It offers the quick exchange of data among geographically dispersed users to help them build and maintain social relationships. However, with the recent changes to its News Feed, Facebook has inundated users with information. Many users are bewildered and are unable to filter out irrelevant information. The purpose of this study is to explore the extent of information overload experienced by Facebook users. Additionally, this study explores the factors associated with information overload on Facebook users. Results reveal that females experience more Facebook information overload than males. Furthermore, it was found that frequent visitors to Facebook are subject to more irrelevant information and are confronted with excessive information. These findings have implications for the design of user interfaces that could address perceptions of information overload on the Facebook News Feed.

The sharing of personal information on social networking sites can bring positive outcomes; however, it can also lead to issues such as identity theft and cyberbullying. This research examines the privacy practices of Facebook users, capturing not only their usage and perceptions of Facebook’s privacy management capabilities but also adaptations such as self-censorship of shared information. Data from the current study are compared with data collected in 2007; results suggest that Facebook users today are even more actively engaged in privacy management, are less likely to accept friend requests from unknown entities, and are more proactive in their responses to privacy incidents.

However, the ubiquitous nature and ease of use of technology leads to a plethora of recorded information. Processing this varied and often redundant information has overloaded students, which is detrimental to learning. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature related to the problem of information overload in the online educational domain, including causes, available solutions and its influence on knowledge construction. The results show that until recently the research focus has been on cognitive technological solutions rather than collaborative learning. New themes such as collaborative approaches for managing information overload and its implications on knowledge construction are emerging.
