Mobile media as such is not new. The Greeks (mid-eighth century BCE) and Romans used wax tables (43–410 AD) for documentation and communication. From then up to now, mobile media have been evolving in their respective forms, features and functions. By 2022, online videos will make up more than 82% of all consumer internet traffic—15 times higher than it was in 2017 (Cisco, 2020 online). By 2023, nearly two-thirds of the global population will have Internet access and over 70% of the global population will have mobile connectivity. Having experienced many changes, challenges and chances over centuries, mobile media have always been functioning differently to the same overall objective, that is, to create and cater to time-specific needs, tastes, prefer- ences and styles in storytelling as mentioned in the second chapter of this collection (Fig. 1.1). In the context of constant innovation, one should remember that those who do not change and adjust to the changing condition can go out of business rapidly. Steven Sasson invented the world’s first digital camera while working at Eastman Kodak in 1975. It weighed 3.6 kg and shot a mere 0.01MP. The camera could store 30 images on a delicate cassette. The “Kodak moment” became a signifying moment in photography. In 1976, Kodak had 85% market share in cameras and 90% market share in film. In 2021, however, the company filed for bankruptcy. The first camera phone was introduced in Japan, the SHARP J-SH04 – 2000 and as indicated in the first chapter, most early mobile filmmakers used a Nokia N95. In 2007, Nokia tried to develop everything, including soft- ware for mobile devices, operating systems and an online video platform, which was called OVI. Apple’s business model based on the App store changed the entire smartphone landscape. With the iPhone 4s, which introduced 1080p as broadcasting standard video, Apple has secured its market share by October 2011.

The processes and effects of human social interaction in the age of mobile devices have been investigated by a myriad of disciplinary and cross-disciplinary perspectives, leading to a sizable and ever-increasing body of scholarship. But such scholarship is scattered, and has not yet been systematically examined to review what has been found, and to reveal what lies ahead for future research. Comparative and comprehensive, this edited handbook of research is designed to fill the void. This handbook of research will aim to offer a comprehensive, comparative, and critical review of previous studies. It will also be designed to map the direction of future studies, and to provide both mobile professionals and mobile users with timely updates and insightful recommendations on how to enhance human social interaction through mobile devices.

Our findings from the survey of 1,923 reveal some key differences. Specifically, the Shanghai respondents had a higher motivation for using the mobile phone for entertainment/relaxation and surveillance. Regarding the relationship between motivations for mobile phone use and social capital, results of multivariate analyses using the Shanghai sample show that entertainment and relaxation needs significantly predicted life satisfaction, while surveillance needs were significantly associated with leisure activity. In the Taipei sample, entertainment and relaxation needs significantly predicted leisure activity and life satisfaction. Finally the role of societal factors in accounting for these differences is discussed.

Our survey of more than 3500 college students in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan asks why young people turn to mobile phones for news and how the news-getting behavior is related to the level of press freedom in their respective societies. The results show that using mobile phones to read news and follow news posts on mobile-accessible microblogs is rapidly on the rise and significant differences among respondents in the four cities exist; press freedom was found to be negatively related to reading and following news via mobile phones. Finally, the study discusses the role of press freedom in accounting for these societal-level differences.

By applying the two-stage Use and gratification (U&G) approach, we first conducted in-depth interviews (n = 20) to explore older adults’ distinctive motives. Based on the 22 motives found in the qualitative research, we developed a questionnaire for an online survey (n = 690) to further investigate how these motives affect older adults’ engagement with health information on WeChat. As the result, six motive typologies were identified: information needs, social support, surveillance, social interaction, self-agency building, and technological convenience. To cater to the growing demand for mobile news, traditional news providers have switched from “mobile too” to “mobile first” strategies. To enhance mobile news communication, it is imperative for mobile news providers to stay abreast of mobile news consumers' changing expectations of mobile news experience in a news app. It is equally imperative to identify the gap between news consumers' expectations and what mobile news experience is embedded in a mobile news app. Using a mobile experience index, the authors of this chapter have located the venue and extent of the gap through conducting a survey of mobile news app users and a comparative analysis of indicators of mobile news experience in selected news apps.

Sampling two constructed weeks for each of 10 years, 1999 to 2008, content analysis is used to examine arts coverage in the Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao. The study benefits from groundwork laid by Janssen’s 1999 study of arts coverage in Dutch newspapers, in which not only quantity of content was reported but also hierarchical attention was paid to art forms over decades. Singapore is of interest as it represents a country where neither the arts nor newspapers are declining, and both enjoy significant overseeing by the government.

Little research has comprehensively looked into the components and origins of Asian values in journalism although their existence has been sporadically investigated. Consequently, the topic has been much mystified. Placed in the theoretical framework of ideological domination and control, the book is designed to demystify the topic by addressing nine questions regarding the above-mentioned areas through documentary research and historical-comparative analysis. It was discovered that Asian values in journalism reflected efforts to construct Asian press models and were also used to chart directions and dimensions for the press development in Asia, although the values were conceptually elusive and theoretically confusing. Another finding was that the Asian values in journalism are not purely Asian but do share journalistic traditions. One major finding is that the Asian values in journalism debate is an extension of the ongoing battle between Asia and the West for ideological dominance and control in journalism. Instead of sporadic and unsystematic studies, the author proposes an integrated approach in the search for Asian values of journalism and the construction of Asian press models

After conceptualizing a new nation positioning for China "harmoniously beautiful", the talk elaborated its operationalization in social, cultural, economic, political and ecological dimensions. Each dimension consists of four fundamental components, resulting in a nation-brand index (1-100). A holistic approach was proposed to map, measure and model China's nation-brand by using the proposed nation-brand index.

