Despite a substantial body of work on the pathologically alterations of the ChP, there is lack of data concerning the naturally occurring morphological changes asso-ciated with ageing. In this study, we investigated 30 human ChP tissue samples that were divided into 3 groups according to age. Morphometric analysis of psammoma bodies (PBs) on hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained samples and immunohistochemical analysis of ChP were performed (using antibodies to transmembrane phosphoglycoprotein protein CD34 and nuclear protein Ki-67). Amyloid deposits were detected using Congo red staining. Middle-aged and older individuals exhibited a significantly higher numerical density (ndPB) mostly as increased immature forms, which led us to question the proposed nomenclature. The proliferation rate of the ChP epithelium did not show significant difference between groups. Th...

Lipoma is a benign tumor of adipose tissue, the most common tumor of the human body soft tissues. As such, it can be found almost anywhere in the human body including the gastrointestinal system (incidence below 0.5%), but rarely in the sigmoid colon. Case report. This is a case report on symptomatic polyp of the sigmoid colon, which after one year, at control colonoscopy, caused suspicion to malignancy. Endoscopically diagnosed polipoid lesion was laparoscopically removed. The pathohistological diagnosis determined benign, submucosal, incapsulated lipoma of the sigmoid colon. Conclusion. Although lipomas of the gastrointestinal tract are rare, this case clearly indicates that we should not prematurely and without histological confirmation of malignancy do more extensive resection for a suspected malignancy.

Prostate carcinoma (PCa) and its parent organ are influenced by hormones, which is used for therapeutic purposes. Through androgen receptors (AR) androgens influence cell growth and function, proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, lipid metabolism and secretory activity of the prostate, as well as development and progression of PCa. An antiandrogen therapy is carried out in patients with metastatic PCa, in order to block effects of androgens. By conducting immunohistochemical analysis of androgen receptors in the PCa tissue, we can assume how the tumour will react to an administered antiandrogen therapy, both in androgen-positive and androgen-negative, resistant tumours. Knowledge of the presence of AR in the tumour tissue may serve as a prognostic indicator in histopathological analysis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of AR in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and in those with PCa, before therapy. Methods. Immunohistochemica...

It is known that melanoma frequently progresses to metastatic disease. The aim of this report is to emphasise the metastatic potential of cutaneous melanoma to various body areas, as well as the ability to produce unexpected presentation of the disease. A 48-year female had a myomatous uterus and underwent hysterectomy. At the pathological examination, multiple leiomyomas were diagnosed and in one of them, the metastatic melanoma was found, the later confirmed with immunohistochemical analysis. The medical history revealed that the patient was previously operated two years back due to skin superficial spreading melanoma. The metastasis to uterine leiomyoma was the first site of distant spread. Melanoma is a type of tumour with aggressive and unpredictable behaviour, so metastases to unexpected localisations could occur. A careful examination of patient's body is mandatory, including the remote areas and even benign tumours.

All recurrences were histologically well-differentiated. The first of them was in the region of m. Rectus abdominis and m. psoas, and was totally removed. The location of the last 2 recurrences occured approximately at the same site, and, after surgical removal, the patient received 4 cycles of paclitaxel and adjuvant irradiation to the lateral pelvic wall (external beam-Linac X 6 MV) in order to possibly prolong the disease-free interval. The patient is in good general condition with no evidence of disease 36 months following primary surgery.

Rare tumors of this region are vascular ones, particularly capillary and/or cavernous hemangiomas. Cervical hemangiomas are especially rare, usually asymptomatic and only one third of the cases is clinically manifested as vaginal bleeding, polyps, etc. Case report. We reported a 54-year-old postmenopausal female patient who had undergone conization due to high-grade squamous intra-epithelial lesion (H-SIL). Microscopic analysis of slices confirmed the existence of dysplastic changes in the endocervical epithelium and in small part in the epithelium of the gland of H-SIL type. In 2 of 15 slices, within the walls of the cervix, dilated, amplified and abnormal blood vessels lined with endothelium were observed, vaguely limited by the surrounding connective tissue of lamina propria and smooth muscle wall of the cervix. According to the pathological characteristics, the change corresponded to th...

Research paper thumbnail of Xanthomas of the stomach: a report of two cases

Bosnian journal of basic medical sciences / Udruženje basičnih mediciniskih znanosti = Association of Basic Medical Sciences, 2012

The histologic appearance of xanthomas can resemble certain malignant lesions. After retrospective data base search, we have encountered only 2 cases of xanthomas, both in the antral part of the stomach. Lamina propria of the mucosa contained rare, chronic inflammatory infiltrate and clusters of oval and polygonal cells with abundant, foamy cytoplasm. The cytoplasm of described cells did not show the presence of mucin (Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Alcian blue staining). The cells showed distinct cytoplasmic CD68 positivity and CKMNF116 negativity, which confirmed the diagnosis of xanthoma. Given the frequent association of xanthomas and known precancerous lesions of gastric mucosa, and occasional coexistence of malignant change, we need to pay attention to its diagnosis, and it is advisable to use both histochemical and immunohi...

The active phase is followed by atrophy of the large intestinal mucosa. Although its evaluation is sometimes difficult, quantification of ceratin mucosal parameters can be used as an accessory method. The aim of the study was to determine the parameters of linear micrometry in order to estimate the regeneration of the large intestinal mucosa in ulcerative colitis, and to evaluate the efficiacy of this method in everyday work. The measurements were performed on routine bioptic samples after qualitative histologic analysis and determination of the type and stage of the disease. The measurements were carried out to determine: the number of crypts per unit length, the height of crypt epithelium, diameter of crypts, their lumen and interstices; also, the quotient between the diameters of crypts and interstices was calculated. The analysis of the measured parameter...

