So far I'm not in love, but I look forward to downloading free software for my new palm-based device. Various instructions were contradictory, vague or very provider/model specific, so I decided to give it a try and fiddle with various settings to see if it could be done under my situation. This article is the result of my trial and error. As a disclaimer, I only have the Blackberry 8700g, Windows XP Pro, T-Mobile Unlimited Internet service plan (non-BES) to test with. I cannot test other configurations, but I'd be delighted to hear about your findings. There are a LOT of screen shots in this article. I consume news in a manner that would give these guys pause. IMHO, news aggregators are the internet news addict’s equivalent of a funnel and hose at a frat house beer bash. When I switched to the Blackberry 8700g, I knew that hunting and pecking around for my news fix with a web browser wasn’t going to cut it. After a few false starts looking for an RSS Reader that would run well on the 8700g and wasn’t going to cost me an arm and a leg, Joe Brandt from the Logic Lost blog pointed me towards the Bloglines RSS Reader.Read more... I’m still making some course corrections and exploring third party software possibilities. My previous Sidekick II could just barely make its way to the two-day mark before it began its pitiful drones for power. Anyone who has owned one knows exactly the sound I’m talking about. I think it was scientifically developed to make you feel like an abusive pet owner. This morning I’m staring at my Blackberry 8700g which hasn’t seen a charger since it arrived five days ago. As we speak it sits and occasionally chirps pitifully at me. Some of these pathetic sounds are phone calls that I occasionally can answer by energetically pounding buttons at random. The hiptop system has that nifty aim/web proxy in mind.If you don't know what I'm talking about, tmobile/danger run proxy servers for the device. The one for aim will keep you online on aim even if you drop data service. Wile in dead air, if anyone sends you anything via time, the proxy server will keep it in queue till you get data again. You can also queue up msgs on your device till you get data. The web proxy will truncate the page your viewing, fixing tables so they suck less on a mobile browser, shrinking images, and so on. This saves time downloading the page, plus costs for data service, then again if you've got a sidekick data's for free.My question is, is there anything like this system, but for the Treo? I know Opera has a web proxy setup, but their browser doesn't work with Palm, yet. Thanks. I personally will be walking away from it, but not because of the usual issues.I've realise that the SK just doesn't have enough of the features that I have been wanting. It was a great trainer PDA, but now I need expandable memory, opensource apps, and other such things. I will miss it's keyboard, and I am trying to find a suitable replacement with that feature as one of my main points of comparison. The graph on the linked page shows the MPx as being availablein 2H (2nd half of the year), despite recent rumors that claimed otherwise. This is the third version T-Mobile has released, unfortunately GPRS or 3G were not integrated into the successor of the MDA 2, but they have plans to add Blackberry push email support by Q4 2004. Also works if someone from a real phone wants to make a phone call to you. What makes this cool is I've got that phone number where ever there's a computer with a net connection, so if I got a California number with my VoIP account, I could go to China, get on a computer there, load up the VoIP software, and still be able to make local calls to San Francisco without having to pay extra. It's all (mostly) through the net.That sounds cool and all, but I'm not going to be able to find a free computer everywhere, with a mic and head set and internet access, and I don't want to bring my laptop everywhere with me. That's where the MPx comes in. It's a cell phone and PDA, it's got a mic and speaker, and it supports WiFi. I could be walking the streets of Berkeley, want to make a phone call, enable WiFi, sniff out a network, open up my VoIP app, and make calls all day, without having to use any of my cell phone minutes through ATT or Tmo. Shit I could disable GSM all together.Hiptop2 will fail, the MPx will own. Any questions?
