Over the course of the 18 th century, France experienced the unfolding of pathetically sad developments and unprecedented public outcry. The prime cause of this was indeed the abuse of people by the existing system of government, the practices of what came to be called the ancient regime. Therefore, the aim of essay is to explain the argument on how the socioeconomic and political contractions of the ancient regime led to the French revolution in 1789. Thereafter, a comprehensive conclusion will be drawn. The first aspect to be discussed is inequality and social strife over the course of the second half of the 18th century was one such terribly pressing concern in the French society.1 The French society was divided into three distinct classes notably the first, second and third estate. The first and second estates were the most privileged classes whereas the third estate was the most oppressed. The first and second classes ordinarily enjoyed state privileges including exemption from taxation, royal power, land tenure, rents and income. The majority of these people did not work directly to contribute to the economy but waited anxiously to consume its fruits. However, the living conditions under which the third estate (French Peasantry) lived were severely appalling, the estate constituted the poorest and largest, about 97% of the total population but was weightily burdened by heavy taxation which was levied so unfairly and took most of their hard earned income.2 The other socioeconomic reason that brought about the French revolution is Famines in France. The economic and financial problems of France were compounded by a great scarcity of food in the 1780s.3 Crop failure in the 1780s caused these shortages, which led to a steep increase in the price of the bread. The bread crisis was one of the chief causes that led to the mob of Paris to initiate the Revolution of 1789. The poor conditions in the countryside had forced the rural population to move into Paris and the city was overcrowded and filled with hungry and disaffected masses of people. More so, injustice and lawlessness of the ancient regime was the other reason that led to the French revolution.4 The administration of justice under Louis XVI was arbitrary and massively politicized. The ancient regime practiced a system that was known as the "lettre de catche" (sealed letter) in which people were arrested without trial on issue of a royal writ or notice from King. King Louis XVI deliberately used it to silence any critic of the government or enemy of the nobility and clergy classes. [1]
