Femme Fatale (original) (raw)
Lilah:I looked at him, as he talked about my old neighbors. "Exactly how many people did you talk to?" I asked curious as to how many people, he could've run into from the grocery store to here.
I thought about his question though and shrugged. "Not everything, just almost everything. I like to think of it as getting in practice for becoming a lawyer." I smirked a little. Well that and my teen years had consisted of a whole no reins, no rules philosophy.
Wes: "you a rebel teen, seriously now?" My voice dripped with sarcasm and I couldn't stop myself from laughing. "Sorry it just slipped." Regaining my composure I put the last food stuff away. "So what now, care to take me for a walk around the town?"
Lilah: "Oh come on it's not that unbelievable and sure why not I have to face them at some point."
Wes: "yeah" Leaving the house I looked to her "so little bit till we can call an early lunch, have any ideas or a place to go?" He looked around "Someone said there was a good diner up the road..."
Lilah:I looked at him, as he mentioned the dinner up the road. "We can't go there, Bob and the boys go there."
Wes: "Bob and the boys? The working men go there or something?" I raised an eyebrow why bar me from a diner, some cover up? "Alright then is there some coffee joint around?"
Lilah: I sighed. "No, you want to go to the dinner fine we'll go to the dinner." I might as well, since I was bound to run into them anyway. They had to know that I was in town by now, after all news travels lighting fast in small towns like this one.
Wes: I smirked slightly Lilah was backing down more and more this town really had a hold on her. As I saw the diner I opened the door to let her in "Ladies first" I followed her in and looked around at the half full diner.
Lilah: As we walked in all eyes turned to me. Sheriff Bob Wilson smiled, as did his little group of men. "Well never thought I'd live to see you come home." this of course got everyone's full attention.
Wes: I suddenly felt on the spot but not at the same time. "Guess that would be partially my fault" Now all eyes shifted on me...maybe not the brightest move but the tense in this room was huge.
Bob looked past Lilah at the new comer with the accent. "And you are?"
Wes: I thought before speaking normally I'd go completely formal with my whole name but small town means big pride and I don't want them to think I think little of them "Wes Pryce, nice to meet you Sheriff...?"
Bob nodded and gave him a small smile. "So how exactly is it that you know our darlin' Delilah over here?" I just looked at Bob annoyed.
Wes: "We worked on a few cases together back in L.A." The lie seemed small I tried not to get too involved I wasn't sure what Lilah wanted to tell these men exactly.
"So you're a lawyer?” he asked now unsure of him.
Wes: "More of a private detective...I go where the jobs are whenever I can get them"
Bob nodded, and seemed happy with the answer. "Have a seat." He looked over to the counter. "Al, get this man a drink." He then looked back at Lilah. "It's good to have you home Darlin' town's just hasn't been the same without you."
Lilah: I looked around. "Funny seems the same as when I left." I sat down at one of the diner stools.
Wes: I sat down at the bar stool and took a sip of my drink. Internally I sighed for passing whatever test and now I could focus on finding more about her "oh really now, was she a main attraction here before? She never talked about home back in LA"
Bob and some of the guys laughed. "Her daddy was the best defense lawyer this town's ever had, may he rest in peace. And for as long as I've been Sheriff here, she's been a pain."
Wes: I glanced over to Lilah and held back a laugh "oh really now? Seems her mischievous ways haven't been lost among the years" I couldn't resist it was too perfect "did she used to always think she was right about everything?"
"Oh girl was the sweetest little girl you'd ever meet, but you tell her no, and well it wasn't pretty." Bob smiled a little.
Wes: "oh I can believe that" I leaned back and took a long drink.
"And her mother Anna, that woman was a saint. Shame about what happened to her though." Bob said.
Lilah: I decided to just sit back and let Wes enjoy himself.
Wes: "yeah..." I looked down at my glass and back to the sheriff "so you been here awhile ever think she'd leave this town?"
"Oh hell yeah, she was four when she told her daddy she wanted to be a lawyer like him. By the time she turned thirteen she was ready to leave, had a line of suitors around the block, by the time she hit sixteen, spitting image of her mother too." It was clear that Bob and the boys loved telling this story.
One of the other guys decided to chime in. "Only ever had eyes for one of them though, David Gallaher. The cutest couple around too, boy was crazy about her." Bob nodded and smiled. "Told everyone in town that she was it for him, he was going to marry her. Almost made it too, if it hadn't been for the ass of a stepfather Anna married."
Wes: “Her stepfather didn't want her to see the boy, this Gallagher kid? Or what" I was getting into this story and into this town...at the moment I wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do.
"Walter didn't take to anyone tryin' to tell him what he could and couldn't do. And he didn't care who got hurt, when he was trying to keep, what he thought was his." Bob explained.
Wes: I nodded sounded like many people he knew and wished he didn't he sighed "My father wasn't any better...but in a since of I'm never live up to his standards" I sighed.
"Walter was a drunken ass, who thought he owned my town and her. David did what he could... Anyway we had the wedding, well that is it was all set up. And she looked so beautiful in that white dress. I swear that man made me hate my job most days, but never as bad as that day. I mean how do, you tell a seventeen year old girl, a bride to be for that matter that the groom's not coming." He sighed and took a long drink.
Wes: I was taken back a little...so much of Lilah seemed to make a little more sense. I was at a loss for words...my brain took over as it soaked in the information I was just given...thinking of all that had happened with Lilah since I knew her the whys were becoming clearer.
"Anyway about a week later a big fancy limo rolls into town, and some lawyer looking msn gets out asking for her. I told the guy that she wasn't taken visitors. He didn't seem to care though, asked for her address and two weeks later, she left town. About two months later, I get a call out at Walter's place. I get there and the whole house is a flame, looked like he'd just fallen asleep with the heater on after having a few. No one here really cared much, given the fact that he pretty much destroyed everything Jack Morgan gave a damn about." He had another drink.
Lilah: I could tell that Bob and the others didn't know the real story behind Walter's death, which was how I wanted it to stay.
Wes: I looked over to Lilah and took a drink I was entirely speechless I was reduced to drinking for the sake of drinking. My mind had to process I was back to not knowing anything.
Lilah: After Bob's little tale, I tried to pay Al, but he wouldn't take it, so I just walked out of the diner, I needed some air.
