Condition monitoring is of increasing interest within network rail as a suitable method for increasing asset reliability and improving the PPI metric. As condition monitoring methods are identified each will need assessment to establish the cost and benefit. Benefit can be measured in cost savings as poor PPI performance results in fines. Within many industries Net Present Value (NPV) calculations are used to determine how quickly investments will break-even. Cost-risk is a term that is used to describe the financial impact of an unexpected event (a risk). This paper outlines a more detailed approach to calculating NPV which considers the cost-risk effect of changes of the denial of service charging rate. NPV prediction is of importance when assessing when to deploy different fault detection strategies to maintenance issues, and therefore the cost-risk of the NPV calculation should be used to support asset management decisions.

International Conference on Concurrent Engineering, held at the TU Delft, The Netherlands, July 20–23th, 2015. This is the second issue of the newly introduced series “Advances in Transdisciplinary Engineering” which publishes the proceedings of the CE conference series. The CE conference series is organized annually by the International Society of Productivity Enhancement (ISPE, Inc.) and constitutes an important forum for international scientific exchange on concurrent engineering and collaborative enterprises. These international conferences attract a significant number of researchers, industry experts and students, as well as government representatives, who are interested in the recent advances in concurrent engineering research, advancements and applications. Developed in the 80’s, the CE approach is based on the concept that different phases of a product lifecycle should be conducted con...

Likewise, program management and benefits management practices are claimed to have impacts on the benefits realization and the organization satisfaction. This research utilizes interpretive research, using interviews and online focus group, in identifying which benefits management practices are valid and which are not (and why) in the UK, Denmark, Australia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. Positive research, using two questionnaires with 52 and 28 responses, is used to examine the propositions of whether benefits management and project management practices have an influence on business benefits, whether project management practices are not critical for benefits management, and whether program management is the proper governance way to realize IS business success. This research found that there is a weak relationship between using benef...

Aim: To develop/identify and validate through application a methodology for Value Stream Mapping and Analysis of Engineering processes. Objectives • To develop a structured approach that enables the capturing of value stream map data • Map and analyse engineering processes to identify value and non-value adding activities • To validate the proposed future maps • To develop a road map for PDVSM implementation

Sponsor Company is continually improving their Product Introduction system. As a part of an ongoing investigation to develop prototyping (pre-production) capability, they need to understand good practice approaches in prototype part manufacture across a range of industries. Prototyping stage is a very important phase of new product development, where many decisions need to be taken to get high quality, zero defect products at the right time with lowest cost. Therefore, any value added improvements or good practices in the prototyping stage will support the company in the long term. The main aim of this research is to benchmark the good practices in prototype part manufacture to support early stages of product introduction. The aim was achieved with the use of a set of objectives i.e. develop an overview of re...

VSM is a technique from Lean thinking used to analyse the flow of materials and information to eliminate waste and identify/add value. Unlike production and assembly, there is currently no globally accepted VSM methodology for product and process development. The proposed methodology was applied and validated within different aerospace engineering processes at Rolls-Royce Plc. The 'as-is' & 'to-be' value stream maps created demonstrated benefits of the methodology, which is contributing to the continuous effort in implementing lean thinking in product design/development. 1 INTRODUCTION In today's rapidly changing and competitive market, product development is becoming increasingly important in the way organisations' work is structured (Harris et al. 2006). There are strong arguments that product development will become the dominant ind...

The use of knowledge based engineering (KBE) technologies has played a major role in automating routine design activities in view of supporting the cost-effective and timely development of a product. However, technologies employed within KBE systems are usually platform-specific. The nature of these platform-specific models has significantly limited knowledge abstraction and reusability in KBE systems. This research paper presents a novel approach that illustrates the use of platform-independent knowledge models for the development of KBE systems in the aerospace industry. The use of semantic technologies through the definition of generic-purposed ontologies has been employed to support the notion of independent knowledge models that strengthens knowledge reusability in KBE systems. This approach has been validated qualitatively through experts' opinion and its benefit realise...

The aim of this approach is to strengthen the modularity and reuse of engineering design ontologies to support knowledge management initiatives within the aerospace industry. Successful development and effective utilisation of engineering ontologies strongly depends on the method/framework used to develop them. Ensuring modularity in ontology design is essential for engineering design activities due to the complexity of knowledge that is required to be brought together to support the product design decision-making process. The proposed approach adopts best practices from previous ontology development methods, but focuses on encouraging modular architectural ontology design. The framework is comprised of three phases namely: (1) Ontology design and development; (2) Ontology validation and (3) Implementation of ontology structure. A qualitative research methodology is employed w...

The aim of the KBE framework is to strengthen the structure, reuse and portability of knowledge consumed within KBE systems in view of supporting the cost-effective and long-term preservation of knowledge within such systems. The proposed KBE framework uses an ontology-based approach for semantic knowledge management and adopts a model-driven architecture style from the software engineering discipline. Its phases are mainly (1) Capture knowledge required for KBE system; (2) Ontology model construct of KBE system; (3) Platform-independent model (PIM) technology selection and implementation and (4) Integration of PIM KBE knowledge with computer-aided design system. A rigorous methodology is employed which is comprised of five qualitative phases namely, requirement analysis for the KBE fr...

The current NASA concept for long-range civil aircraft is the Blended-Wing Body (BWB) aircraft, coupled with turbo-electric distributed propulsion (TeDP), to enable a host of efficiency benefits over current designs. NASA has identified superconducting technology as a key enabler to deliver this airframe. Superconductors need to be cooled to cryogenic temperatures for normal operation. Using a sensitivity matrix, it was found that the Exchange Heat and Transport/Pump Cryogen functions are the most sensitive to input variation. The failure modes and effects analysis performed on the functional model show that the detection functions are critical during component failure. Quality Function Deployment (QFD) analysis shows the Exchange Heat and Transport/Pump...
