Hear from our very own Dr. Wetjens Dimmlich about his experience at WCPFC21 as he begins his new role at the GTA to push for crucial tuna management and fair labor measures at the global tuna RFMOs! 🐟 His reflections on WCPFC 2024 are now live on our website! Check them out 👉 https://lnkd.in/eidQ5T8W - The catching sector is the foundation of the seafood industry. A strong, binding Crew Labour Standards CMM will ensure every fisher is treated with dignity and respect, creating a fair and sustainable future for the industry. The future of fishing starts with fairness. WCPFC must adopt a binding Crew Labour Standards CMM this week.
- Lives depend on transparency. A binding CMM must prioritize robust reporting and accountability to protect crew welfare and ensure safer working environments at sea. Urge WCPFC members to adopt a binding Crew Labour Standards CMM that includes mandatory safety reporting measures.
- Decent working conditions in the catching sector are critical for sustainability. Labor standards on the high seas can no longer rely on voluntary measures. The WCPFC must adopt binding protections to ensure fair treatment for all crew members. Support the adoption of a binding Crew Labour Standards CMM at WCPFC to protect fishing crews and ensure a sustainable seafood supply chain.
- Transparent recordkeeping is vital to protecting the lives of those powering the seafood supply chain. A binding CMM must include reporting requirements for serious injuries and fatalities to ensure accountability and improved safety. Call on WCPFC to adopt a binding Crew Labour Standards CMM with robust reporting requirements at next week’s meeting.
- Fishing crews are the cornerstone of the seafood supply chain. Flag states must fulfill their obligations under UNCLOS and ILO 188 to ensure decent working conditions for crews. The WCPFC has the opportunity to lead by adopting a binding measure to make fair treatment the standard. We urge WCPFC members to adopt a binding Crew Labour Standards CMM at next week’s meeting. Let’s protect the cornerstone of our industry.
- The GTA’s position statement for the 2024 WCPFC meeting in Fiji is now up on our website, including points on labor standards, electronic monitoring, harvest strategies, and more. Read the full position here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gu3Fn3X6
