Sure, Pennsylvania went for Obama four years ago and polls are indicating it will be, again, but we have to make it happen. So get out there and cast your own vote on Tuesday and do what you can do get others out to vote for our candidate: knock on doors, make calls, give rides to polling places. Four more years!

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives plans to vote early next week on an expensive bill that will make it extremely difficult for many state residents to cast their ballots.

Pennsylvania Republicans are pushing for legislation that will require voters to show a government-approved photo ID in order to obtain their ballot.

According to a New York University study, there are an estimated 4 million people in Pennsylvania who do not have photo identification. Students, the working poor, the elderly, racial minorities, and people with disabilities are twice as likely to not have the approved forms of ID this legislation will require. This bill will create serious obstacles for these voters, many of whom are likely to vote Democratic.

This is another Republican strategy to stall progress and suppress democratic freedoms. If this voter ID bill succeeds, it will keep scores of Democratic voters away from the polls in 2012.

Specter to switch parties
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
By James O'Toole, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Sen. Arlen Specter will seek a sixth term as a Democrat.

After months of denying speculation that he would run in 2010 as an independent or a Democrat, the veteran Republican announced in a statement on his campaign Web site today that he would seek re-election next year as a Democrat, the party he left decades ago when the Philadelphia GOP recruited him as its candidate for district attorney. Obama, Biden Plan to Take the Train

The Obama and Biden families will ride the train to Washington, D.C., for Inauguration Day, taking an abbreviated version of the old whistle-stop train tour.

In a nod to previous inaugural journeys and the country’s early history, President-elect Barack Obama and his family will hold an event in Philadelphia on Saturday, Jan. 17, before boarding the train. The train will stop to pick up Vice President-elect Joe Biden and his family in nearby Wilmington, Del., and stop for another event in Baltimore, before arriving in Washington Saturday evening.

The trip will have special significance for Biden, who as a senator from Delaware made that commute daily on the Amtrak train for the past 36 years.

The practical benefit of the pre-inaugural events may be a lessened crunch on the District of Columbia from regional visitors. With an estimated 2 million to 4 million people expected at the official Inauguration, city officials are already expecting visitors to overwhelm the local roads and transit systems. Every American satisfied with a pre-inaugural event in Baltimore is an American not sitting in traffic around metropolitan Washington.

First, let me mention that I want to start a new community about politics, including elections and political/social issues, in Pennsylvania. I'll post here about it, soon as it's born.

In the meantime, there's an article in today's Los Angeles Times about Democratic plans to capture Arlen Specter's US Senate seat in 2010. Here's an excerpt from it:

Democrats may play hardball in Pennsylvania
MSNBC's Chris Matthews could be in the mix of candidates hoping to win Republican Sen. Arlen Specter's seat in 2010.
By Josh Drobnyk
November 26, 2008
Reporting from Washington -- The Northeast's dwindling cast of Senate Republicans has Democrats circling Arlen Specter's seat in Pennsylvania, convinced the party is well-positioned to make a competitive race out of the 2010 election.

Leading the pack of prospects -- at least in celebrity -- is Chris Matthews, the MSNBC "Hardball" host and a former Capitol Hill Democratic staffer. The Philadelphia native has been toying with a run for months, and this week he sat down with state Democrats to discuss the prospect of taking on the five-term GOP senator.

Others considered in the mix include Rep. Joe Sestak, who is sitting on $3 million in campaign funds; state Rep. Josh Shapiro; and U.S. Rep. Allyson Y. Schwartz, a two-term Philadelphia area lawmaker who has moved up quickly on the Hill and has a Rolodex full of prospective donors from her unsuccessful 2000 Senate run. "We'll see," she said about a repeat bid.

Thanks so much for joining me in the obama_pa community over the past few months. It's been good.

I might start a community about Pennsylvania politics, in general. Not just yet, but soon. Ideally, it wouldn't concentrate exclusively on elections. What crosses my mind is that it would encompass not only politics, but also progressive social causes. I'll post ideas about it and see what you think, and feel free to offer your own.