Operationalized in an index of 25 components for homepage while 36 for storypage, mobile experience was mapped and measured through a Web-based survey to measure the importance that mobile users paid to mobile experience and via a comparative analysis of the extent that mobile experience was actually reflected in mobile news apps. The results show that there was a big gap between the normative and the empirical. Possible explanations were offered while recommendations were made to mobile content and service providers as well as for further studies on mobile experience.

"User experience can be conceptualized in three different dimensions: (a) technologies, (b) desig... more "User experience can be conceptualized in three different dimensions: (a) technologies, (b) designing and (c) content. Much scholarship has focused on user experience made possible by technological and designing elements. Little research has been conducted on user experience made possible by content elements, especially in the context of mobile communication. This study is designed to fill the gap by proposing a set of mobile experience indicators and measuring mobile experience at the normative and the empirical levels.
The set of indicators consists of two subsets: front page indicators of mobile experience and story page indicators of mobile experience. The front page mobile experience can be reflected in 25 different dimensions ranging from customization to interactivity. The story page mobile experience may be present in 36 different aspects ranging from empowerment to integration. The same set of mobile experience indicators was used in a Web-based survey conducted in China and Singapore and an analysis of news apps.
The survey started on December 17, 2011 and ended December 28, 2011. It got 319 starts and 257 completes. The complete rate is 80.6%. The survey contained 82 questions to address 11 hypotheses. The survey was designed to measure the importance of 61 different indicators of mobile experience on the part of mobile users. The central question is to what extent mobile users think each indicator of mobile experience is important to them. Another purpose of the survey was to identify the shaping factors behind the importance mobile users attach to different dimensions of mobile experience.
After the normative measurement of mobile experience, an analysis of 20 news apps was conducted to measure the extent mobile experience indicators were actually employed in news apps. The news apps used in this study included those provided by news agencies, radio stations, television stations, newspapers, online news aggregators and online only news providers.
The results of the survey and the app analysis showed that on the front page more than 67.7% of the respondents attached importance to the 25 different indicators of mobile experience while only 25% of news apps actually used those indicators. On the story page, it was found that 66.64% of the respondents attached importance to the 36 indicators of mobile experience while only 15% of news apps used those indicators. Therefore, it was found that there was a huge gap between mobile users perception of mobile experience and news apps’ actual usage of mobile experience.
In the mobile world, although content remains important, more important than content is how to experience content. Content is available anytime anywhere, especially in the age of mobile communication characterized by the fact that every mobile user can be a writer, reporter, editor or publisher. It is mobile experience that can really attract mobile users. It is mobile experience that can really distinguish different content providers. And it is mobile experience that sells."

"The efforts to study press differences have been unremitting across five continents of the world... more "The efforts to study press differences have been unremitting across five continents of the world for more than five decades, resulting in a huge amount of scholarship. Although earlier efforts have provided much needed guidance and direction for press difference studies, they have become either outdated or inadequate in describing, explaining and predicting press differences in modern societies. Therefore, there has emerged a pressing need for further comparative research. As part of further efforts to theorize press differences, this study examined indicators and shapers of press differences.
Taking a normative approach, this study looked into 10 interwoven indicators of press differences: (a) independence, (b) freedom, (c) transparency, (d) plurality, (e) responsibility, (f) accountability, (g) honesty, (h) fairness, (i) public trust in news media, and (j) public interest served by news media. Using a scale starting from 0 (no advocacy) through 10 (maximum advocacy) to measure how each indicator is advocated in 42 countries, the study located differences, both the distance of each country from the ideal situation and also the distance from each other. And the results are highly mixed and complicated.
Beyond identifying normative differences, this study also examined the relationship between the identified differences and the social, cultural, economic, technological, and political environments to explore further differences in the way that various elements of the environment shape the way news media orient themselves. To that end, the examination included the human development index, economy freedom index, cultural dimensions indexes, Internet penetration rate, mobile penetration rate, political rights, civil liberty, democracy index, corruption perception index, and globalization index. And the investigation also located an equally mixed situation in the relationship between advocacy and the press environment.
In light of complexities and variances shown in advocacy of normative journalism and its relationship with the press environment, the study proposed a new approach to further comparative studies of both indicators and shapers of press differences.

development and documentation of Singapore’s growing arts scene. Sampling two constructed weeks for each of 10 years,
1999 to 2008, content analysis is used to examine arts coverage in the Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao. The study benefits
from groundwork laid by Janssen’s 1999 study of arts coverage in Dutch newspapers, in which not only quantity of content
was reported but also hierarchical attention was paid to art forms over decades. Singapore is of interest as it represents a
country where neither the arts nor newspapers are declining, and both enjoy significant overseeing by the government.

To cater to the growing demand for mobile news, traditional news providers have switched from " mobile too " to " mobile first " strategies. To enhance mobile news communication, it is imperative for mobile news providers to stay abreast of mobile news consumers' changing expectations of mobile news experience in a news app. Equally imperative it is to identify the gap between news consumers' expectations and what mobile news experience is embedded in a mobile news app. Using a mobile experience index, we have located the venue and extent of the gap through conducting a survey of mobile news app users and a comparative analysis of indicators of mobile news experience in selected news apps. In our paper, we also offer our insightful analysis of the identified issues and causes.
