Hello all, I have started a list for all past Armageddon Cosplay Contest winners. It is a big job as there have been changes and so many contestants to keep track of.

If you have any information please either reply here, at the forum if you are a member or at the armageddon.cosplay@gmail.com email address.

Any interesting stories would also be welcome. I'm not sure how many i can include in the project i am planning but I do hope to get a fair bit up on a website dedicated to the contest.

As an aside I will be setting up a facebook page and linking the geddoncosplay to it and a twitter account as well as the tumblr already up and running.

Auckland Time Travelors day

Just getting in early as I had a meeting today with the organiser.

And yes this is not just an event to wear your steampunk/historic costume/cosplay but there will be activities for making stuff!

I'll be doing two demos: fitting a Vicctorian bodice and drafting a skirt. Each one hour and they will be in the programme when it comes out.

They are centred around historical methods (c1880ish) but will be very adaptable for punking and adapting. And it means you will be able to have a unique base that no one will be able to play Guess the pattern with ;) A few links to my own website

I'll also have a display of my historic costumes as a timeline which I hope will give Ideas.

There will also be a parade of costumes for the attendees to watch or participate on. You will need to register at the gate. You can also register to enter to be judged (I'm one of the team of three).

There will also be kids activities, but I don't know how much ore I can say, so I will update as soon as there is a full programme.

So start using what this community has shared and get involved.

I shall try to be dressed to my persona Miss Verity Pride with bloomers and baldric. And maybe later a very pretty silk gown...

Armageddon Expo http://armageddonexpo.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1083

Just a heads up if anyone was thinking of entering the cosplay comp for Wellington and Christchurch (three and two weekends away respectively) :) The website has been a bit off and on so this link takes you to the forums where I pasted the text of all the rules and the registration forms.

Any questions ask here or the email mentioned over and over again in the rules ;)

Have been sorting prizes and with the new awards there is a better chance for public recognition of skills in making and performance :)

Christchurch cosplay registrations close tomorrow! Email them to me at armageddon.cosplay@gmail.com if you haven't already and you wish to enter.

There will be no new forms available at the event but there will be the opportunity to hand them in on Saturday. I will be doing a talk at 2pm so if you haven't handed them in at the information booth then that is an ideal time to do so.

Watchmen Partae!! Ok folks, since only about 2 or 3 peeps are interested in going to the Screening of Watchmen, I was thinking...

WATCHMEN PARTAE!!!!

Now, as I have to organise this...I am thinking about having it here in Hastings...but as there are hardly any cosplayers in Hastings...I am torn, so reply with where you would want to have it
Also, if we do have it in another town I will need a show of hands as to can help me with it...

Now, I know there are alot of little peeps here, as in under 18 little, but I am torn in the choice to make this Partae 18+, as everyone loves a Drunk Rorschach! (as shown in this video: HERE)

So, rules if this is going to happen:

I also have no idea when this could happen, as its school time for most, so Ideas are welcome...

So, what do you think of this...you know you love it...you know you want to come...

What Ya'll doing in March...? Anyone for a Meet-up for the Watchman Screening??

There has been varying release dates due to court actions etc...

But if ya'll are doing nothing on the date it says Watchman is released in NZ, which they say is the 5th, you wanna crank it down, in semi-full comic/graphic novel Glory?!

Howz about it...Short notice I know, but I thought it would be kewl, as alot of us are sitting on the edge of our seats for this movie :D:D

I, myself would love to go as Silk Spectre I...or a female version of The Comedian...have been designing a few variations of that one actually....and I know there will be a few wanting to be Rorshach :D:D

So...............what you think????

Auckland Medieval Picnic Hello all,

As a follow up to the Medieval demos at Auckland Armageddon we are having a friendly meet the locals event this weekend. It's a potluck picnic and very laid back where people can ask questions about what the group does while sitting back and relaxing in a pretty setting.

The group that was at Armageddon was the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) which has about 30, 000 members across the world and has been going for more than forty years. It's a group that is pretty much what you make of it. How much history you want to learn is up to you and there are many social activities as well as educational that we generate.

So the details for the picnic are:

When: Sunday 9th November, from 1pm on.

Where: Wintergarden in the Auckland Domain. There is plenty of parking available all over the domain and it's a pleasant time of the year to be out and about.

