About us
Reconnecting Northland’s vision is that in three generations Northland is a flourishing tapestry of abundant and resilient ecosystems. As New Zealand’s only connectivity conservation programme, we act as a catalyst to connect community vision to practice. Connecting communities with the resources and services to achieve their ecological aspirations across Tai Tokerau. Connectivity conservation is a concept that recognises that habitats and species function best as part of a large, interconnected network that is maintained and protected by involving people. Reconnecting Northland works to improve efficiencies, grow resilience, and increase impact by acknowledging that things work better if they are connected. - At Reconnecting Northland, we believe that the journey towards Te Ao Mārama - knowing and being one with the natural world, will illuminate the pathway for socio-ecological regeneration across the region. Today, the fragmented, damaged and degraded landscapes of Te Tai Tokerau (Northland) express the true extent of our separation from the natural world. A paradigm shift or systems change – call it what you like, but new ways of being with nature are urgently required if we are to turn away from the chaotic and destructive practices of the modern world. As a Connectivity Catalyst, we work to inspire the connections and weave the relationships required for Te Ao Mārama to emerge, supporting communities to regenerate their whenua - their lands; their wai - their waters; and local nature-based economies, creating abundant and resilient ecosystems for the benefit of all. Together we can activate socio-ecological regeneration within Te Tai Tokerau… Ko tae te wa e hoa mā - the time is now!
- Last month, two local climate-warrior rangatahi profiled Reconnecting Northland in a short documentary film. Speaking with Eamon Nathan our Pou Manatū (General Manager) and Thalea Tane our Relationships Manager, the filmmakers Robby and Grayson engaged in a range of topics, both practical and philosophical, exploring some of the different methods we employ for social and ecological regeneration across the region. Their film titled 'Reconnecting Northland' was entered into 2024 Climate Action Film Competition, a beautiful initiative for local youth led by Climate Action Te Tai Tokerau. We recently received the news that the film placed second in their division! Congrats to Robby and Grayson for your excellent work and thanks to Volunteering Northland for making the connection with these two outstanding young men. We also highly recommend looking through the other entries as the incredibly talented Northland youth have developed some beautiful and highly creative content

- At Reconnecting Northland we support many Taiao Collectives on their own journeys towards Te Ao Mārama (an enlightened world) for the benefit of their lands, waters and people. This was evidenced last month when the Waimamaku Collective invited us to Ōmāpere to share the various projects that they're undertaking for the ecological regeneration of their 13,400Ha catchment. During the day long hui we heard updates for their Taiao & Community Action plans, ongoing biophysical assessment and an innovative story-map tool for enhanced communication. Between these in-depth presentations, we also engaged in reflection sessions exploring the challenges the catchment faces and what remedial actions should be prioritised. Ngā mihi nui to all of the community members, agencies and professionals who contributed to this successful and inspiring hui.

- Our Te Kete Hononga trial, which piloted a ‘first of its kind’ service for connecting and supporting communities, business and agencies undertaking socio-ecological regeneration across Te Tai Tokerau (Northland, NZ), has come to an end! Now we are preparing Te Kete Hononga for its second phase, details of which we will share with you shortly. In the mean time, enjoy the highlights of our recent Whakanuia (celebration) held at the Hihiaua Cultural Centre, Whangārei. Once again, thanks to all of our collectives, partners and supporters who made the trial a success

- At Future Whenua Summit 24, our friend, an esteemed business journalist and environmental commentator Rod Oram shared what would be his final public presentation. Speaking for over 30 minutes, Rod provided a holistic overview of the many economic, social and environmental challenges we face, whilst maintaining his characteristic humour, empathy and optimism. Committed to navigating a just path to a better world, Rod deeply understood the need for paradigm shifts and systems change. Today we are releasing his inspired kōrero onto YouTube and we encourage you all to not just listen, but to also act on the wise ideas and thoughtful messages that this kind man has left with us. Rod, the world is a richer place for your insight and wisdom. We honour your legacy and accept your challenge to fight for this beautiful marble we call home. Rest in peace dear friend.https://lnkd.in/guZumzi3

- Earlier this year, Jodi Delaney visited us here in Aotearoa/New Zealand. During her stay, she had the opportunity to connect with our Board Chair, Liz Oliver, delving into our vision for Northland and the collaborative, community-led approach we're employing to realise it. It's great to see Jodi reflect on our unique approach and recognise its potential to serve as a model for sustainable regeneration. Thanks for visiting our part of the world Jodi! We're thrilled to hear you felt inspired by our work. #collaboration #regeneration #ecosystems

Another inspiring project I had the privilege to explore in New Zealand was Reconnecting Northland based in Whangarei. During a thought-provoking two-day tour with board chair Liz OliverI discovered their unique grassroots ecological regeneration efforts. With some of New Zealand’s most biodiverse habitats and a large indigenous population, this region has the potential to serve as a beacon for sustainable regeneration. Reconnecting Northland leverages existing goodwill, talent, and expertise to drive community-led projects across the region, catalyzing long-term, landscape-scale transformation. The vision is ambitious: within three generations, Northland aims to be a thriving tapestry of resilient ecosystems, where land, water, people, and enterprise flourish together. - Future Whenua Summit '24 From the 15th to 17th of March, a wide range of ecologically grounded local communities, leaders in rural regeneration and visitors from far and wide gathered at Ngawha for the Future Whenua Summit 24. Ngā mihi nui to all the attendees and speakers, as well as the volunteers and crew whose many hands made the summit work. We will begin uploading speaker videos shortly, but in the mean time, please enjoy these photos. Once again, our thoughts and love goes out to the friends, family and loved ones of Rod Oram who passed away on the 19th of March. Ahakoa whati te manga, e takoto ana anō te kōhiwi.

- Ko kapohia te manawa tītī, te manu tāiko, te reo pāoho mō te tāiao e te ringa kaha o Aituā! It is with great sadness that the team at Reconnecting Northland acknowledge the great life and work of Rod Oram, who passed away yesterday. A highly respected journalist and environmentalist, Rod was committed to navigating a better pathway for Aotearoa. He was a close friend of our Chairwoman Liz Oliver as well as a longtime and passionate supporter of our mahi in remote Northland. Rod spent much of the past weekend with us at the Future Whenua Summit, and the news of his passing has been incredibly tough for our team. As a guest speaker at Future Whenua Summit Rod presented a holistic overview of our current economic, environmental and social position, as well as taking part in a panel discussion. Sharing deep conversations with many over the course of the weekend, Rod’s intelligence, kindness and empathy made an impact on all. Leading up to the event we felt incredibly lucky to have Rod on board. Now we feel even luckier to have shared in the presence, philosophies and thoughts of such a beautiful, caring and generous man. Our thoughts go out to all of Rod’s loved ones, friends and family. E hotu nei te manawa, e tangi nei te ngākau mōna, me tōna whānau. Moe mai rā e te rangatira, e oki oki ai koe i te moenga roa, kia au te moe.
