The goal of the present paper is to examine how chariots, and in particular royal chariots, are d... more The goal of the present paper is to examine how chariots, and in particular royal chariots, are depicted in war scenes on wall reliefs both in New Kingdom Egypt, mostly representative examples from 19th (1549-1298 BC) and 20th Dynasty (1298-1069 BC), and in the Neo-Assyrian Empire (934-609 BC). Chronologically, the present discussion encompasses both the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1550-1070 BC) and Iron Age (ca. 1100-600 BC). Geographically speaking, the study focuses on Egypt and Northern Mesopotamia.

Within this period, the nineteenth Dynasty (ca. 1292–1189 BC), Egypt flourished, producing no less famous a ruler than Ramesses II (r. 1279–1213 BC), known for his battles against kingdoms of the ancient Near East and particularly for the Battle of Kadesh. His direct predecessor and father, Seti I (r.1290–1279 BC), was no less warlike and capable.

The central authority embodied by the king was strong. Successful military campaigns extended Egypt’s borders. Fortresses were built in Lower Nubia on the banks of the River Nile to keep newly conquered territory under control; they also served as storehouses for goods traded in that region and as checkpoints for travellers. The arts flourished. The most famous works of ancient Egyptian literature were created in this period and represent the classical phase of Egyptian language. But the Middle Kingdom would eventually give way to the Second Intermediate Period (1650–1549 BC), during which Egypt
was ruled by a group of people of foreign stock: the Hyksos."
