Many years ago, my aunt, a longtime New Yorker, left her Zojirushi water bottle at the Central Synagogue. When she left it there on Monday, it had freshly made iced coffee inside. When she retrieved it on Friday, she was shocked to see that not only was it cold, but the ice cube was still floating around. Her description of that ice cube had me sold, so I immediately ordered my own. I have a real tendency toward losing things, so I chose orange as my Zojirushi color because it stands out.

When I was asking around to friends, “What are my favorite things?,” everyone said peperoncini. I eat at least a third of a jar a day. On sets, a lot of the budget for craft goes to buying these ’cause I’d eat so many of them with lunch. Sometimes I’ll go into a deli and get some of the fresh ones there, but this is my go-to brand.
A couple of years ago, my little brother Marcus told me he had actually been the original peperoncini lover. In sixth grade, he was home sick with a fever watching Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island,and the characters were all in a mansion eating hot peppers. He asked my mom if she could get some for him. I think it started with sliced cherry peppers in a jar, and then that led to peperoncini, but we became pepper siblings.

This was straight-up research. It’s obviously a frustrating time to be trying to eat well and clean, so I did some research about clean protein powders, and this is the one that everyone recommended. I was looking for ingredients that aren’t a novel, like, “How simple can we make this?”
There is not a morning that goes by when I pour my protein powder into a blender that I don’t think of my grandma. Despite being a vegetarian since I was 16, she has really never accepted it. Every phone call with her ends with, “Eat protein!” I think she does not accept that there are other ways to get protein besides eating fish and meat. But she is turning 96 this June, so she might be onto something.

When I first moved to Los Angeles from New York almost four years ago now, I was determined to stay a walker. My mom got these for me back when my parents still owned my childhood home in New Jersey. She is an incredible bargain hunter. Years ago, an ex of mine was horrified that I wasn’t really a sunscreen person, but it was because I was getting adult acne from heavy sunscreen and it would always irritate my skin.
