8:40AM - Getting around from Magazine Street
Ok, here's the deal. I was in NOLA for a few years after Katrina, and in those years was lucky enough to be either living, or to have friends with empty couches, in the Quarter. So I did Mardi Gras in the Quarter. I know all about parking and road closures and the general madness that is the Quarter during Mardi Gras.
But this year, I'm coming as a visitor, and my couch options are more limited. A friend of mine has offered an empty condo on Magazine Street. It sounds good - but I'm worried that I'll be, basically, trapped by the parades! I'm wanting to get some visiting in with friends - mostly uptown, but I need to get to the quarter/CBD at some point, too. How do people handle this? I'm looking at the last weekend - Feb 21 through 25 (I know on the 25th I'll have no problem driving...)
Are there places to park on the other side of St. Charles, so I can walk to my car and use it? Is there somewhere I can rent a bicycle? I think that would solve a lot of my problems.

6:30PM - Rex Parade
I was fortunate enough to have access to a parking lot on St Charles Ave. near Lafayette Square to veiw the Rex parade this year.
One of the highlights came when the bagpipe & drum corp stopped in front of us. a little girl talked to them and was invited by one of the drummers to play his drum. She was terrific! She had both the crowd and band members cheering her on. What a treat for those of us nearby.

5:30PM - Mardi Gras Streaming Video?
Can anyone recommend a good site that features streaming video of the Quarter, or anything Mardi-Gras related? I'm having a Mardi Gras get-together tomorrow in NYC and want to give my guests a sense of what it's like, although I know the parades are done rolling by the evening (the party starts at 8:00). I found video of the 2006 Rex parade that I'll use and just keep rewinding it (it's about 27 minutes long) but it would be great if we actually had a live feed.
Failing that, I'd love to find some quality video of this year's parades.

11:18PM - A Glimpse at Mardi Gras 120 years ago
"Before the day had advanced drunken masqueraders were numerous and made themselves repugnant to people who lined the banquettes to view the parade of Rex. [...] there was a degree of immodesty exhibited by nearly all the female masqueraders seen on the streets. It seemed that nearly every woman in town who has a nice shape or uniformly nice limbs was out displaying her attractive qualities, and in many cases their conduct was disgraceful. The particular case which suggested this article and the cartoon [...was] at the corner of Canal and Bourbon streets [...] the crowd of women [...] came rushing up to the above corner regardless of the pleasure or convenience of others and pushing right and left made a general disturbance. When remonstrated by the police they only became furious and elevated their voices to such a tone that they were placed under arrest. At this juncture the scene became disgusting. The women rolled around on the banquette with clothes uplifted and scratching and biting the officers. Finally the beligerant females were overpowered and waltzed to jail." -- "The Mascot" newspaper, 9 March, 1888
1:32PM - Parades reschedualed due to weather
Three carnival krewes scheduled to roll tonight in New Orleans have either rescheduled or cancelled because of the weather, said a spokesman for New Orleans Police Department.
The Krewe of Muses has reschuled for Friday at 8 p.m., and the Knights of Babylon will roll Sunday at 11 a.m., said Officer Gary Flot.
The Knights of Chaos has decided not to parade because of schedule conflicts with other krewe events, he said.
The National Weather Service forecast calls for a good chance of rain tonight with northwest winds 15 to 25 miles per hour.

11:14PM - Mystical Krewe of Barkus
This year, I filmed the Mystical Krewe of Barkus parade. It's now live on Current.

Since 1993, The Mystical Krewe of Barkus has marched through the streets of the French Quarter every Mardi Gras. It is the only Mardi Gras Krewe whose membership is made up of ONLY dogs (whose owners are allowed to walk with them).
By 2008, their membership has swelled in the years to over 1000 and has become one of the most popular parades of the entire season. Many thousands of people come out to see the King, Queen, their court and the rest of Canine Tailwaggers march through 13 blocks of the New Orleans French Quarter.
All proceeds of this parade go to benefit humane and animal rescue groups.

Lime juice to taste
Dark cane sugar to taste
The water used can be hot and the lime prevents scurvy.

The Krewe du Vieux Parade is schedualed to roll at 6:30pm Saturday , starting and ending by Chartres & Elysian Fields, parading around Marigny and the French Quarter.
