Datasonix Pereos (1994 – 2002) | Museum of Obsolete Media (original) (raw)
The Pereos was a tape backup system for personal computers that was introduced by Datasonix in 1994.
The tapes were re-branded Sony NT cassettes manufactured by Sony, and hence were tiny as was the tape drive itself which was designed to be portable and could be powered by batteries. Despite its small size, the tape claimed to be able to store 1.25 GB which was a significant amount at the time, and more than the capacity of many hard drives.
The drive is connected via the parallel port and this, along with the data verification system, meant that backing up data was very slow.
The drive was supported in MS-DOS, Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.
Datasonix ceased trading in 1996, but the Pereos drive continued to be sold and supported by J & J Peripherals until around 2002. Only around 12,000 Pereos drives were sold in the lifetime of the system.
