Thiol compounds like beta-mercaptoethanol, cysteine, dithiothreitol, glutathione and thioglycolic... more Thiol compounds like beta-mercaptoethanol, cysteine, dithiothreitol, glutathione and thioglycolic acid intervene in the Lowry's method of protein determination when thiol proteases are assayed. To eliminate the interference by beta-mercaptoethanol a simple modification is developed folowing the Lowry's procedure. Treatment with potassium iodate, prior to the alkaline copper reagent addition, in the Lowry's method has trhurst out the interposing effect of beta-mercaptoethanol. Thus, potassium iodate acted as an effective eliminating agent. Therefore, this method would give accurate results in the assay of proteinases in the presence of thiol compounnds

Nostoc extract (0,1 mg/ mouse) inhibited about 90% passive cutaneous anaphylaxis reaction triggered by Anti-OVA IgE antibodies on Wistar strain male rat. It has also significantly down regulated the total IgE levels raised against different food allergens in different haplotypes of mice. These results suggest that the Nostoc extract contains compound(s), which inhibits various allergic responses.

Four different cyanobacterial species and their effects on rice growth and grain yield have been studied on short duration of rice cv. MTU - 1001, MTU - 1010, MTU - 3626 and ffiT - 1444 during the Rabi season. In our studies N.spongiaeforme is identified as one of the suitable biofertilizers for improving more than 45% of the rice grain yield in sandy loam areas of Konaseema in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh. Biofertilizer usage is a latest input technology in agriculture, which contribute eco-friendly, and cost effective yield of rice, which is one of the targets in Vision 2020.

Current research is now directed towards finding of naturally occurring antioxidant of plant origin. In Indian system of medicine Plectranthus aromaticus is an important medicinal plant and its leaves are often eaten raw with bread and butter, and decoction of its leaves is administered in the cases of chronic cough and asthma. To understand the pharmacological actions, in vitro antioxidant activity of ethyl acetate fraction of P. aromaticus was investigated for scavenging super oxide anion radicals, hydroxyl radicals, nitric oxide radicals and hydrogen peroxide, metal chelation and total antioxidant power. The fraction was also studied for lipid peroxidation assay using sheep liver homogenate. In all these tests, a significant correlation existed between concentrations of extract and percentage of inhibition of free radicals, metal chelation, total antioxidant power and inhibition of lipid peroxidation.

Epidemiological studies have suggested positive association between the consumption of antioxidant-rich foods and the prevention of diseases. The present study focuses on assessing the levels of various enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants in the leaf, flower and stem extracts of OCiMUM baSiiiCUM. This study has revealed that the total antioxidant activity and enzymatic antioxidants namely superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, glutathione peroxidase, ascorbate oxidase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and non-enzymatic antioxidants such as glutathione, vitamin A, vitamin E and vitamin C are predominant in the aqueous leaf extracts of 0. basilicum. The leaf extracts of 0. basilicum exhibited maximum inhibition (42%) of iron induced in vitro lipid peroxidation in erythrocytes.

Antioxidant, free radical scavenging activity, total phenolics, total carotenoids, vitamin C and ... more Antioxidant, free radical scavenging activity, total phenolics, total carotenoids, vitamin C and vitamin E content of Padina tetrastomatica, Sargassum illicifolium and Sargassum vulgare were carried out in order to expand their utilization in pharmaceutical and food industry. Fractions rich in phenolics were extracted from three brown algal species using methanol as solvent. Free radical scavenging activity was studied using DPPH photometric assay. Padina tetrastomatica exhibited higher levels of radical scavenging activity, total carotenoids, total phenolics and high vitamin C contents. Whereas, Sargassum species contain high content of vitamin E and low content of phenolics, carotenoids and vitamin C.

Acetone extract of L.citriodora exhibited most significant activity, Methanol and ethanol extracts showed moderate activities, whereas a mild growth inhibition was observed with Chloroform, Diethyl ether and Chloroform-methanol (3:1) extracts against all the bacterial species studied. The minimum inhibitory concentration (0.01 mg mL-1) of acetone extract showed that the fraction was most active against all bacterial species, especially gram positive bacteria. Total phenolic content was found to be high in methanol extract compared to other extracts.

This lowers a person's risk of cancer, alzheimer's and premature aging, where as Vitis vinifera (White grapes) contain resveratrol, the potent cancer-fighting antioxidants. The aim of this study is to validate the anticancer activity by infusion effect of pomegranate and white grapes extract on human cancer in vitro conditions and to elucidate the mechanism of its activity. Keeping this in view an invitro study was carried out with mixture of extracts of pomegranate pulp and grape fruit on brane shrimp to see the cytotoxic effects to be used as anticancer activity. In this study, we have taken the brane shrimp larvae orthotopically were tested for its cytotoxic activity. The pulp of these extract demonstrated a dose-and time-dependent inhibitory effect on cell proliferation and their biological functions. The findings in this study suggested that combination of these fruits extract might have potential anticancer activity on positive and negative cancers, which could be attributed, in part, to its DNA damage effect. The phytochemistry and pharmacological actions of all Punica granatum and vitis vinifera components suggest a wide range of clinical applications for the treatment and prevention of cancer, as well as other diseases like chronic inflammation, this would have the obvious advantage of supplementing together with the possible protective effect against cancer, and therefore this is an attractive hypothesis. Other details will be discussed at the time of presentation.

It has so many medicinal properties used mainly for wound healing, arthritis, antimetics, fabrifuges, rheumatism and diabetes. The plant containing polyphenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, proteins (6.6 %) and fibre (40.7 %). The present investigation deals with the GC-MS analysis and antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract of the leaves of the Phragmytes vallatoria plant. The antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract was evaluated by DPPH method. The results indicate that ethanolic extract of Phragmytes vallatoria possess considerable antioxidant activity. The highest radical scavenging activity was detected (IC50 = 735 µg/ML). Seven compounds were identified during GC-MS analysis. GC-MS analysis reveals that hexadeconic acid ethyl ester (30.88 %) was major component fallowed by 9, 12, 15-Octadecatrienoic acid, methyl ester (29.41) and 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid (19.44%). This study reveals that Phragmytes vallatoria plant having attraction sources of fatty acids as well as of effective natural antioxidants.
