If you’re the type who would be happy snoozing on hardwood or resting on concrete, you probably already know you’d prefer a firm mattress. But even if you don’t naturally gravitate tofirm mattresses, they can be a great match for back and stomach sleepers, people with back pain, or anyone looking for some additional support. With that said, “firm” is a subjective term — so it’s helpful to think in terms of a scale. If “one” is as soft as down and “ten” is as hard as a rock, firm mattresses fall in the seven-to-ten range. They are generally mattresses that you lie “on top” of rather than “sink into” and that feel more rigid or unyielding than squishy or plush.

In this guide, I’ve rounded up the best firm mattresses the Strategist staff has tested, including all-foam, hybrid, and innerspring options. Our method involves having testers sleep on a mattress in their own homes for at least a week — but often much longer — and providing key details about each tester’s specific sleep preferences so you can find someone whose criteria are similar to yours. If you don’t find anything you like below, you should also check out our guide to the very best mattresses of all types, out of the 40-plus models we’ve tested to date.

It’s Sleep Better Week at the Strategist, and we’ve added a new pick for best firm hybrid mattress: the Avocado Green Extra Firm. We’ve also confirmed the pricing and availability for every firm mattress we recommend.

Broadly, the main three kinds of mattresses are all-foam, innerspring, and hybrid. All-foam mattresses, as the name suggests, are made entirely of foam. The category includes memory-foam mattresses, as well as mattresses made of other types of polyurethane foam or latex foam. Innerspring mattresses are made primarily of springs, typically with a small amount of padding over the coils. Until the 1990s (when memory-foam mattresses began to hit the market, to be followed by hybrids in the 2000s), innersprings were overwhelmingly common in the United States. But these days, they are less predominant, especially at online and direct-to-consumer brands, because they aren’t able to be compressed and shipped in a box. Hybrid mattresses, fittingly, are a mix of these two styles. They have coils as a base layer, usually with multiple layers of foam (polyurethane or latex) on top of the coils.

All three of these mattress types can be firm, and there are picks of each type on this list. If you’re looking to maximize support and durability, I’d recommend a mattress that has coils (either an innerspring or hybrid), since metal springs add a lot to the structure of a mattress that all-foam mattresses don’t have.

Obviously, all the mattresses included in this list fall into the “firm” category. Even within the “firm” designation, however, there is still some variation. Some of the firm mattresses in this guide are just a bit firmer than medium-firm (the most common and popular mattress firmness across all mattress types), while others are extremely firm (nine or ten on the one-to-ten scale I described above). In each review, we’ve included the tester’s sleep preferences and their personal description of what the mattress felt like to help you choose which firmness level might be right for you.

Additionally, some of the mattresses on this list come in multiple firmness options or have a flippable construction where one side of the mattress is firmer than the other. I’ve also noted this where relevant.

TL;DR: This mattress is good for just about anyone. Saatva’s combo of two types of springs, three firmness options, and a Euro top ensures excellent support and comfort. It comes in three firmness levels, the firmest of which will appeal the most to those who want a firm mattress with just a touch of cushioning. Why the Saatva Classic Mattress Is Our Long-Running Favorite

Who tested it: Me, Amelia Jerden, the Strategist’s sleep writer, and Simone Kitchens, Strategist deputy editor. I am a back and side sleeper who prefers a softer mattress and have tested over 50 mattresses in my career. Kitchens is a back-to-side sleeper who frequently deals with back pain. Kitchens also edits the Strategist’s bedding coverage and is our resident firm-mattress connoisseur.

Sturdy back support: When Kitchens tested the Saatva Classic mattress (first in Luxury Firm and later in Firm), she was on a quest to find a mattress to soothe her sore back. What she liked most was the support it offered, which she says prevented her lower back from collapsing in and kept her spine in alignment. When I retested the Saatva a few years later, I had a similar experience. This mattress is largely made of coils, so it isn’t especially sinky, and I felt very lifted up. Though there isn’t an entire foam layer, the Saatva does have zoned lumbar support — in this case, a strip of memory foam that runs horizontally across the middle of the mattress — which adds some lower-back cushioning to a firmer mattress.

