Blu-ray 3D (2010 - ) | Museum of Obsolete Media (original) (raw)
Blu-ray 3D discs were announced in 2009 by the Blu-ray Disc Association, and the first release was the feature film ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ in 2010.
To watch Blu-ray 3D, a Blu-ray 3D capable player is required, along with a 3D capable television set and 3D glasses.
Standard Blu-ray Disc players cannot usually read 3D discs since they are triple-layer, and so a standard Blu-ray Disc is often packaged with the 3D disc.
In addition to dedicated Blu-ray Disc players capable of playing the 3D discs, computer drives are also available, and the Sony PlayStation range has been able to play them since 2010.
Sales of Blu-ray 3D discs have been a small proportion of overall sales of Blu-ray Discs, and the range of titles has never been very large, peaking in 2013 with 77 releases. In 2018 there were just 26 releases. Recently, television manufacturers have reduced the range of 3D televisions, or like Samsung in 2016, left the 3D television market altogether. With competition as well from the higher-definition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, the future for Blu-ray 3D is uncertain.
