Last week, during UN Climate Week, our CEO, Hans-Olav Raen, spoke about Yara Clean Ammonia’s dedication to zero-emission shipping and the urgency for immediate action in the sector. The key message throughout the event was clear, the future of maritime decarbonization depends on taking concrete steps now. To hit the 2030 targets, there’s a real need for clear regulations from the IMO. Without these, the industry can’t unlock the investments needed to scale clean fuels like renewable and low-carbon ammonia. Our team took part in key discussions, driving home some crucial points: 📢 We need consistent greenhouse gas rules so companies feel confident about investing in near-zero emission technology. 📢 There has to be financial support to close the cost gap between clean fuels and traditional ones, otherwise, demand for ammonia as a fuel won’t take off in time. 📢 It’s vital to establish clear guidelines for how we assess the life cycle of these fuels, so the industry knows what "near-zero emission" really means. 📢 Safety and training are a big priority — we need to make sure seafarers can handle ammonia safely. Through initiatives like ARISE, we’re working with partners to push these goals forward. The choices we make now will shape the future of shipping, and we’re committed to leading the way. Find more insights into our role in the green transition here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dfEk2GPd #ClimateWeekNYC #DrivingChange - 🌊 🚢Today marks #WorldMaritimeDay, where the theme is Navigating the Future: Safety First! and commemorating the 50th anniversary of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (#SOLAS) the key International Maritime Organization treaty regulating maritime safety . As ammonia emerges as a vital solution for the maritime industry, its responsible handling is paramount. Ammonia, the second-largest chemical produced globally, has been transported safely for over a century, primarily for fertilizers that support food production. With its potential as an emission-free fuel for shipping, we must establish new safety standards and procedures to ensure its safe adoption. At Yara Clean Ammonia, safety is our top priority. We are committed to integrating the lessons learned from ammonia in agriculture into maritime applications. Through our partnership with ARISE, we conduct large-scale experiments to enhance modelling tools and gather critical data on ammonia’s behavior in marine environments, focusing on absorption rates, heat generation, aerosol formation, and cloud dispersion patterns. We also work on comprehensive test protocols and evaluate detection and mitigation technologies to ensure the safe bunkering, storage, and use of ammonia as a fuel, targeting zero operational emissions on open waters. As we celebrate 50 years of SOLAS, together let’s prioritize safety in every aspect of maritime operations and embrace innovation to navigate towards a decarbonized future. Today I participated in a panel organised by Ocean Stewardship Coalition as part of the 79th UN General Assembly. Together with many other CEO largely representing the maritime sector, we urge the IMO and governments to accelerate the green transition by introducing a levy on carbon. Green fuel is an important tool to realise this goal. Clean ammonia is an efficient fuel and is already available - 🚢🤝 At Yara Clean Ammonia, we are proud to stand alongside maritime business leaders and cargo owners in supporting this crucial call to action for global regulatory support and collaboration in decarbonizing the maritime industry. Together, we can and must create a resilient and sustainable economy that thrives in harmony with the environment. The costs of doing too little too late will far outweigh the investments needed to transition to a sustainable economy. ⏰ The joint Maritime Decarbonization Statement released today emphasizes: 📌Immediate global regulatory action to accelerate zero and near-zero GHG fuels in shipping. 📌 International Maritime Organization (IMO) member states to unite on policies and funding to level the playing field for green marine fuels. 📌Accelerate sustainable fuel production and infrastructure to drive the green transition of the global supply chain. We are ready to do our part, in collaboration with governments, the UN, and other key stakeholders. 💪 Read the full joint statement here 👉 https://lnkd.in/e-m8CzW8 #UNGlobalCompact #FutureofShipping

On the occasion of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly, Maritime Business Leaders and Cargo Owners gathered at the United Nations to call on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Member States to support a global regulatory framework that in a just, inclusive, ambitious and timely manner accelerates the use of zero and near-zero Green House Gas fuels. The private sector stands ready to work with governments towards innovative policies and financial mechanisms that level the playing field between fossil and zero and near-zero GHG marine fuels. Read the full statement here: https://lnkd.in/e-m8CzW8 - 🚢 Green fuels must be made as affordable as fossil fuel. The Member States of International Maritime Organization can together make this happen by agreeing on a basket of measures that ensures price parity for scalable zero-emission fuels. Shipping lines, through the World Shipping Council, have proposed a #GreenBalanceMechanism (GBM) which we support. It proportionally rewards the use of truly green fuels and penalizes fossil fuels, thereby closing the price gap at the lowest possible overall cost. 🔄 The IMO has set ambitious GHG targets for 2030. Now is the time to implement measures that will deliver on these targets. 🌍⏳ We urge governments of the world represented at IMO to agree on concrete measures that will make green energy projects a reality in the short term.#giveusachancetochange #allthewaytozero

🌍🤝 Yara Clean Ammonia, in partnership with Pilbara Ports Authority and the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD), has reached a major milestone with the completion of the world’s first ship-to-ship ammonia transfer at anchorage in a working port at Port Dampier. The successful transfer of 4,000 cbm of ammonia between the Green Pioneer (owner Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd.) and Navigator Global (owner Navigator Gas) highlights the operational feasibility of Pilbara’s potential as a bunkering hub to fuel ships with clean ammonia. Supported by over two years of infrastructure development, safety studies, and regulatory preparation, the success of the trial was made possible through the collective efforts of key partners like MOL and Navigator Global. This achievement further strengthens Yara's efforts to decarbonize shipping and other industrial sectors. With ongoing projects to inject green hydrogen into ammonia production, Yara is driving the future of clean fuel solutions, building a sustainable supply chain to enable the hydrogen economy. 🚢 The knowledge gained will be used to assess ammonia transfers at other ports, further advancing ammonia bunkering.