Easy to change sleeping positions: The Saatva Classic is very easy to move around on. The coil-heavy construction means it won’t conform around you the way memory foam would, so you’ll feel more “on top” of it and you won’t get that sunken, stuck feeling.

Has a very firm option, as well as a slightly softer “luxury firm”: Because there are three firmness levels to choose from (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, or Firm), the Saatva Classic can work for just about everyone. If you’re looking for a firm mattress, the Firm model will naturally be your best bet. But as someone who typically prefers a softer mattress, I also found the Luxury Firm model to be fairly firm, so it could be a solid middle-ground option for those who want a firmer mattress that still has some give to it. (If you want to lie on all three firmnesses, Saatva does have showrooms in many major U.S. cities — I did this at its Charlotte location, and the firmness difference across the three models is definitely noticeable.) Both Kitchens and I really liked sleeping on the Saatva, even though we have different sleep styles and preferences.

Noticeable motion transfer: The bounciness from the coils can lead to more noticeable motion transfer than you’d feel on a mattress with thicker layers of foam.

Pillow top gives the bed a tufted top: Kitchens didn’t love the tufted top layer, as she prefers a smoother sleep surface.

Construction: The Saatva has three main layers — two layers of springs plus a Euro-top cover. The bottom layer is made of interlocking steel coils (typical for an innerspring mattress), and the middle layer features pocketed coils, which are individually wrapped in fabric and compress independently from one another. This double-stacked coil construction is what makes the Saatva both sturdy and bouncy. Wrapped around the perimeter of both coil sections is a border of high-density foam, which gives the mattress extremely strong edge support. An organic-cotton Euro top covers the coils, with a strip of memory foam under the center of the cover, to provide extra lumbar support. This construction — coils on coils with a touch of foam for the lower back — makes the Saatva one of our favorite mattresses for back pain, too.

Firmness and support: There are three firmness levels to choose from. The Luxury Firm is the middle option, closest to the versatile “medium-firm” feel that most people will find comfortable, but is still on the firmer side — I’d rate it as a seven out of ten for firmness. The Plush Soft offers slightly more cushioning that may be preferable for side sleepers or lighter-weight people (who won’t sink into their mattress as much), though I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for a firm mattress. The Firm will have the least sinkage and the most resistance, keeping you the most “on top” of the bed, and is probably the best choice for firm-mattress lovers.

Plank Firm Mattress - Queen

Mattress type: All foam | Firmness: Flippable with one firm side and one extra-firm side | Height: Nine inches | Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king, split California king, short full, short queen, Olympic queen, short king, RV king | Trial period: 120 days | Warranty: Lifetime | Shipping: Free shipping to 48 states

TL;DR: Plank says its mattresses are for people “who say a typical firm is never firm enough.” The Plank Firm is a flippable, all-foam mattress designed to reduce back pain. Brooklyn Bedding, Plank’s parent company, is based in Phoenix and constructs all its mattresses in-house at its factory.

Who tested it: Simone Kitchens, Strategist deputy editor and a back-to-side sleeper who frequently deals with back pain. Kitchens also edits the Strategist’s bedding coverage and is our resident firm-mattress connoisseur.

Truly firm (with two options to choose between): When first opened the Plank Firm and let it expand, she says it didn’t feel all that firm. But after sleeping on it for a while, she came to realize it was actually one of the firmest foam mattresses she’d ever lain down on. Though the Plank is double-sided (with a firm and extra-firm side), Kitchens stuck with the extra firm. “To be honest, I wasn’t even interested in trying the less firm side,” she says.

Not too rigid: This is not a rigid futon with no give, as firm-mattress-averse people might think. That initial squishiness Kitchens felt is actually part of the design and makes it appealing for people like her who roll from side to side — no compressed shoulders in the morning.

