Adopting an interpretive sensemaking perspective on narrative, we address the narratological basis of the evolutionary epic and examine the potential for the narrative to inform a new relationship between management and the natural environment. We suggest implications for management theory and practice by examining elements of the narrative.

Rationales concerning its use govern all forms of work activity. The case of psychoanalysis is considered as an example of a therapeutic enterprise that has foundered on its temporal recipes. The demand for shorter, sharper, faster therapeutic procedures is making analysis increasingly marginal as therapy. The writings of psychoanalysts from Freud to Lacan on time and analysis are considered and contrasted with more recent concepts of appropriate therapeutic temporal formats. It is suggested that the concept of faith as well as the unsuccessful search for an effective therapy need to be considered as explanations of psychoanalysis's inexorable lengthening.

In a speech to a shareholder’s meeting of Teldar Paper, Gordon Gekko, an archetypal raider planning to take over the company and, as we find later, asset strip and sell it on, mounts a swingeing critique of its management, an eloquent defence of his own actions and a business philosophy that survives.

It provides an historical analysis of the business school's evolving role.FindingsDebates about the nature of the business school fall into two camps, one that argues that the business school is a professional school, and another that says the business school needs to be a better social science school. This paper suggests an alternative perspective, more geared to a view of management as an art, rather than a science, offering less economics, more humanities and history.Originality/valueThe paper aligns itself with a growing call for business school reform and suggests how alternative disciplines might help shape its future.

Yet, surprisingly, they have received little serious attention. This book provides a sober and evidence-based assessment, charting the history and character of business schools in the light of current debates about the role of universities and the evolution of advanced economies. Previous commentators have viewed business schools as falling between two stools: lacking in academic rigour yet simultaneously derided by the corporate world as broadly irrelevant. However, over-concern with criticism risks ignoring the benefits of reform. What business schools need is reconfiguration based on new relationships with academia and business. Such change would deliver institutions that are truly fit for purpose, allowing them to become key players in the 21st century's emergent knowledge societies. This timely critique should be read by academics and policy-makers concerned with the present state and future development of business education.
