In 1947, India having achieved its independence was faced with the question of who an Indian was... more In 1947, India having achieved its independence was faced with the question of who an Indian was and who an Indian was supposed to be. From our history, we can observe that the questions of identity haunted the young nation since before its inception. The establishment of a common national identity was not possible in the Indian subcontinent in the same way as it had been for other Commonwealth states. The Hindu caste system dictated almost every part of life for the society. The colonial legislations introduced by the British had direct confrontations with the caste system. Even though none of this legislations succeeded in making the caste system non-existent and the prejudice and discrimination employed by it, the laws thrived in introducing revolutionary changes in the lives of those considered outcasts by the society, namely the dalits and adivasis. The western education empowered the rise of a subaltern voice in a nation