Excellent for back sleeping: Where this impressively firm mattress really shines is when you’re lying on your back. The foam doesn’t just fill in around the contours of your body, Kitchens says. Rather, it “puffs you up on top of it,” with your weight evenly dispersed. For Kitchens, the best way to describe it is “neutral spine” — similar to lying on the floor at the end of yoga class in Savasana, when the curvatures of your spine are all in alignment.

Foam sleeps warmer than coils: Kitchens found that this mattress slept warmer than other beds she has tested, due to the all-foam construction.

Construction: The Plank comes in three versions: Plank Firm, the “signature” memory-foam option; Plank Firm Luxe, a hybrid model with a six-inch core of individually encased coils; and Plank Firm Natural, with GOTS-certified organic cotton and Talalay latex. Each mattress incorporates a flippable design, so you can choose a firm or firmer side. The firmness of each version differs slightly, but in general, the Plank Firm that Kitchens tested is its firmest option. The Plank Firm, which is nine and a half inches tall, includes six inches of high-density base foam core.

Firmness and support: One side of the Plank Firm is considered “traditional firm,” while the other is “ultra firm.” Kitchens primarily tested the ultra-firm side.

Zinus Original Green Tea Memory-Foam Mattress - Queen

Mattress type: All foam | Firmness: Firm | Height: 12 inches | Sizes: Twin, full, queen, king | Trial period: 100 days | Warranty: 10 years | Shipping: Free to 48 states and Washington, D.C.

TL;DR: An ultra-affordable, firm all-foam mattress that will get the job done.

Who tested it: Me, Amelia Jerden, the Strategist’s sleep writer, who has tested over 50 mattresses in my career. I am a back and side sleeper who prefers a softer mattress.

Comfortably firm: As a fan of softer mattresses, this Zinus Original Green Tea mattress was not a great fit for me. However, my partner loved it; he even said he felt less neck pain and as if his spine were more neutrally aligned, after we switched to this bed. He is a textbook combination sleeper and reported feeling comfortable in all three main sleeping positions, including on his side.

Affordable: It’s not especially easy to find a decent queen-size mattress for under $500, making this a good choice for firm-mattress lovers on a budget.

Lower-quality construction: The materials of the Original Green Tea also feel a little cheap to me, so I suspect this bed may not be super-durable in the long run, but if you’re looking to save money, it’s a solid option.

Construction: The least expensive mattress Zinus offers, the Original Green Tea is ten inches tall and made of three layers of CertiPUR-U.S.-certified foams. According to the federal-law tag, the ratio is about 80 percent polyurethane foam (for the base) to 20 percent memory foam (for the comfort layer). Zinus says its foam is infused with green tea for use as an antioxidant to “maintain freshness.” The mattress is covered with a polyester-knit cover that Zinus says should not be removed and is not washable, though I did notice mine had a zipper on the bottom of the cover.

Firmness and support: Zinus advertises its Original Green Tea mattress as soft and pressure-relieving, but I disagree — I think it’s pretty firm, and the foam didn’t conform around my body very much. Compared to the brand’s Ultra Cooling Green Tea Hybrid, I’d rank it as a 7.5 on a firmness scale of one to ten where one is soft and ten is firm.

Avocado Green Extra Firm Mattress - Queen

Mattress type: Latex hybrid | Firmness: Extra firm | Height: 9.75 inches | Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king | Trial period: 365 days | Warranty: 25 years | Shipping: In-home-delivery-and-setup fee required, starting at $249

TL;DR: The Avocado Green Extra Firm isn’t just the firmest mattress Avocado makes — it’s also the firmest mattress we’ve ever tested. It’s a latex hybrid that will provide plenty of sturdy, spine-straightening support to anyone who considers themself a true firm-mattress freak, and it’s designed to be supportive for plus-size sleepers, too.

Who tested it: Simone Kitchens, Strategist deputy editor and a back-to-side sleeper, who frequently deals with back pain. Kitchens also edits the Strategist’s bedding coverage and is our resident firm-mattress connoisseur.