Usually unilateral, it is, by definition, composed of well-differentiated derivates which originate from all three layers. It is most frequently diagnosed in the female reproductive period; in its pure form, it is generally benign, but occasionally it may undergo malignant transformation in one of its elements. The authors report a case of a 43-year-old woman who underwent a thyroid regulation substitutive therapy 12 years after thyroidectomy which had been performed because of Basedow's disease. On the occasion of her fourth delivery by cesarean section, bilateral cystical formations in both ovaries were found. Upon ending the delivery, the right ovary with the cyst was surgically removed, as well as part of the cystically changed left ovary. The pathohistological analysis of the samples taken from the left ovary cyst pointed to the following diagnos...

Research paper thumbnail of Intestinal alkaline phosphatase activity as a molecular marker of enterotoxicity induced by single dose of 5-fluorouracil and protective role of orally administered glutamine

One of the critical limitations for the administration of the chemotherapy is the toxicity affecting normal tissue. The main target organs for 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) toxicity in humans and experimental animals are the gastrointestinal tract, bone marrow, and skin. The cytotoxic effects of antimetabolite chemotherapy are based on their role as substrates for the same transport processes and enzymes involved in anabolism and catabolism as the natural substrates. The main goal of our study was to analyze the dose-dependent antiproliferative effects of 5-FU on intestinal mucosa, enterotoxic potential of 5-FU in experimental animals and to test possible protective role of glutamine. Methods. In our study, we used Sprague Dawley rats. The control group of rats included 50 animals, while the groups where either 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) alone or 5-FU and glutamine were administered included 200 animals. All experimental animals were further stratified according to the experimental m...

Research paper thumbnail of Immature colonic ganglion cells as a cause of megacolon in infancy: case report

Paediatria Croatica, 2014

Immaturity of ganglion cells is a rare form of dysganglionosis that belongs to the group of dysmo... more Immaturity of ganglion cells is a rare form of dysganglionosis that belongs to the group of dysmorphic types, characterized by a normal or mildly decreased number of ganglion cells, with the cells and their nuclei being considerably smaller in size. The disorder usually manifests clinically early after birth with abdominal distension, vomiting, feeding intolerance, and delayed passing of meconium. Diagnostic evaluation may include radiological studies; however, biopsy of colonic mucosa with histochemical analysis is considered the most reliable method. Manometry is a reliable noninvasive diagnostic study to confi rm motility disorder. Treatment may be medical in mild cases and more commonly surgical due to complications of the disorder. We present a case of immature colonic ganglion cells as a cause of megacolon in infancy. In our case, medicamentous treatment was eff ective and led to normalization of bowel emptying and stool consistency. Considering that follow up rectosigmoidoscopy was refused by the patient' s parents, we were not able to compare the histopathologic fi ndings before and after the medicamentous treatment; however, the favorable clinical course made us assume that the ganglion cells had probably fully matured.

Cystadenofibromas are tumors of the ovary which originate from the surface coelomic epithelium. Benign mucinous cystadenofibroma is a very rare form of these tumors, which consists of dominant stromal component of the connective tissue and one or more cysts. Case report. The case of a 62-year-old female with tumor of right ovary is reported in this paper. Histologically, tumor of the ovary had multilocular cystic formation, lined by a single-layer of mucoproductive cylindrical epithelium - endocervical type. In one area of tumor, the stromal component was abundant and made from partially hyalinised dense connective tissue. Mucinous cystadenofibroma was diagnosed on the basis of histological examination. Since the mucinous type of cystadenofibroma or adenofibroma is rare, this case has been chosen to be presented. Conclusion. Mucinous cystadenofibromas are differentially- diagnostically very similar to different malignant tumors and it is extremely important to make cor...

The intensity of disease and histopathological changes grow throughout the life. According to the literature, pathological changes characteristic of cystic fibrosis become noticeable around the sixth month of life. Case Report. After amniocentesis of a 5-lunar month-old fetus had been done, which confirmed cystic fibrosis, the Ethics Commission approved the preterm labor. The autopsy and histopathological analysis demonstrated the existence of typical histopathological changes in the pancreas and intestines. Discussion. In the late fetal period or during the period around the delivery, cystic fibrosis is usually manifested as meconial cap with or without obstruction of the intestinal lumen. Morphological changes in the exocrine glands usually develop only after birth. In this case, the existence of meconial obstruction, as well as the typical acidofil content in the secretory ducts and acini of the panc...

Our aim was reviewing the influence of chronically ingested saccharin on the function and histological structure of liver and pancreas and all this in light of gender differences. The rats were divided into control group - (Group C) and saccharin-treated group - (Group S) which was given a normal diet and 0.0005% saccharin in drinking water for 6 weeks. Liver and pancreas were histologically processed and quantitative histological analysis was performed. Glucose blood levels and plasma activities of aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT), body weight, and food intake were analyzed. Quantitative histological analysis determined that the values of diameter and volume density of both Langerhans islets and exocrine acini were significantly higher in S group, especially in males. AST levels were significantly higher in treated group. Glucose levels were higher in treated group, mainly due to the values of the ...

Research paper thumbnail of Xanthomas of the stomach: a report of two cases
