I used to always wear a huge cotton T-shirt to bed, but then I started working at the Strategist and was introduced to Eberjey. We’ve written a lot about the brand’s buttery-soft pajama sets, and the modal “shortie” set even holds the highest honor as our Best in Class pajamas. Over the years, I’ve amassed a collection from the brand’s Gisele collection — made up of button-down pajamas with contrasting piping including my most-worn short-sleeve with pants set, the long-sleeve with pants, and the cheekier cami-shorts combo. They’ve been my pajamas of choice for some time now, and I’ve even turned my fiancé and other family members into Eberjey believers, too.

But then Lake came on my radar. Some of my colleagues have been wearing the Savannah, Georgia–based pajama brand for years, but recently I’ve noticed the sleepwear company getting more attention after the launch of its first collection of everyday clothing, including striped shirtdresses and breezy 100 percent cotton short sets. I’ve also noticed it popping up both in my personal life — a few expectant moms I know swear by the Kimono maternity sets — and online, with mentions on r/moderatelygranolamoms and try-on hauls all over my FYP.

I was curious to try Lake, so I tested out the DreamModal Daydream Pants Set — and I have to say, I’m impressed. As much as I love Eberjey, Lake’s DreamModal pajamas now rival my favorites. They’re just as soft and have an airy silhouette that will be ideal come summer. Lake is actually better known for its pima pajamas, but the DreamModal stood out to me because they’re soft without being overly slinky. I’m not the only one who likes the DreamModal: Going purely off hand feel, our writer Bella Druckman even prefers Lake’s DreamModal to Eberjey’s Gisele pajamas. “While they’re both decidedly buttery, Eberjey’s Tencel feels slightly more rough on my skin,” Druckman told me. “I wouldn’t call Eberjey’s pajamas rough by any means, but they’re not quite as soft as Lake’s DreamModal pajamas, which are so lightweight and smooth that I forget I’m wearing them.”

I appreciate that Lake’s DreamModal is thicker than the material of the Eberjeys but still plenty breathable (which is saying a lot coming from someone with Hashimoto’s disease who has night sweats every now and again). I also appreciate the Lake’s wider waistband — I never wake up at 3 a.m. with my pants twisted to one side, as I sometimes have because of Eberjey’s thin elastic one. The cheerful stripes make me feel like I should be sipping my morning coffee in a coastal New England B&B. The wide straps are super-comfortable and the billowy nature of the tank top prevents me from overheating. And while I haven’t owned the Lake PJs for long enough to know if they’ll pill (sadly, my oldest Eberjey ones have pilled significantly even despite regular air-drying), the quality of the knit makes me optimistic that these will hold up beyond next spring.

I also tried a few of the new daytime pieces, including the Field Short Set, which includes a boatneck top and shorts in a hazelnut-and-ivory-striped print, both made from 100 percent cotton. The set has a great weight — not too lightweight or too heavy. It worked perfectly when I wore it on a balmy spring afternoon in San Francisco with sneakers and another time when I wore it with sandals to lunch with friends. What I love most about the set is that it scratches my itch for sporty prep style without overdoing it.
