The death occurred yesterday in his 84th
year of Mr. Henry Chapman, who was for
20 years an alderman of the City Council, and
who for a period commanded No. 1 Field
Battery of the old Australian Volunteer Artil-
lery. Mr. Chapman was a native of Cork,
Ireland, and coming to Australia 61 years ago,
secured a position with the firm of J. G. Hanks,
and Co., grocers, who occupied premises oppo-
site the old market building in George-street.
Eight years later Mr. Chapman commenced
business on his own account in Wllllam-strcet,
and carried on there until his retirement in
1917, after which he resided in Glebe, and
Mr. Chapman took a keen interest in muni-
cipal affairs, and served as an alderman for
close on 20 years, among his colleagues being
his uncle, Michael Chapman, who was an
alderman for 38 years. He was also a city
representative on the Water and Sewerage
Board. Joining the 1st Field Artillery soon
after settling in Australia, he rose from the
ranks to be major, and finally commanded
the battery. He was a keen bowler, and 30
years ago was one of the most familiar ligures
Mrs. Chapman, who was a daughter of
Michael Chapman, predeceased her husband
by 14 years. He leaves a son, Mr. Michael
Nason Chapman, of Faulconbridge, and three
daughters, Mrs. Wallach, Mrs. E. O'Donnell,
who is in the United States, and Miss Nellie
Chapman, of Manly. The funeral takes place