Firmest mattress we’ve tested: Kitchens has slept on some of the firmest mattresses out there — including many in this story — and proclaimedthis one the firmest of all. “In the six months I’ve been testing it, there’s been the most minimal of settling, but no impressions or sagging, something I usually feel around the one-month mark with memory foam,” she says.If you’re looking for the firmest of the firm, this mattress is the one for you. But the organic-cotton cover still offers supportive comfort.

Works for different body types and needs: The Avocado Green Extra Firm mattress is marketed toward a variety of sleepers: plus-size people, athletes looking for proper spinal alignment, people with achy backs. A very firm and supportive mattress can benefit people in all those groups, and Kitchens, who has moderate hip dysplasia and says her back regularly feels out of whackfrom exercise, too much sitting, or traveling, says a night on this mattress reliably realigns her spine. It has zoned supportto keep your hips and shoulders level, preventing compression around the lower back.

Comfortable in multiple positions: Avocado says this mattress is best suited for back and stomach sleepers, who typically sleep more comfortably on firm beds, but Kitchens hasn’t experienced any shoulder pain when sleeping on her side. She notes, however, that she uses a firm latex pillow with a high loft that keeps her neck and shoulders from collapsing in when lying on her side.

Not overly bouncy: Though latex and coils are usually a recipe for bounce, Kitchens says this mattress doesn’t feel too bouncy, nor does motion transfer easily when two people are sharing the bed.

Heavy and not flexible: Because of its durable build and heavy materials like latex and steel coils, Kitchens says the mattress can be tricky to move. It is delivered fully expanded and isn’t bendy like othermattresses, so navigating staircases and tight corners could be difficult. For that reason, Avocado requires you to pay extra for in-home delivery and setup, which starts at $249.

Construction: The base of the Avocado Green Extra Firm contains two three-inch layers of heavy-gauge steel coils that are separated by coconut-fiber pads. Next is a two-inch layer of Dunlop latex, a particularly heavy and dense type of latex foam. The cover is made from organic cotton with a layer of organic wool underneath to add softness and act as a natural fire retardant.

The mattress also has a number of materials and manufacturing certifications. It’s made with Global Organic Latex Standard–certified latex and Global Organic Textile Standard–certified wool and cotton. It is alsoGreenguard Gold–certified for low emissions andOeko-Tex Standard 100–certified. (Learn more about those certifications here.)

Firmness and support: Kitchens says this mattress is the firmest she’s ever tried, and Avocado itself ranks it a ten out of ten for firmness. The double layer of heavy-gauge steel coils ensures plenty of support, including for heavier people and people with back pain.

Mattress type: Hybrid | Firmness: Medium or Extra-firm | Height: 12 inches | Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king | Trial period: No trial period, but an unopened mattress may be returned within 90 days of purchase | Warranty: 10 years | Shipping: Free U.S. shipping; old-mattress removal for an additional $105

TL;DR: The Brick is Allswell’s “extra-firm” option. It’s a hybrid mattress with memory foam and coils that make it firm and supportive, but not in a rigid way. At under $500 for a queen, it is a no-frills but not rock-hard option.

Who tested it: Simone Kitchens, Strategist deputy editor and a back-to-side sleeper who frequently deals with back pain. Kitchens also edits the Strategist’s bedding coverage and is our resident firm-mattress connoisseur.

Firm feel with some cushioning: Having spent months sleeping on Brooklyn Bedding’s Plank mattress, Kitchens kept it front of mind while testing the Brick. The two are technically different mattresses: The Plank is a pure memory-foam option, where the Brick is a hybrid with memory foam and springs. She says neither feels firm in a “slab of concrete” way, but there is some nuance in comparing these two. Kitchens found that the more cushioned top layers of the Brick make it feel like a “firm mattress in disguise” — and also do a great job tampering motion transfer from a partner. But because of its coils, the Brick has a lot more bounce and a bit more give than the Plank. You’re going to feel your knee sink in deeper when climbing onto the Brick, Kitchens says, but once you’ve settled into your sleep position, it starts to feel more comparable. The Brick is also not quite as firm as the Avocado Green Extra Firm mattress above, so it’s a good option for those who want a slightly less firm hybrid.