Who: The local group of the SCA in Auckland, "Ildhafn".
http://www.sca.org.nz (there are groups all over the country and for any Aussies who have stumbled across this page yes there are groups near you as well: http://www.sca.org.au- and any SCAdians reading, get yourselves to the next Armageddon! It's great fun!)

What: Picnic and catch up after Armageddon.

What to bring: yourselves and any questions you may wish to ask. Some of our group will be in costume some will be in regular gear. Members will also be bringing food with a pre-1600 theme. You are welcome to bring your own food and drink and costumes if you desire but this is an informal event so there is no pressure to do so.

There will be SCA members attending with interests in many areas of the Medieval and Renaissance arts: dancing, fighting, costuming, hand arts, wood and metal crafts, social history and preparing good food.

Armageddon Cosplay Two weeks until email registration for the Cosplay Contest closes. There is a last chance to hand in your forms at the desk on the Saturday but it makes it easier if I have time to read your forms a few times before the event!

Please go here to get all the information you need. If you need any clarifications please email sooner rather than later! Please note the early start time for the judging! This is new and meant to allow everyone a chance to relax before the presentation.

Good luck to all who enter, we had a record turnout for Wellington this year!

Steampunk Event... Now, if you are not over at the NZ Cosplay Boards - Here - then you should join up and join in :D

Right now, we are working on sorting a Steampunk Event in Auckland. Here is a page on Steampunk Fashion and Here is one on Steampunk in General if you do not know what it is :D

So far we have decided on the 21st of November 2009, as most (if not all) of the people attending so far have to make some items from scratch, and Armageddon is way too close to start on other things that are so close after it...

A suggestion was put forward to hang out Here for the day, taking Pictures and just having fun in general :D

So who is interested? You? You and a Friend? Your Friend? Your dog? Comment on what you think and if you would be interested :D

AuckGeddon Cosplayers Want to be involved in organising an event? Bill is wanting to set the schedule very soon. There are two rooms for anime this year: the anime screening room, exactly as it sounds and the animation events room. This is where the cosplay judging will be this year (judging will be in the morning this year to allow contestants time to rest and fix any costume/make up before the presentation on the main stage.

There will be a couple of hours available after the judging (should end about 1.30pm) and before the presentation of the awards (4pm on the main stage) due to the new schedule and this would be an opportunity to get together and put on those long skits that cannot be presented on the main stage. I will be wanting a rest and a chance to make sure the judging process is as fair as it can be so do not want to be in charge of anything besides the cosplay contest that day.

So if you want to make use of the opportunity to put on a longer skit please contact Bill via the Pulpexpo website. Also there may be other time in the room availble on other days so if you have a serious plan it might be worthwhile asking about that then as well.

Welly' and Ch'Armarmageddon cosplay discussion There is only one hour now for the cosplay discussion group so I was thinking that the second hour could be done as a sort of walking tour, or taking a break from the event and having an afternoon tea or just going to another space in the event to discuss further aspects of cosplay.

Is anyone keen for anything in particular?

Wellington Armageddon Just a reminder that Wellington e-Registrations close tonight for Wellington's Armageddon Cosplay contest. Please get them to me on time, I will email back immediately tonight (I have replied to everyone who has registered so far so if you haven't got notification please email again. I will also go through the spam folder and see if anything has wound up in there unexpectedly.

If you get a notification that the e-registrations have been closed then they are closed. You will need to hand them in at the Armageddon booth at the convention. If you can't come in in person see if you can get your forms to someone who is going to be there.

Remember the rules are to keep everyone safe including you, me, staff, guests and other attendees of the convention. I do wish the rules could be enforced on the public in general (no wearing umbrellas pointy side up across your backpack!) but it can't. However, this way, if any incident occurs we can all say "'t weren't us guv!"

The time limit will be enforced. We have not been able to source a light timer device but one of us will have a stop watch and do hand signals (or some other unobtrustive sign) at the "wrap it up" point" (50 seconds for solos and 1.50 mins for groups) there will be a grace period for those who have genuine issues (and to stop people stressing about the time limit and so forgetting lines etc.) but anyone who goes over that will be penalised.
The time limit will not impact on time to talk with the judges. This will in fact allow us to ask more questions. Please be prepared to do skits first so we can keep better track of time.

