The ambition has resulted in India's external engagement, abandoning the posturing of non-alignment for a more proactive multi-alignment strategy. Its efforts to engage with major powers such as the US and China, as well as other global middle powers such as Japan, the UK, and Australia, have been positioned on rapid economic progress, enabled by one of the fastest rates of growth among major economies. Attempts to expand global strategic influence, a natural outcome of robust economic expansion, should have seen India pursuing an aggressive outward-oriented external trade policy for increasing its share in global trade. India, though, has shown a marked resistance to open trade, including being reluctant to engage in regional and bilateral trade negotiations. This paper examines the dichotomy be...

FDI also offers these economies access to advanced technology and global marketing networks. Similarly, foreign firms investing in developing country markets look for some conditions to be met in host countries, which allow them to produce more efficiently through better exploitation of their typical intangible assets, like superior patented technology, management and marketing skills (Lall and Streeten, 1977; Soci,2002). Otherwise, foreign firms have the option of serving new markets through either exports or arm’s-length arrangements like licensing. Of course, success in capturing new markets through exports depends heavily on barriers to trade, while licensing, particularly in products involving advanced know-how, needs to overcome critical problems arising from informational asymmetry between foreign sellers and local franchisees. Nevertheless, foreign firms comm...

The number of suicides committed on economic grounds has more than doubled between 1991 and 2009. This paper studies the pattern of suicides in 10 states reporting highest suicides for the year 2009 and analyses the economic factors behind these suicides. The paper finds that bankruptcy or sharp changes in economic status, along with poverty, are major factors driving suicides in India’s relatively prosperous states, while property disputes, career problems and unemployment are doing so in the relatively poorer states. The paper argues that economic prosperity in India has not necessarily resulted in economic security. Suicides on economic grounds might increase unless India is able to develop effective social security mechanisms for tackling economic hardships.

Building SEZs requires large tracts of contiguous unoccupied land, which states in India are procuring for private developers by employing the LAA of 1894. The LAA has been used by the Central and state Governments for decades for procuring private land. This century old instrument of eminent domain became the subject of intense controversy as acquisition of land for building SEZs generated widespread protests (Palit and Bhattacharjee, 2008) and occasional bloody conflicts between state agencies and disgruntled landowners3.
