Our understanding of Universal Grammar dictates that all languages and dialects are worth studying; however, all variables need to be controlled while eliciting data from native speakers of the studied language. The issue of what constitutes valid data in linguistic research has been a matter of discussion for a long time (Quine, 1953, 1972; Chomsky 1961, 2000, and other resources in Gervain, 2003). Intuition and introspective inspection techniques which have been excluded from other behavioral sciences are still being used by linguistics researchers widely, along with researchers whose native language is Turkish as a data elicitation method (Gevain, 2003, Aygen 2008). This article argues that the lack of a systematic data elicitation technique leads to serious theoretical problems, and a solution to this problem is proposed. The problem and the solution are illustrated through a case study on research done on the Turkish ECM (Exceptionally Case Marked) structures. Key words: Morpho-syntactic variation, data inconsistencies, grammaticality judgements

The chapter identifies and discusses four major inflectional categories marked on the verbs, namely, tense, aspect, mood, and voice from a descriptive linguistics approach. This approach provides a much more systematic and simple presentation of how English marks these less-commonly understood and potentially confusing concepts. The chapter first reviews the basic terminology and concepts relevant to the topic and presents a concise survey of both the traditional and the more recent theoretical analyses of English tense, aspect, mood, and voice. Further, it explains and exemplifies the recent analysis of tense, aspect, mood, and voice markers as a demonstration of how they can be taught accurately and in a pedagogically simpler way.

In this paper, I adopt Hagstrom (1998) to account for Turkish facts. Turkish is a wh-in-situ language where the Q-particle does not appear in wh-questions except for echo questions. I argue that a null-Q exists in cases where its overt counterpart does not appear. The distribution of the Q-Particle will be given in (I); the problem of analyzing embedded questions in Turkish will be presented in (II); similarities in the function of Japanese and Turkish Q-Particle and wh-words, and differences in Turkish and Japanese &Sinhala Q-Movement will be discussed in (III); evidence on Q-movement in Turkish based on intervention I would like to thank Danny Fox, Shigeru Miyagawa, and Adam Szciegniak for their comments on an earlier version of this paper, Tamer Tosun and Osman Perksoy for their gra...

The present study explores language learners' metacognitive awareness of reading strategies which may ensure their differences in autonomy and the success they achieve in their reading tasks. The study, which was done with 40 university students of English, employs two tests (Kruskal-Wallis & Pearson Correlation), which convincingly demonstrate a close relationship between Reading ability and metacognitive awareness of reading strategies.

Four textbooks used commonly in the training of Turkish as a Second Language are selected and evaluated using the systematic criteria developed by Ansary and Babaii (2009). Some aspects of these criteria which can be valid for Turkish are determined by the author of this article in order to evaluate the textbooks in question and the results are presented for discussion. Keywords: Turkish textbooks, Turkish as a second/foreign language, textbook evaluation criteria. Key Words: Agreement, Feature Hierarchy Hypothesis, Repair, Syntactic Processing .

This work includes the transcribed, transliterated and annotated version of a manuscript written by Mehmet Emin Aygen, Chief Judge (Heavy Panel Court) (1884-1960). This manuscript, written in 1942 in Istanbul, is a unique historical testimony to fishing practices and the fauna in the Bosphorus Strait. Information on the author, a linguistic analysis of the language of the manuscript, as well additional material including photos of fish currently fished in Istanbul and its vicinity are also added. The major goal of the manuscript is to identify and describe the kinds of fish and other edible sea creatures, techniques used to fish them, the best seasons to fish and eat them, recipes commonly used for the seafood in the late Ottoman and early Republican era. With its major content, the manuscript is of value to historians at large, and marine historians, in particular. Many kinds of fish identified in the text no longer exist in the Bosporus. The text is of value for linguists and social scientists as well. The language of the text exhibits the lexicon and writing conventions of the era.
