๐ Diamidex raised 776'000โฌ... so far! ๐ Wanna hop on the ride? Crowdfunding is absolutely an exception among the financing routes for a #Water company... so it's hard to say what it means, on such a small sample (even with rockstars like Salinity Solutions and Kando following that path!) But if we zoom out and look at growth-stage companies overall: ๐ช In 2024, crowdfunding was less than 0.5% of the money raised ๐ฐ Rounds' success rate is aligned with Series A close rate (70-80%) ๐ฐ The average crowdfunded raise was $366k ... funny stats, sure, but here's the most interesting one: ๐ Research shows an "inverted-U effect" with successful crowdfunding lifting future rounds' success probability (and already VC-backed firms raising more, and from more investors) I understand that one as: VCs see crowd endorsement as a positive signal, and the crowd equally sees VCs' due diligence as a de-risking parameter. ๐ค ... which is probably where I should mention that in Diamidex's case, PureTerra Ventures will cut a follow-on cheque to their already endorsed company in symmetry with the crowd's enthusiasm ๐ ๐ค So... should you invest? I wanted to gather all the right information for that decision, so in this week's release of the #podcast, Sam Dukan gives us an open book on his rapid microbial solutions company! I had a blast recording this one (Sam is genuinely witty and brilliant) - I hope you'll have the same fun listening to it. (Listen to it even if you don't intend to invest, it's fun and full of French accent!) Find it out for yourself on your favorite podcatcher: https://lnkd.in/eq239fGAPS: Will I invest? Listen to the end of the episode ๐คซ - We are excited to see two of our portfolio companies, Membrion, Inc. and REDstack featured on this industrial water tech landscape by Visionaries Tomorrow. It is great to see #WaterTech get more interest and attention, lets keep the momentum going! We would also at least include KMX Technologies, and Transcend, among many others we have seen as well. ๐ง ๐๐ป๐ป๐ผ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ถ๐ป ๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐๐๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ถ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐น๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด โ but the market remains fragmented, opaque, and underfunded. At Visionaries Tomorrow, weโve been exploring the startup and scaleup landscape to understand where real technical and commercial differentiation is emerging. Today, weโre sharing a curated snapshot of companies building next-gen solutions across the industrial water value chain โ from real-time monitoring to selective separation and bio-based treatment. Below is a non-exhaustive overview of companies working on differentiated solutions across: ๐น ๐ฃ๐ต๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป (reverse osmosis, filtration, electrodialysis, distillation) ๐น ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐บ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น & ๐ฒ๐น๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฒ๐บ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ (oxidation, PFAS, resource recovery) ๐น ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป (membrane bioreactors, microorganisms) ๐น ๐ ๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด & ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฎ๐น๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ built for operational relevance ๐น ๐ ๐ผ๐ฑ๐๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต๐ป๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐ ๐ฝ๐น๐ฎ๐๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ๐ for industrial deployment ๐ Many of these companies are tackling horizontal pain points that cut across verticals like chemicals, paper, energy, food, and manufacturing โ responding to rising water costs, growing water stress, tightening regulations, and the need to recover critical materials. Weโre particularly excited about: โ ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐น๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐ฒ๐น๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฒ๐บ๐ถ๐๐๐ฟ๐ enabling cost-effective water reuse โ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น-๐๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ ๐บ๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด for intelligent operations โ ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐-๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ผ๐น๐๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ gaining traction in hard-to-treat streams ๐ If you're building or backing in this space, weโd love to exchange thoughts. And if your startup isnโt included here, drop us a message โ weโll keep iterating. - From hose watering bans in Sweden to drought-hit Cyprus, itโs becoming increasingly clear that water stress is a Europe-wide issue โ even in Northern Europe, where weโve often taken water for granted. Some striking statistics from this Financial Times article (link in comments): ๐ง On average, 25% of water in Europe is lost through leaks before it even reaches the consumer. โป๏ธ Only 2.4% of water is reused on-site. The EU estimates that โฌ23 ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ฉ๐๐ซ ๐ฒ๐๐๐ซ is needed to tackle these challenges. The European Commission is now encouraging member states to reduce water use by 10% by 2030. Itโs a clear signal that efficiency, infrastructure upgrades, leak reduction, and reuse need to be prioritized. And while we fully support this direction, itโs important to note: ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ๐งโ๐ญ ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ. Itโs a recommendation โ and recommendations donโt always lead to action. The good news? Thereโs a growing wave of innovative solutions already working on the EUโs priority areas. From (AI-powered) monitoring tools to on-site water treatment and reuse systems, at PureTerra Ventures, we see a lot of opportunity to transform how water is managed โ and we've already invested in several companies that are making this shift happen.Job van Schelven Dylan Perales Honor Meadows Tejas Vasa Liza Faber, PE Gijs de Bruin Nic Pannekeet Alexander Crowell Xavier van Slooten #WaterScarcity #Sustainability #Innovation #EU #WaterReuse #ClimateResilience #CircularEconomy #Venturecapital #startups
- With 9 of our 14 portfolio companies using #AI or #ML in water, what is necessary to make its uses successful? We have been exploring this conversation further with our thought partners and our portfolio company leaders. Some of our thoughts are: 1. High-Quality, Accessible Data Infrastructure ๐
: Transparency is necessary and should build trust in how the data is used. 2. Historical and Real-Time Data ๐ฐ๏ธ: models need to learn from something and be fed by relevant data. Sensors, satellite imaging, smart meters etc. can gather real-time data on usage, contamination, weather, and infrastructure for software interpretation. By working with a range of brands makes it more applicable across many customers. 3. Scalable and Adaptable Algorithms ๐: Water is local. Adaptation across users is necessary but should be built off common scientific and engineering principles. 4. Future Scenarios โฉ: The climate is changing, water and weather patterns are changing to scenarios that have never been seen before in modern times. Building in first principals allows for new conditions to be possible in the outcomes, not limiting models to only what we have experienced and recorded in recent history. 5. Insightful results ๐ก: Reporting data is one thingโbut turning it into actionable insights is even more valuable. Just as important is the flexibility in implementation: offering both integration with existing systems and a standalone software solution ensures seamless adoption by end customers. What do you think is necessary or desired to make AI or ML in water successful?