We are supposed to have a better space to work in this year which I am going to look at on Friday. The anime events and anime screenings are held in different rooms so please check the schedule carefully.
Saturday 2pm-4pm Cosplay panel, anime events room. Informal rough guide to sewing and armour techniques etc.
Sunday 1pm on Cosplay judging round, anime events room.
Sunday 4pm-5pm Cosplay contest presentation, main stage.

If you have any special needs such as to be judged earlier or later please include that in your forms.

Thanks to those already registered, it's going to be a great event and very hard to judge as usual!

Mod Hi hi everyone.

I'm sorry the place has been so dead lately, but it should be more lively around arma08. So just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how we can make things better?

Also I'm wondering if anyone has any cosplays planned in the near future?

New Zealand anime/manga artists, & cosplayers? Hi guys, am updating a few pages on my site and would be keen to add more to my link list as far as New Zealand anime/manga artists are concerned, as well as Cosplayer sites.

To see what I have so far, check out the Anime/Manga NZ Links List and just comment there (or here) if you have a site, or know of someone who should be there.
The site gets visited by a large variety of NZers looking for information on anime & manga in general, so it's a good way to get yourself out there.

(All my support and advisers for the contest, a great big thank you also!)

Hello,

I just wanted to take this opportunity to again congratulate all the
cosplayers and their helpers for all the effort and dedication that
went into their entries.

All your hard work was appreciated by myself and those who helped me
with the judging and the organising in each city and it really did
make it so hard to decide on who would get the prizes. To be bold, it
was like comparing Armani suits with Dior evening gowns with wearable
art entries! When you have so much skill displayed by different
competitors in very different styles it was extremely tough to decide.

For myself I see the competition as having two parts to it, and I felt
this way as a competitor as well. The main aim is to have a setting
where you can display your skills and fandom and to meet people like
minded. This is where I as judge get to just be in awe of everyone. So
many of you are developing skills in patterning, others are also
honing skills you already have and then there are those getting
creative with techniques new to you. As someone with diverse
interests in costuming I can very much appreciate all of that,
probably more than the contest can let me show.

The other part of course is the judging, and that part is very hard,
for all of us. But I have to remember as judge and you as the
competitor that it comes down only to what I get to see in those two
minutes. The rules are there to make sure everyone has an equal chance
in that time frame, a way to make sure noone feels penalised for
getting their entry in early/just in time or for having a costume the
judge doesn't recognise. This is why we ask for full views of the
costume you are recreating and your understanding of the character. I
can go do that research but it only helps me. It doesn't show me that
you made informed choices for the cut or fabric or decorations or
characterisations. And if that reference doesn't exsist it helps me to
know how well you understand the design of the source as a whole to be
able to create those elements.

I would also love to award people for their very good sportsmanship
and for grace under tremendous stress. However this is not something
that can be quantified or assessed fairly. I would though like to
thank you all for the positivity displayed it made that element of
judging stress free.

I'd also like to thank those who asked me in such an open manner about
what they could do to improve for next year. I felt, and still feel,
uncomfortable answering this because I do not want anyone to feel they
have to meet specific requirements. I do want everyone to be able to
reach their full potential but without pressure or any suggestion that
what you are doing isn't good enough because it is. The "problem" was
so many of you have reached a very similar level that the awards just
do not reflect. A very good problem to have, I feel, because it means
the future of Cosplay and costuming in general in this country is in
very safe hands. It just makes my job tougher! I also don't want
anyone to feel they need to suppress their own ideas or follow a path
that does not suit them. That discourages creativity and creativity is
what keeps costuming and cosplay alive.

I am hoping though to have some panels over the next year at
Armageddon, and also at different times and events, to give a sample
of the wide range of techniques that are out there. So far response
has been positive and it appears some general panels on patterning and
materials selection are desired so I will try and incorporate an
introduction and a list of further information from different sources.
If anyone has any other ideas please let me know through this email
address ( armageddon.cosplay@gmail.com ).

For those who are entering next year; good luck and I look forward to
seeing what you do next! For those who won't be joining us again; you
will be missed but thank you for your contributions this year. You
have all inspired me again in my own costuming pursuits and inspired
others to get out there to create and wear their own work as well,
bravissimi!

Regards,
Armageddon 2007 Cosplay Judge
