International Day of Sign Languages 2024 (original) (raw)
In collaboration with the New York State Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing Office, housed in the New York State Office of the Chief Disability Officer, the New York State Office of Language Access proudly celebrates International Day of Sign Languages.
On September 23 each year, we recognize and celebrate the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of the Deaf community and other sign language users.
Sign languages are essential to our linguistic diversity, with over 300 variations used worldwide, including American Sign Language, British Sign Language, French Sign Language, and Chinese Sign Language.
As a New Yorker, you have the right to an interpreter, no matter your preferred language, when seeking services or benefits from state agencies covered under the language access law.
To learn more about your language access rights in New York State, download the Your Language Access Rights in New York State brochure, available in 26 languages.
