To operate in dynamic and complex environments efficiently demands an optimal path planning where multiple factors should be taken into account. In this paper, the multi-objective path planning problem of USV is formulated aiming to minimize the traveled distance maximizing in parallel the trajectory smoothness and energy efficiency. To address this multi-objective path planning problem with contradicting terms, the popular Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm is employed enhanced with the proposed Fuzzy Pareto framework. In particular, ACO is used to solve the problem by finding the Pareto solutions optimizing each single objective. Then these solutions are evaluated via the Mamdani fuzzy inference system to identify the optimal one. The ranking of the solutions is based on the defuzzification values. A case study is performed in a simulation area based ...

Within this context, the main rules of this energy market framework will consist of a proper combination of power purchase agreements along with contracts for difference in an attempt to obtain transactions that are mutually beneficial at least on a mid-term basis. The methodology, which is fully compatible with the electric energy market rules of the European Union, is enriched by a variety of alternative scenarios on the selling prices of electricity, showing that even when monthly or annual periods are used for reference, it is highly possible that all parties engaged have benefits.

This study aims to enhance the performance of ACO algorithm by integrating fuzzy logic in order to cope with the multiple contradicting objectives and generate quality solutions by in parallel identifying the mission areas of each USV to reach the desired targets. The objectives that are taken into account are the minimization of traveled distance and energy consumption, and the maximization of path smoothness. A comparative evaluation is conducted among ACO and fuzzy inference systems, Mamdani (ACO-M) and Takagi–Sugeno–Kang (ACO-TSK). The results showed that depending on the needs of the application, each methodology can contribute respectively. ACO-M generates better paths but ACO-TSK presents higher computation efficiency.

Research paper thumbnail of A Reference Architecture for Cloud–Edge Meta-Operating Systems Enabling Cross-Domain, Data-Intensive, ML-Assisted Applications: Architectural Overview and Key Concepts

Sensors

Future data-intensive intelligent applications are required to traverse across the cloud-to-edge-... more Future data-intensive intelligent applications are required to traverse across the cloud-to-edge-to-IoT continuum, where cloud and edge resources elegantly coordinate, alongside sensor networks and data. However, current technical solutions can only partially handle the data outburst associated with the IoT proliferation experienced in recent years, mainly due to their hierarchical architectures. In this context, this paper presents a reference architecture of a meta-operating system (RAMOS), targeted to enable a dynamic, distributed and trusted continuum which will be capable of facilitating the next-generation smart applications at the edge. RAMOS is domain-agnostic, capable of supporting heterogeneous devices in various network environments. Furthermore, the proposed architecture possesses the ability to place the data at the origin in a secure and trusted manner. Based on a layered structure, the building blocks of RAMOS are thoroughly described, and the interconnection and coor...

They offer a penetrating understanding as to the rudiments of economic activity, within a region. There has been a substantial drive in recent years, to research and support the cluster concept, though this process is far from delivering an understanding without caveats and restrictions. Clusters can provide valuable insight within industries, as they pertain to eventualities that harbour collective health, for many organizations. This instance summates the basic strength, but also, the elementary weakness of the concept. At the same time, caution should be applied, as the construct is not straightforward, and is many times left to selective interpretation. This chapter aims at investigating the complementarities of strategic planning of short sea shipping within a maritime cluster perspective.
