove degradation assessment is carried out by field survey and relying on Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) clustering derived from satellite image data. Field surveys require a large amount of time and cost, meanwhile NDVI clustering is either inaccurate or too rough. Therefore, exploration of another methods are needed. Our result showed that pixel value of Band 5,...

It flows from Bogor Regency and crosses Bogor City, Depok City, and Jakarta before finally flowing into Java Sea through Jakarta Bay. The water quality in Ciliwung River has degraded. Many factors affect water quality. Understanding the relationship between land use and surface water quality is necessary for effective water management. It has been widely accepted that there is a close relationship between the land use type and water quality. This study aims to analyze the influence of various land use types on the water quality within the Ciliwung Watershed based on the water quality monitoring data and remote sensing data in 2010 and 2014. Water quality parameters exhibited significant variations between the urban-dominated and forest-dominated sites. The proportion of urban land was strongly positively associated with total nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen concentrations. The result can provide scientific reference for the local land use optimization and water pollution control and guidance for the formulation of policies to coordinate the exploitation and protection of the water resource.

Rapid economic growth in the region has led to increased population growth and Built-up land use. Increased use of built up land in urban areas can cause urban sprawl which can have serious impacts that will damage the structure and function of urban area ecosystems, thus hampering the development of regional sustainability. Landscape Metrics can be used to analyze the urban form of the Cekungan Bandung Area in time series from 1983-2015 so that it can identify the changing trends. The results of the analysis show that during this period urban growth in the Cekungan Bandung Area showed a positive trend with a compact, connected, un-fragmented and near-square urban form. Being a concern of Patch Density (PD) and CONTIG values because it shows an increasing number of patches so that patches are more fragmented and the distance between the built up patches shows the trend is increasingly scattered on the edges of the Cekungan Bandung Area which can cause urban sprawl.

Analysis of multi-year time series of land surface attributes and their seasonal change indicates a complexity of land use land cover change (LULCC). This paper explores the temporal complexity of land change considering temporal vegetation dynamics, in other words, distinguishing the changes regarding to their properties in long-term image analysis. This study is based on the hypothesis that land cover might be dynamics; however, consistent land use has a typical, distinct and repeated temporal pattern of vegetation index inter-annually. Therefore, pixels represent a change when the inter-annual temporal dynamics is changed. We analysed the dynamics pattern of long-term image data of wavelet-filtered MODIS EVI from 2001 to 2007. The change of temporal vegetation dynamics was detected by differentiating distance between two successive annual EVI patterns. Moreover, we defined the type of changes using the clustering method, which were then validated by ground check points and secondary data sets.

Deforestation and drainage put pressure in peat lands in Muaro Jambi. The purpose of this study is to detect and monitor changes in peat lands in period of 2001-2013 using multi-temporal EVI and NDWI. By knowing the temporal patterns of vegetation index (EVI and NDWI) obtained from MODIS data, we can see the significant changes in the patterns that describes land use/land cover changes in an area. Wavelet transform applied to reduce residual noises of the values. Results of the analysis show that there is a slight gap value between EVI and NDWI, however both index have a similar pattern characteristic. Most of the changes detected by the index occurred in August-October with low rainfall, high temperature and high hotspot number. These conditions help people to burn faster and easier, but also worsen its effects. 1.

In fact, determinants of deforestation are relatively more detectable using remotely sensed data than determinants of forest degradation. Forest canopy closure is one important determinant of forest degradation. In this case, loss on forest canopy closure indicates forest degradation. As part of our activities in developing methodology for estimating forest canopy closure, this paper describes our methods on estimating forest canopy closure based on ALS LiDAR point cloud through the development of a three dimensionally explicit voxel-based model of forest canopy using an open-source modelling platform of NetLogo 3D 5.3.1. Window area in South Sumatra, Indonesia was selected as the study site. Estimated canopy closure resulted by our model was compared with the results from commercial software (i.e. LiDAR360). Such terrain effects can produce reflectance bias of pixels in the same category. This study was aimed at exploring robust algorithms for correcting satellite imageries from terrain effects, applicable for either Landsat 8 or Sentinel-2A imageries. Mount Halimun-Salak and Mount Gede-Pangrango, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia, were selected as the window areas to evaluate the algorithm. We developed algorithm, which combined solar position modelling, illumination modelling, and simple statistical model to remove the terrain effects.
