This paper gives a basic idea about conservation of wildlife and specifically states need, polici... more This paper gives a basic idea about conservation of wildlife and specifically states need, policies and law relating to preservation of Tigers in India. The national animal of India, is a rich-shaded all around striped animal.Tigers being one of the biggest members of the cat family are one of the dominant indicators of a healthy ecosystem. Their survival is in proportion to a good environment. After independence the first step taken towards conservation of wildlife was by being a signatory of the various conventions like CITES 1973, Stockholm Convention 1972, Convention on Biological Diversity 1992, Global Tiger Forum 1994.
Some of these conventions dealing specially in tigers. There are also Constitutional Provisions relating to conservation of wildlife such as Article 48-A; Article 51-A(g). Politics has also played a vital role in preservation of tigers as our Iron lady took initiative steps towards saving habitat for tigers, ban on hunting and animal trade. Also in 1972 wildlife protection Act was introduced in the parliament and in 1973 Project Tiger was initiated. In the Wildlife Protection Act tiger is covered under scheduled animals and so is part of special care and protection. This paper also discusses a very important case on wildlife trade and hunting.
