Both patient groups differed significantly from the control group on low amplitude of accommodation, esophoria or exophoria, vergence duction suppression, and convergence and divergence recovery ductions. Only the affective group showed significantly reduced fusion at near distance, and only the schizophrenic group differed significantly from control subjects on disorganized left apex formation. These findings appear to confirm the presence of visual perceptual disorders that can cause disability in psychiatric patients, with important research and rehabilitation implications.

This study reviewed 115 patient charts in a tertiary-care hospital to determine the correlates and predictors of the financial cost of CO. The mean duration for CO was 13.9 days with a median of 7.5 days. The cost average was 3,415perincidentwitharangeof3,415 per incident with a range of 3,415perincidentwitharangeof144-$68,500. The median cost was $1,872. The most common diagnosis was organic mental syndrome. Significant predictors of CO were disorientation, psychiatric medication used, and absence of alcohol use.

A national survey of 50% of randomly selected U.S. cardiovascular physicians belonging to the American College of Cardiology was conducted; 796 of 8854 physicians who received the questionnaires responded. Cardiovascular physicians were aware of indirect associations between depression and coronary artery disease (CAD). However, 49.9% were unaware of depression as an independent cardiac risk factor; 71.2% asked less than half their patients with CAD about depression; 79% used no standard screening method to diagnose depression. Among cardiovascular physicians, 84.8% reported that between 1% and 50% of their patients have depression, and 49.2% indicated that they tr...

They compared presenting symptomatology of treatment completers with treatment noncompleters. A retrospective study of the outcome of a multiple group psychotherapy treatment program using the Drug Use Screening Inventory-Revised Version (DUSI-R) to assess change over time was conducted. Depressive disorders were the most prevalent psychiatric diagnoses (68%), and marijuana was the substance most commonly abused on a frequent basis. Treatment completers showed improvement in behavior problems, health status, and social competence. As part of an integrated treatment program, multiple group psychotherapy is a promising treatment modality for adolescent patients, comorbid for substance abuse and psychiatric diagnoses, pending further assessment of the complex issues involved in combined treatment.

Cardiovascular physicians often refer depressed patients with CAD to mental health professionals and recommend exercise, relaxation training, stress management, psychotherapy, and diaries for their patients. Among cardiovascular physicians, 55.5% treat depression/CAD with antidepressant medication: sertraline (28%), paroxetine (16.1%), fluoxetine (10.8%), escitalopram (8.7%), citalopram (7.9%), bupropion (4.4%), tricyclic antidepressants (3.8%), and venlafaxine 2.9%.

Advancements in neuroscience show that it has neuroprotective properties suggesting a possible efficacy in stroke, Alzheimer's and dementia. There is also evidence showing lithium protection of neurologic injury by changing GSK-3 inhibition in animals.
