- “The speed of oncoming #glacier melt in high-altitude regions is transforming life for people in the mountains,” writes Erin X. Wong in ‘The Voice from the Mountains’ an essay on ICIMOD in Atmos Magazine Volume 09: whose theme is KINSHIP. “Protecting life in the mountains depends on keeping global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels… [but] disasters [are] already starting to imperil mountain life today,” propelling “once-hidden mountain communities into the global spotlight”, Wong writes. These include Wong’s interviewee ICIMOD glaciologist and founder of Save Our Snow Tenzing Chogyal Sherpa, whose childhood was intimately intwined with frozen reserves of ice in the mountains. He remembers “making tea with water drawn from reservoirs of melting ice, playing outside in the snow until his face turned red, building snowmen with his brother, and stumbling after monks as they skied expertly down the gentle slopes. “It was only when Chogyal moved to Kathmandu and studied environmental science that he really saw the stark reality of how global temperature rise was impacting his mountains. ‘My home-town, my way of life, the Sherpa people—they’re all at risk,’ Chogyal tells Wong. “Mountain communities’ traditional beliefs are in line with science: Changes in the environment are the direct result of pollution and overuse. Returning to a symbiotic relationship with the natural landscape can protect them,” says Chogyal. “Unlike small island developing states, where sea-level rise impacts the entire country, mountain communities often live in rural, less populous regions of much larger countries, like China or India. They hold no seat at the United Nations, and they may be minorities in their own countries,” writes Wong. “We’re in a very precarious position,” said Jamyang Wangchuk, who cycled from Thimpu to Everest and back to collect meltwater from a glacial lake, then cycled towards COP28 in Dubai, documenting the scars of other climate disasters he saw along the way. “What we’re now seeing is this diversity of voices coming through—of experiences, of languages, of expertise, and an increase [valuing of] Indigenous and local knowledge,” said Carolina Adler, of Mountain Research Initiative (MRI). “Saul Luciano Lliuya, a Peruvian farmer and mountain guide whose family lives below the glacial lake of Palcacocha in 2015 filed a lawsuit against German energy company RWE for its contributions to climate change, arguing that it should help pay for adaptation measures to avoid a future flood.” The case will continue this year. “As a mountain resident who has chosen to fight for the future of his home, Lliuya has become an icon in climate advocacy.” Follow #SaveOurSnow to fight for the future of homes in the mountains in the Hindu Kush Himalaya: www.saveoursnow.earthRead the full article: https://lnkd.in/eEu9WGHA #ClimateChange #Sherpa #Himalayas
- The Prime Minister of Bhutan and Heads of Delegation and Environment Ministers from six of the eight countries of the Hindu Kush Himalaya (Bangladesh, China, India, Nepal and Pakistan) held a high-level event on the margins of the COP earlier this week in Baku.Babar Khan, Coordinator of ICIMOD's work on Regional Action and Collaboration, who was at the meeting, says: "The message that came out very strongly is that we all need to work together" to tackle the increasing and emerging risks the region faces from temperature rise caused by fossil fuels. Khan is a member of ICIMOD's delegation to this year's COP, a team that includes researchers, as well as experts in negotiations, and advocacy. Throughout this year’s COP, we’re sharing voices from our region and beyond to emphasise how high the stakes are and to point to the solutions. - Floods, cyclones, heatwaves, pollution. Syed Shahjahan Ahmed, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bangladesh lists the devastating climate impacts Bangladesh, one of the most climate vulnerable countries on Earth, already faces. "And we have no financial support to recover from these adverse impacts," he says. ICIMOD spoke to Ahmed on the margins of the global climate conference taking place in Baku this week, where this year, negotiations focus on finance. It's estimated that developing countries need $1.3 trillion in climate finance. Our first COP29 debrief is from ICIMOD Director General Pema Gyamtsho, Ph.D. ICIMOD is on the ground in Baku, pressing for an urgent increase in the amount as well as in the speed of delivery of climate finance for the acutely climate-vulnerable countries of the Hindu Kush Himalaya. As the first week of the annual climate conference draws to a close in Azerbaijan, Gyamtsho reflects on key ambitions, and high-level events, including a Heads of Delegation meeting of six of the eight countries of the Hindu Kush Himalaya hosted by the Prime Minister of Bhutan, which focused on deepening