Contouring without sinking in: Since the Brick does incorporate memory foam, there is a slight contouring feeling, but Kitchens did not find it too “sinky.” And while it slightly softened after a few months, the mattress maintained a very supportive quality overall.

Affordable and versatile: While the Brick is categorized as firm because of its coils and support, the memory foam adds a universal appeal that Kitchens thinks many different types of sleepers would appreciate. That versatility, plus the affordable price point, makes it an especially good option for outfitting a guest room or Airbnb. “You should also consider this mattress instead of some other inexpensive soft memory-foam mattresses, which ultimately get too soft. Your guests will thank you,” Kitchens says.

Lower-quality construction: You’ll notice the low price in some of the materials — Kitchens noticed the quilted top panel felt a little cheap and that the edge support is not super-structured-feeling. However, she says these qualities don’t feel like too much of an issue when your bed is made and you’re lying in it (quite comfortably).

No trial period: This mattress also doesn’t have a trial period, so once you open the box, you can’t return it, which may be a sticking point for those who need the reassurance of being able to test at home.

Construction: The Brick is about 12 inches tall; eight inches of that is fabric-encased coils, which are topped with two inches of high-density medium-support memory foam and then one inch of copper-infused memory foam for cooling purposes. The final layer is 1.25 inches of quilted top panel. The mattress is made with CertiPUR-U.S.-certified memory foam.

Firmness and support: Allswell sometimes calls this mattress the Brick and other times refers to it as the extra-firm version of its Allswell Luxe mattress. Kitchens tested the extra-firm Brick, but the Luxe is slightly less firm, if you want a little more cushioning.

Parachute Eco Mattress - Queen

Mattress type: Innerspring | Firmness: Firm | Height: 12 inches | Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king | Trial period: 100 days | Warranty: 10 years | Shipping: Free shipping to 48 states; shipping not available to Alaska or Hawaii

TL;DR: The Parachute Eco Comfort is one of the only mattresses we’ve tested with absolutely no foam. It has a firm feel, thanks to the classic innerspring construction.

Who tested it: Margaret Rhodes, former Strategist senior editor and a stomach-to-side sleeper who likes a soft but supportive mattress.

Extra-firm feel: Parachute advertises this mattress as very firm, and Rhodes agreed after testing it. She ultimately ended up adding a mattress topper because it was a little too firm for her taste. But for those who love a truly firm feel, it may be just right.

Breathable construction: In the age of the foam mattress, Rhodes remarked that it’s easy to forget how breezy springs feel. Because the mattress is quite firm, her initial impression was one of “sleeping on a very sturdy topper floating on nothing”; she immediately noticed that her body heat was not being trapped beneath her.

All-natural materials: Rhodes says the fact that Parachute’s mattress uses 100 percent organic cotton and New Zealand wool brought her some welcome peace of mind. In fact, it’s one of the only mattresses we’ve ever tried with zero foam — either latex or polyurethane — in the construction. “It doesn’t smell like anything, meaning it has none of the plastic aroma that issues from a lot of other vacuum-packed mattresses,” Rhodes says. (That effect is called “off-gassing,” and it’s not harmful, just unpleasant.)

High price tag: The Parachute Eco is the most expensive mattress on this list, and it recently increased in price (from 2,400to2,400 to 2,400to2,650). While it is excellent quality, it’s definitely an investment.

Construction: This mattress is spiritually modeled after a Hästens model that, years ago, Parachute founder Ariel Kaye saved up to buy. “I’m not saying we use horsehair or the same construction, but the idea was always to have a heritage mattress,” Kaye says. That’s why Parachute uses only springs and zero foam, which is more prone to losing its shape and breaking down. There are two levels of coils sandwiched between wool and covered in quilted, organic cotton.

Firmness and support: This is a firm mattress, one that Parachute says is firmer than most hybrid mattresses but softer than traditional innerspring mattresses.
