The New Millennium (NM) itself has been witnessing to a continuum of global crises in succession, onsetting with the spread of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) in 2002 and prolonged until 2004, costing the global economy of an estimated US$5 4 billion. Indeed, the first decade of NM was crisis-ridden but culminated to witnessing the resumption of the global economy post the recession eventuated from the tremors of sub-prime crisis. The tourism economy globally saw a robust growth in the subsequent decade of 2010-2019 but fell quickly to the clutches of COVID-19 Pandemic that shook the humanity as never before by March 2020.

It is about people, places, structures and interactions of varying nature and intensities that eventually contribute emergence of a diverse set of outcomes viz. economic, socio-cultural and environmental. Perhaps the reach and linkages of tourism is far wider and complex and that makes it a more powerful agent of change than most other forms of activities. This has been evident especially from the last two decades of 20 th century, where not just the individual nations became strong advocates of tourism but more importantly, the international institutions and protocols that took more proactive role on the cause of tourism. Multi-faceted impacts of tourism on various components of destinations are becoming growingly manifestive, and by now, its role in the socio-economic development has been explicitly acknowledged. In many ways, tourism has emerged to represent the ...

In doing so, efforts were also made to compare some leading schemes from across the world, chosen on the basis of leading inbound tourist markets for India, to bench-mark the criteria catalogue and assessment/evaluation process. Along with many fresh recommendations, the authors also pitch for a rating-scale based scheme to capture the sensibilities of 'service quality'
