It has always been a part of archaeological and historical interpretation, although it has not yet been thoroughly examined as a subject in its own right. Therefore, for a better understanding of the phenomenon of migration in the past, it is crucial to study it in the wider context of historical studies. Since the 19th century, these studies were strongly influenced by two theoretical schools of thought, namely Diffusionism and Evolutionism, which have sought to explain cultural development and social change. This paper examines the progress of migration research since the 19th century and its application to ancient Egypt over time.

This is a workshop, to be held on the 6th of April 2018 at the 11th ICAANE in Munich. First results of an ERC Advanced Grant "The Enigma of the Hyksos" at the Austrian Academy and the Bournemouth University/UK are presented by an international team of scholars supported by external researchers. The research programme deals with the origin the reasons of immigration, the homogenity or heterogenity of a Western Asiatic communit, living during the late Middle Kingdom and the Second intermediate Period in the eastern Nile Delta. They were responsible for the rule of the Hyksos, a foreign dynasty, which took power in Egypt after the Middle Kingdom around1740 BC. The reearch also concentrates on the rise of power, on the way of rule, on the definition of the material culture of these foreigners, on their cultual interference with the Egyptian culture and on the reasons of their decline and failure to build a stable kingdom. Another subject is the impact of the Hyksos on the Egyptian Culture of the New Kingdom. The research is approached with methods of humanities and of biological sciences.

The main aim of the conference was to stimulate research and exchange ideas as well as to build bridges for a variety of sub-disciplines within Egyptology. The first impression given by the ancient Egyptian culture is that of continuity and long-lasting stability. In fact, we can observe very different kinds of transformation processes alongside enduring tradition. These changes are visible in all areas of society: politics, art, language, economy, religion, etc. This volume gives an insight into current research on this topic and the results of various discussions following the 5th International Congress of Young Egyptologists. In the study of ancient cultures and civilizations, the questions about what remains and what is changing are always of great importance. A primary goal is to get a deeper understanding of the life and thinking of our ancestors. Cultural changes are dynamic processes and can be caused by developments in technology, political and religious ideas or substantial experiences with diverse societies or environmental factors. Because of this sheer panoply of possible causes, one seeks to understand transformation in ancient Egypt by asking a series of essential questions: what is the nature of a particular change, when and where did it come about, through what agency, for what purpose, which parts of Egyptian society did it affect, and how lasting were its consequences. In order to be able to answer these questions, as many cultural aspects as possible must be included and considered in detail.
