The same, however, cannot be said about a dictionary of statistics and research methods because they are their own disciplines, they have a small degree of overlap with psychology, and they already have their own dictionaries (I’ll use the term statistics to refer to both statistics and research methods). However, given that all psychologists are supposed to have some familiarity with statistics (even if it is only repressed memories), one could argue that a dictionary of the statistics that psychologists use is justified. As the preface reports, the editorial team started out with 8,000 terms (headwords) from the APA Dictionary of Psychology, articles from the APA journal Psychological Methods, and other unspecified sources to form a list of 4,080 headwords. I do not mean to disparage the efforts of the editor ...

Eight English-French bilingual adults wete p7(sented pairs of letter strings and had to decide whether both strings were words. Ralf cf the trials contained English-French word pairs which required a "yes" response. Of these, half were translation pairs and half were semantically unrelated English-French word pairs. Reaction times for the translation pairs were found to be significantly faster than those of the semantically unrelated word pairs. When this result is compared against a similar monolingual lexical decision task, it is found that the magnitude of this semantic facilitation effect is much larger, both in absolute time reduction and in the proportion of variance accounted for by the manipulation. The presence of this semantic facilitation effect indicates that the meanings of words from different languages are craanized in a common area of bilingual semantic memory. (Author) *

A questionnaire survey of students at New York University revealed that 39 languages were represented and only 10% of the students indicated they were English monolinguals. Comparisons were made among students by subdividing them on the basis of (a) monolingual background, (b) age of acquisition of English, and (c) dominant language (English or another language). These groupings were then used to evaluate differences on Scholastic Aptitude Test measures, ratings of language ability, and ratings of reading patterns. Analyses indicate that bilingualism is a Jess important factor in differentiating subjects on language background than the age at which English is acquired, with the later acquisition of English having the greatest impact. Implications of these findings for subject selection for experiments in memory and cognition are discussed. Twenty-five tables and seven figures are included, and the study instrument is appended.
