Forest Defense Party in NYC Victoria’s Secret Victoryand Birthday Partyfor Wetlands Activism Collective On Saturday, March 24, at 7:30 PM, Wetlands Activism Collective, in conjunction with Times Up!, will hold a party to commemorate Victoria’s Secret’s recent commitment to phase out the use of paper pulp from endangered forests and increase use of recycled paper in its catalogs and to announce an upcoming National Day of Protest, April 21, targetting catalog companies that have yet to institute significant reforms. Victoria’s Secret’s announcement comes at the heels of 2 years of protests, street theater, and civil disobedience by Wetlands Activism Collective, ForestEthics, and other environmental groups. The party will also commemorate Wetlands Activism Collective’s 18th birthday. Founded as the social justice and environmental arm of the late, lamented Wetlands Preserve nightclub, Wetlands Activism Collective has devoted almost two decades to successful advocacy campaigns on issues like forest defense, anti-consumerism, animal rights, anti-globalization, indigenous people’s rights, resource waste, and labor rights. The party will feature music with DJ Thadeaus and surprise guests, free food (prepared by Freegan.info; a project of Wetlands Activism Collective); a freegan fashion show; updates on forest defense campaigns featuring activists from Wetlands Activism Collective, Rainforest Relief, and ForestEthics, environmental films; and slideshows of exciting images from forest defense protests and direct actions. No RSVP is required. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. The party will be held at Times Up! environmental space at 49 East Houston Street between Mott and Mulberry. Take the B, D, F, or V to Broadway-Lafayette, 6 to Bleeker Street, or the N/R to Prince Street. i need new shoes that are suitable for work- i hate wearing dress shoes and the dressiest thing i can deal with is mary jane type shoes. ive been looking all around for a pair that are man made. all of the vegan shoes i have found online are so expensive, does anyone know where i can find some cheap man made shoes that are comfortable and good for walking in nyc (i need something flat but with a good sole). help me!! neck ties I'm starting a new job where I'll need to wear a tie. I have a few silk ties from my pre-vegan days, but they're largely out of fashion, and I want to make a good first impression. Cloth ties don't do it for me--or at least not the ones I've seen for sale. I was thinking that I could both look good and avoid supporting worm harvests if I bought some used neckties.Does anybody know of a good men's consignment shop in the city?Thanks! question for everyone when you go out to a restaurant that doesnt have vegan items specifically labeled how do you ensure that you are getting vegan food?i find this particularlly difficult when getting asian, esspecially indian food.the other day i was ordering indian take out, and i read through the menu carefully stearing clear of any items that included cream sauce, etc. i order indian food a lot and havent run into trouble in the past, so i didnt think to ask the person i spoke to, although even if i had i cant be gauranteed that they would have been particularly helpful. and when my food arrived, it was most deffinetly not vegan...the sauce was cream based. luckily my boyfriend was here to eat it for me.how do you avoid this?and also...if you order something that seems vegan on the menu and it comes out and is not vegan (this has happened to me when i've ordered salads that come out with grated cheese on it, etc)...do you send it back? i never have the guts to do this. i just normally dont eat it.whats your take?-steff- (8 Comments |Comment on this) |

New Hey I am Jess. I am 23 and I live in Jersey. I've been vegetarian for 6 years now. It would've been 7 but I took a year off for personal reasons. I would love to become vegan. I've eliminated a lot of dairy from my diet...but I am a sucker for cheese. It's been hard getting back into eating healthy again from eating meat for a year. I'm Artemis, I live in Mamaroneck, NY, about 30 miles North of NYC, and I've been a vegetarian for (give or take) 2 years, and I'm not going back. I have a largely ironic factor in my life.. the sad thing is, my grandfather owns a cattle ranch in TX that raises meat cows, which means it will end up in my hands someday. It's immediately becoming a bunny farm (wild rabbits all over the place, they live and die naturally and undisturbed, I'm just keeping them away from the redneck fur hunters of that particular spot in Texas) when it's signed to me.That, and I'm straight edge (no drugs/alcohol, no casual sex) and... my mom and stepdad sell beer for a living. :-\Right now I'm in California with family friends, so I've been with and around many others of the same diet, which is a relief from Mamaroneck, where there's about... what... 2 vegetarians and some don't even know what the word MEANS?I'm on line fairly often, so if you want to talk about... um... whatever, my screenames are as followed:AIM= loyalxev (you're most likely to catch me here, but who knows)AIM= crazyxnorwegianYahoo= bimboonwheelsMSN= soljiazThanks ;)In good health,Artemis http://www.myspace.com/iconsgalorehttp://www.myspace.com/rude13Current Mood:  amused (2 Comments |Comment on this) |

Vegan BBQ Potluck in Prospect Park Hi! The Post Punk Kitchen in hosting a picnic thingy in Prospect Park this Saturday July 30th from noon till whenever.
