The grading system indicates that at least a credit pass is adequate for a pass mark. Additionally, the subject roster has Literature in English, this is learned as an optional subject, meaning not every learner acquires this knowledge as there are a great number of other subjects like Metal work and Accounts, to name a few. In between the lines, English language and Literature in English are related subjects, and there is a case to argue for the integration of the two, as the title of the article suggests. Hence, the reason for this article and the research taken. So this paper is based on a research undertaken in Chipata District, in 2019, August-October. The reason for this research was to explore the perceptions of teachers and pupils of both subjects concerning their integration into one subject. This activity was based on a number of objectives, but this article will focus on one in particular. 2. LITERATURE REVIEW The improvement of results being the sore of revisions and integration of curricula, the integration of these subjects would greatly improve results as earlier stated. Other schools of thought have had a similar say over the matter. Moody (1981:1) argued that: In a second language situation, particularly one result of the rigiddivision between what is designated "literature" and all other kinds of writing is that the student begins to view his own ability to uselanguage as remote from or even incompatible with the uses oflanguage that he is studying. Thus argues for the case that proficiency in language use and formation would be improved if these two are integrated as they give the learner the ability to use and understand language in connection Abstract: English language is taught from grade 5 through to grade 12, and is used as a medium of instruction in all schools in Zambia. This is because it has been adopted as the lingua franca of Zambia, owing much to the ethnical situation where there are quite a number of languages. The language makes it easier to communicate in a cosmopolitan society as it becomes central both in the social and business lives of the citizenry. This language, and subject, is taught in schools to impart speaking, writing, reading and listening skills. Literature in English on the other hand is only taught from grade 10 to grade 12, and in tertiary level education. This subject imparts analytical skills coupled with poetry and drama. The subject includes entertainment and critical analysis skills development as some of its functions. The literature is written in English, hence the name. The learners are given an experience with several novels and plays and taught to analyse them by using literary devices. The researchers augment the need to integrate the two subjects so as to afford equal chances for the secondary school learners in order to impart skills missed by not learning literature in English.

Research paper thumbnail of The Efficacy of Re-Entry Policy and its Implications on the Zambian Education System

International Journal of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, 2017

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Zambia's education progression has been embedded in a policy document of ... more BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Zambia's education progression has been embedded in a policy document of 1996 namely "Educating our Future". The key thrusts for the Zambia Education Policy and implementation are Access and Participation, Quality and Relevance, Efficiency, Effectiveness and Equity. In the Ministry of Education teaching and learning services are provided through Provincial Education offices and District Education Boards at district level based on the Ministry of Education vision and mission. MOE (1996) in the mission statement reads in part, "... is to guide the provision of education for all Zambians so that they are able to pursue knowledge and skills, manifest excellence in performance and moral uprightness..." Through schools, particular skills, knowledge, positive judgement and well Abstract: The main objectives of the study were to establish the effectiveness of the re-entry policy of girls who fall pregnant, investigate if this Policy is in line with the aims of Secondary School education and the general aims and objectives of education in Zambia and to find out what can be done to make the policy relevant. This study is significant as it brings to fore the effectiveness of the re-entry policy of girls who fall pregnant in Secondary Schools with the major focus on how they behave when re-admitted. It is also relevant as it develops recommendations that may be useful in the contest to increase girl child retention and best approaches in the execution of this policy in the country and elsewhere where the similar policy had been implemented. The study employed qualitative and quantitative research methods to focus on the meaning that girl pupils make of their lives, their experiences, and their environment. The main research instruments were a selfadministered questionnaire and face to face interview. The findings show that the re-entry policy was effective in terms of retention of girls who fall pregnant in aspects of re-admission, progression, completion though there had been challenges in terms performance, high achievement and behaviour. The study concluded that although the policy was effective in areas of readmitting girls and ensuring their completion of education a lot needed to be done in terms of moral uprightness and excellence among young mothers especially on the aspect of deterring others from becoming pregnant and behaving well in school when they re-enter. The study further concluded that the girls who fell pregnant might not need to join the conventional schools but join the adult education structures of education. Recommendations included, the need for increased sensitisation to effectively deal with misconceptions that the Re-entry policy promotes promiscuity among young girls by promoting the benefits of the policy on both the individual and improving ability of girls to progress to higher levels of education, make available guidance and counselling services to girls on life matters; schools to take the policy seriously, ensure that learners have a strong relationship with at least one adult in the school, , improve the communication between parents and schools, increased supervision in school and more class room discipline, teacher reorientation and training to handle issues of pregnancy and re-entry policy and adult education, empowering of vulnerable families through community initiatives, as well as additional supports and adult advocates.

The article accounts for the meanings of identity in feminine and masculine perspective in relation to the curriculum. Identity is an unclear term often failing to contextualise; it has its roots from the Latin word idem, meaning same. However, the term implies both similarity and difference. It is something that distinguishes one from another. According to Baumeister (1986), identity rests on the concept of self that is shared by the person, other people and society. Two main defining criteria in identity are continuity and differentiation. One must be the same today and overtime, people change but they should retain some continuity of identity. Additionally, there should be things or characteristics that distinguish someone from other people. Anything that furnishes continuity and differentiation helps to define identity. The article explores how the secondary school curriculum in Zambia facilitates the identity of the youths. Behavioural differences between sexes increase with age because children's intellectual biases are being exaggerated by our gendered culture. Children do not inherit intellectual differences they learn them. They are a result of what a boy or girl is expected to be.

The results of the research is that a considerable amount of schools has had been recording quite a number school dropout of which the majority are girls. Among other reasons, teenage pregnancies and early marriages have been cited as the main dropout causes in Kasama.

Among other reasons, teenage pregnancies and early marriages have been cited as the main dropout causes in Kasama. This implies that, myths and practices during initiation ceremonies affect the girl's education positively and negatively. Th e positive effects such as building of good morals, taking care of oneself, working hard as a girl among others, if they are accurately acquired and implemented by the initiates, then Zambia as a country will develop as people will be skill full, vigilant and knowledgea ble.
