This study aimed to assess the effect of salicylic and citric acid applications on the vase life,... more This study aimed to assess the effect of salicylic and citric acid applications on the vase life, relative fresh weight, water uptake, bud opening change and total water uptake of cut narcissus. In the research, flowers were harvested at the unbloom goose-neck stage. As applications, purified water (T1control), 300 ppm (T2) and 150 ppm (T3) salicylic acid, 150 ppm (T4) and 50 ppm (T5) citric acid were determined. In the research, vase life, bud opening change, water uptake and total water uptake were found to be higher in T5 application compared to other applications. It was observed that T2 application was more effective in increasing the relative fresh weight as 112%. The highest doses of growth regulators caused damage at the bottom of flower stems. As a result, it was found that treatments applied in low doses as 150 ppm salicylic acid and 50 ppm citric acid on the investigated parameters of Narcissus tazetta flower were more effective.

The highest mass, width and length of fruit were obtained when harvested in CTIFL 2, whereas the lowest values were recorded in CTIFL 6. With the increase in color intensity, the softening in fruit occurred. The firmness of CTIFL 6 was about half of the CTIFL 2. With the darkening of the color, SSC significantly increased in fruit. The highest SSC value was determined in CTIFL 6, but the lowest SSC was recorded in CTIFL 2. The fruit of CTIFL 3, had significantly higher vitamin C than the other fruit. The lowest vitamin C was measured in CTIFL 2. The fruit of CTIFL 4-6 had higher total phenolics and total flavonoids content than other color levels. In both DPPH and FRAP assays, the highest antioxidant activity was measured in CTIFL 6, whereas the lowest was determined in CTIFL 2. The effect on color levels of phenolic compounds was significant. ...

The effects of combined aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) tre... more The effects of combined aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) treatments on quality attributes of ‘0900 Ziraat’ sweet cherry fruit during the cold storage and shelf life were investigated in this study. Significantly lower weight loss and decay ratios were observed in all treatments throughout the cold storage period as compared to the control. A similar case was also observed referring to the shelf life. MAP treatments were found to be more effective in retarding the weight loss and decay ratio. Higher hue angle values were measured from AVG-treated fruit at harvest. Similarly, hue angle of AVG and MAP-treated fruit were also higher than for the control in all periods of cold storage and on the 7th and 21st day of shelf life. AVG-treated fruit had higher firmness values than the control at harvest. However, higher firmness values were measured from MAP-treated fruit during the cold storage and shelf life. At the end of cold storage, lower SSC and hig...

Fruit were kept at 0 ± 0.5 °C and 90 ± 5% RH for 60 d. At the end of storage, as compared with the control, the weight loss, respiration rate and flesh firmness were lower in MAP-treated fruit. The SSC and vitamin C were lower in MAP-treated fruit than the control. The losses of total phenols, total flavonoid and antioxidant activity were significantly delayed by MAP during the storage. At the end of storage, the losses of oxalic acid, ascorbic acid and citric acid were delayed significantly only with the MeJA + MAP as compared with the control; and the losses of malic acid and fumaric acid were also delayed with both MAP and MeJA + MAP. The content of gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, quercetin and chlorogenic acid was higher in MeJA + MAP than the control. As a result, MeJA and MAP treatments could be used as an effective tool for delaying quality loss and maintaining of bioactive compounds in medlar fruit during cold storage.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of rain protective covering (RPC) together ... more This study was carried out to investigate the effects of rain protective covering (RPC) together with Parka and gibberellic acid (GA3) treatments on cracking rates and quality attributes of jujube fruits. RPC was mounted 5 weeks before the commercial harvest date. 1% Parka (containing 7.5% stearic acid, 5% cellulose and 1% calcium) and GA3 (15 mg L−1) were sprayed to experimental trees 3 and 2 weeks before the commercial harvest date. As compared to the control, all treatments (Parka, GA3 and GA3+Parka) yielded lower cracking rates. Cracking rates were also significantly lower in covered trees than in uncovered trees. However, GA3+Parka treated fruit had significantly lower cracking rates than both the control and the other treatments. GA3 treated fruits had significantly higher weight, width, hue angle and firmness values, but significantly lower L* values than the control fruits. As compared to the control, all treatments yielded a significantly lower respiration rate and soluble solids content, but higher titratable acidity, vitamin C and total phenolics. The covered fruits had significantly higher hue angle, respiration rate, vitamin C, total phenolics, total flavonoids and antioxidant activity (free radical scavenging activity on DPPH and FRAP) than the uncovered ones. It was concluded based on the present findings that rain-protective covering could be used as an efficient tool to reduce cracking rates in jujube fruits without any negative effects on the other quality attributes. It was also concluded that Parka and GA3 treatments reduced cracking rates significantly and such a reduction was more remarkable with combined GA3+Parka treatments.
