Research paper thumbnail of Chedoke-McMaster attitudes towards children with handicaps scale for traditional sporting games (CATCH-TSG): initial validation in 7 different languages in adult and young populations

Frontiers in Psychology

IntroductionMeasuring attitudes towards disability is meant to assess which interventions are mos... more IntroductionMeasuring attitudes towards disability is meant to assess which interventions are most likely to create changes in population attitudes. Physical activities, such as Traditional Sports Games, are an excellent methodology to fight against the stigma of disabled people. Thus, the main aim of this study was to validate the Chedoke-McMaster Attitudes towards Children with Handicaps Scale (CATCH) adapted to a physical activity environment.MethodsAdditionally, we implemented this process in a combined way, 7 languages and 2 versions (adult and youth) at the same time.ResultsThe results showed that the CATCH-TSG scale provides the scientific community with a valid and reliable tool for professionals who want to assess the change in attitudes towards people with disabilities after receiving a psychoeducational intervention that includes physical activity (TSG).DiscussionResearchers will compare respective results from different countries and ages using different versions of the ...

This study examines the structural traits (internal logic) of games and the subjective traits (external logic, individual and group) of players, oriented towards the task or the ego, that provoke states of SWB (related to affiliation, autonomy, mastery and meaning) in participants in individual competitive psychomotor games. Two hundred and eighteen first-year undergraduates pursuing a physical education and sports science degree took part in the study. The students received two sessions consisting of five individual games each per session. The participants completed questionnaires after each game, giving accounts of their emotional experiences. The content analysis performed by six experts related SWB to the structural aspects of each game: a fun game, a pleasant or unpleasant competition, and the way victory was achieved (score - close/crushing; frequency - fi...

This proposal is contextualized in the theoretical underpinnings of the education of motor behaviors and in the use of mixed methodologies. The three phases of content analysis are explained applied to comments from different groups of participants in Spain, Portugal, Switzerland and Brazil (university students and primary and secondary school students) gotten from the validated Games and Emotion Scale (GES) questionnaire and reflective interviews. This avenue of research has enabled conceptual maps interpreting the emotional experience of the different kinds of games to be developed and educational proposals for professionals in modern physical education to be presented.

As a result of this exchange, interpersonal conflicts may emerge because of each person’s semiotic interpretation of the sociomotor dynamics of the game. This research aimed to analyze the comments of intense negative emotions that arise in conflicts of a praxical nature (motor conflict) in a TSG, in its different parts (generating agent, conflict response), and in the motor interventions of its protagonists (conflict management). A total of 160 university students (M age = 20.49, SD = 2.28) participated in a competitive sociomotor traditional sporting game of cooperation-opposition: the Marro. At the end of the practice, all answered the validated GES-II questionnaire. Subsequently, a content analysis of 480 comments was performed using ATLAS.ti 8.4 software. The current study examined age and gender patterns in seven measures of meaning: sense of purpose, optimism, religious or spiritual involvement, family care, morals and ethical standards, self-oriented, and relationship-oriented meaning making. As far as we are aware, this study is one of the largest studies ever conducted on this topic, allowing us to explore curvilinear age patterns and interactions between age and gender. The sample comprised 2565 participants (63.9% females), including adolescents and adults, who were recruited from rural communities of 3 Southern U.S. states. The objective of this study was to compare the behavior of the basic emotions in different games, according to the Bisquerra model (MBI) and the internationally agreed biopsychological model (MBPS), through the validated Emotions and Games Scale (GES). We studied 502 university students, who after participating in games of different categories answered the questionnaires GES, PANAS and POMS. The MBPS had a better fit in absolute adjustment indexes, confirmatory factor analysis, parsimony indexes, construct validity and convergent tests. The findings suggest using the GES with the two factors and five basic emotions identified by the MBPS: positive emotion (joy), negative emotion (anger, fear, sadness and rejection).