regional cooperation, and a key meeting on soaring Loss and Damage needs hosted by the Government of Nepal. Throughout this year’s COP, we’re sharing voices from our region and beyond to emphasise how high the stakes are and to point to the solutions. Our team is on the ground in Baku for the full two weeks, monitoring key developments, forging new and strengthening existing alliances, and supporting negotiators from our Regional Member Countries to ensure their priorities are heard. "Not meeting adaptation today means increasing more losses and damages in future, which means to say that the sustainable development aspirations of the people and the communities would not be met," she says - describing current funding for this region as "seriously, very, very, low." This finance gap risks the loss and even the reversal of two decades of developmental gains in a region that still has stubbornly high levels of malnutrition. "That [reversal] is something none of us can afford to do," Maharjan says. "Adaptation finance, adaptation knowledge is going to be critical.” Not only must international public finance go up, she says, but also private sector innovation, and national public finances. As well as following the negotiations and discussions on adaptation, Maharjan will be hosting a session with colleagues from the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), focusing on how crisis-induced changes are affecting people's lives, livelihoods, and economies, as well as exploring the anticipatory actions needed to address these challenges. - SMOG DIPLOMACY: As parts of India and Pakistan are blanketed in thick smog, with densely populated cities seeing record-breaking levels of pollution, public radio international news magazine The World focuses on a new effort to make progress on transboundary air pollution. The network’s Jeremy Siegel speaks to ICIMOD air pollution expert Bhupesh Adhikary about this month’s diplomatic push for clean air. “Pollution comes to a head when the usual relentless emissions from factories and a growing number of cars is compounded by crop burning, trash burning and fireworks from Diwali celebrations,” reports Siegel. “The air pollution issue here is a regional problem”, says Adhikary, “to really solve the problem countries must come together to work on the issue and deliver at scale.” Full interview: https://lnkd.in/gPqAQnsN #AirPollution #AirQuality #SouthAsia #Smog
- Smog engulfing the Indo-Gangetic Plain, especially the major cities of New Delhi and Lahore, has made headlines around the world this month, with pollution levels spiking everywhere from Punjab province in Pakistan to the northern part of Bangladesh. With pollution levels hitting 400+ in Delhi, authorities have launched a Graded Response Action Plan to control dust and construction activities. In Lahore, where pollution levels exceeded 1,000, schools have closed to limit children's exposure to pollution. Prolonged exposure to harmful pollutants is linked to diseases like stroke, diabetes, respiratory illnesses and even death. 15% of deaths in Pakistan and 18% of deaths in India in 2021 were linked to air pollution, according to The State of Global Air 2024 report. This timelapse, made by Arshini Saikia, PhD is drawn from our Air Pollution Dashboard. - “The high mountains are where the rapidly changing cryosphere and atmosphere interact with key ecosystems, diverse societies and the headwaters for rivers that support over half of humanity,” John Pomeroy, Director of the Centre for Hydrology at the University of Saskatchewan and UNESCO Chair in Mountain Water Sustainability states. “My message is that we can help to adapt and, make the case for mitigation of the incredible changes that are coming over the next few decades and centuries. “If we don't do this, we lead to disaster. “We lead to a complete deglaciation of those mountain ranges, by the end of the century and into the next. “And we lead to the loss of mountain snowpack and a low elevation snowpack in societies that so depended upon for the water resources, for billions of people downstream. “And of course, by not getting climate change under control, then we lead to the loss of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets and the dramatic sea level rises of those for, fishing, which will mean major cities around the ocean around the world will be lost in the civil to incredibly expensive flood defences. “It's much cheaper and much more reasonable to protect this. Now keep the water where it belongs as snow and ice in the mountains.” As this year’s COP29 in Baku opens, we’re sharing voices from our region and beyond to emphasise how high the stakes are, and to point to the solutions. In this excerpt from an interview at last year’s climate COP, world-renowned hydrologist John Pomeroy emphasizes how urgent it is we act to save the mountain cryosphere.
